Firefox just deleted Bookreport - Whats the direct link?
« on: May 04, 2019, 05:43:19 PM »
I've the latest version of Firefox, and it just deleted almost all my extensions, including Bookreport. Something about compatibility, which seems like total crap to me, since they brought that in with version 57, and all my extensions have been working fine up to 66.

I've sent an email to Liam, but dont expect a reply immediately.

Does anyone have the direct link to Bookreport?

Mozilla broke the browser.  They're aware of the problem and trying to fix it, but in the meantime... yeah.  Catastrophe.

I'm posting this via Brave.   :icon_rolleyes:

My firefox is broken too, and I came here only because I don't have my regular protections in place (noscript/adblock), AND I know this place is safe to visit.

Anyway, it's a glitch with ALL addons, and they're working on a fix apparently.

Shame of it is, they're probably driving many thousands of holdouts into the welcoming arms of Chrome.

Won't happen with me, as I cant stand the way Chrome looks.

But I have been known to go back a few versions of Firefox, and disable updates until they finally fix whatever I didn't like. If they dont fix this rapidly, I'll be doing the same.

Really bad timing for Bookreport, as I need figures from 2 months ago, right now.

Quick temporary fix detailed here:

https://discourse.mozilla.org/t/certificate-issue-causing-add-ons-to-be-disabled-or-fail-to-install/39047/14

Just go to Preferences -> Privacy & Security -> and allow Firefox to install and run studies. You can disable it later.

Works for me anyway. My adblocks etc are back on. :)

Apparently Firefox doesn't offer older versions any more (saw this on Slashdot, don't know how right that is?)

If you're on Windows, try my free Salesscanner for now. Might help.

Try: hello@getbookreport.com

Good luck with getting it back.

Firefox disabled all my extensions also. Irritated the hell out of me. I've used Firefox for years and years. Anyway, my solution was to install the browser Opera--which I've used periodically as a backup browser through the years. It also has a number of extensions (addons) that you can add to the browser. I'm not sure about bookreport, though.

In a way, it's almost reassuring that a big technical construct can be brought down because somebody forgot to push a button. We might be able to overcome the robot overlords because somebody forgot to pay the electric bill. It also gives credence to any story plots that depend on somebody not paying attention.

I'm using an ancient version of Firefox and it just gave me a notice that some of the following add-ons have been disabled, and then presents me with an empty list.  :icon_think:

There's a glitch in the matrix and we lose our sh*t?

I think it's the fact that a company or organization can effectively remotely disable a piece of software without asking.  I thought avoiding such a situation was one of the reasons for using open source software in the first place.

If you're happy editing config files (take a copy first), I can confirm this works:

> Shut down Firefox
> Open extensions.json
> Replace all instances of “appDisabled”: false to “appDisabled”: true
> Replace all instances of “signedState”: -1 to “signedState”: 2
> Save and start browser
> Disable and re-enable all extensions in about:addons

No change for me.

I cant even find a file called extensions.json. What folder is it supposed to be in?

If this isn't fixed soon, I'm going back to v56 and disabling updates. That's the most recent installer I have.

Everything's working again.

https://techcrunch.com/2019/05/03/a-glitch-is-breaking-all-firefox-extensions/

Not for me. All my extensions are still disabled.

Same here, actually.  I posted that from a different computer, and the addons were working.  Then the glitch update happened--that computer was just late to the party, I guess--and my addons disappeared.  So I'm still waiting for both computers to update again so I can get the addons back.  Should have happened by now according to that article.   :HB

Still using Brave for the time being.  I'd rather use Firefox, but I'm not doing it until I get my addons back.

ETA: I think I've successfully imported all my bookmarks, logins, and passwords into Pale Moon, so I'm using it for now.  I also downloaded Waterfox earlier and gave it a whirl, but most of the addons didn't work the way they were supposed to, so the jury's still out on Waterfox.

Reddit thread about the glitch.

I found this comment sadly amusing:

Quote
I accidently opened PornHub. Didn't realize Ublock is gone for now.

My Windows got 2 JavaScript malwares, 1 fake update alert, 5 tracking urls, 6 sidebar ads asking for ' fun at my accurate location ', 2 popups randomly opened in new tabs, 1 new firefox window opens with malware url, another javascript popup asking for premium membership, another dialogbox asking for location access from the site itself.

I feel like crying. Went on Youtube mobile and they've 20% of topbar asking to download recommended apps. Ads.. Ads everywhere in every fuxing video. Every video I start there's a loud ass ad for 10secs, cant skip without timer enabling the button.

WTF IS WRONG WITH 2019 WEBSITES!! WHO THE f*ck DOESN'T USE UBLOCK!!?

Type %appdata% into windows search, then open Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

There will be a random folder name, and the file you want is in there. If there are multiple random folders, use the newest by date.

I got the fix.  I had to enable "studies" to make it happen, but as soon as I did that, all the addons came back.

How to do it: Go to Options, then go to Privacy and Pecurity, then scroll down to Firefox Data Collection and Use.  You'll see a check box next to "Allow Firefox to install and run studies."  Check that box.

My firefox still hasn't updated, so I'm using the 'edit the config file' fix above for now.

About 2 hours ago the settings reverted all by themselves, so I had to edit them all over again.

I still don't see BookReport or AdBlockPlus. I tried to update Firefox and got an error message. I tried to download AdBlockPlus and got a message from Mozilla that AdBlockPlus is corrupt. Don't think so.

I don't really need Firefox today. I can use Chrome. I installed AdBlockPlus on it and went to a favorite site: no ads.

Anyway, I've got plenty of typewriter-type things to do with my computer. Like maybe even continue writing my latest novel.

Firefox finally came back together for me late last night. I worked offline all day and got lots done. I don't need no stinkin' internet.

I know, right? Poor websites who beg me to unblock them, or disable so they can make some change with ads. I just click myself right back out. And Google thinks I live about 75 miles from where I actually do.
