I believe that Pro Writing Aid and Grammarly (premium) both have this function.

At the moment I have Pro Writing aid - there's an "overused" and "repeats" tab you can select. As with pretty much every tool, it seems to flag up false positives, but might be worth a look?

Some word processors allow Regex searches. I think word and libre/openoffice. If so, search for this:

\b(\w+)\s+\1\b

(Googled it because I couldn't remember the code)

I happened to run a spellcheck this morning in MS Word as I had done a 'replace' I thought had gone wrong, and it surprised me by picking up on a duplicated word as well.

I like this: WordClouds

Cheers,

UPDATE

If the question is: Which words are overused, use a word cloud. There are several free options.  I like the one above because it is wasy to use and has no word limit. I have pasted an 80k word manuscript and it told me which words were over used.

If the question is: Where did I use the wrong word, I use several options. Grammarly. MS Word Editor. When all else fails, highlight the word, <shift>F7 and compare the word I wrote to the list of synonyms.

...

FYI - I have Grammarly Premium.

I search the MS Word add-on and used the Googles - I can't find a repetitive word count in Grammarly.

How? Do you use an add-on?

No. It's an option somewhere. You turn it on and it grammar checks everything, and puts a red wavy line under duplicated words. (Might be blue.)

Most of the grammar it recommends is total crap, but it gets the duplicated words just fine.

If the OP has in mind a checker that points out how often the most often words are used rather than just words used in repetition by mistake, I'd like to hear solutions, too.  I use MSWord "find" to count words and phrases I suspect I use too often, then I edit down.  But I'd prefer a global checker to discover words I don't suspect.  WordClouds looks good but not quite as specific as I'd like.

That needs clarification, because I assumed the latter.

This is is a problem.<<--- That's what I thought we were talking about.

If its how many times you use the word 'then' in the whole book, I used to search for it, and Word would tell you how many. Then check each one for if it was needed or not.

yWriter shows you a list of all the words in your document with a usage count beside each one. Last time I mentioned this I think someone said Scrivener does the same?

I'm careful with the checkers.
I might tag a character with speech patterns.
Whenever she says "exactly" the reader knows immediately who is talking.
