Is this going to seriously impact Google Ads?
« on: October 11, 2021, 12:28:31 PM »
Just quietly, even Google is admitting that Chrome needs deleting and not using because it's been so compromised by hackers and insecurities. And it either can't be fixed, or Google isn't interested in trying. They're not being too loud about it, because a reduction in users of Chrome of course impacts on the effectiveness of Google Ads.

But it's a serious issue and causing massive defections across to Edge and Firefox which promise efficient ad blocking by default. Even though you might use Google within those browsers, there's still a large audience that is almost incidentally going to not see Google Ads anymore.

Suddenly, the likes of Facebook and Instagram campaigns might be better value?

There was a security flaw repaired in September. Updates to Chrome occurred this past week.  Is there data to back the assertion of Google not backing Chrome?

No, just recent website articles that suggest Google feels the problem is too hard to fix. I actually agree with your (polite) scepticism... it seems ridiculous that the flaws can't just be fixed. The real impact isn't so much Google's response, but the wealth of criticism coming from media that's saying, "Too often, too much and now too late," (about the security flaws) and that it's time to dump Chrome.

OPINION ONLY: My take is they are working on upgrades to Chrome as surreptitious Beta testing for the "next big thing." If history is predictive, they are going to release something to solidify their application ecosystem.  When released, the "new thing" will port your Chrome current settings.

Also, if you are prone to opening many tabs, and if you have not used Chrome's new Tab Group feature, I recommend you try.  The tab groups are easy to use and simplify the desk top.

Regardless of how this shakes out, I think it's a good reminder to use as many messaging platforms as possible. Everyone is squeezing everyone, just look at the HBO/Amazon fiasco. And history tells us that we're always the first to get lost in the shuffle.

Agreed, diversify your footprint with a broad ecosystem of options. HA! Classic corporate speak!

Lost in the shuffle is too true. If micro economic theories are correct, collectively, "small fry" approach or exceed the annualized spend of the "big guys". Assuming you include everyone advertising, not just us collectors of words.

However, annualized spend means nothing to this quarter's review reporting. Give good news to the investors every three months, or perish.
