Since so many self-publish now, a lot of agents are now becoming publishers by selecting the best writers from their slush pile. However, self-publishing takes out the middle cut, but then authors must also learn a new task: Marketing.

"Best" is a debatable term. "Easiest to sell" is more probable.

Early in my writing life, I got paid for some things I wrote. They weren't very good; in fact, they might even have been dreadful. Much later in my writing life, a new young editor wanted to buy one of my mss. but got overruled by her editorial board. They were right and she was wrong; that book was nowhere near ready and probably I would not have known how to fix its problems. Additionally, it was quirky, but not in a way that would easily appeal to millions of readers. They would have tried to remove its quirkiness and bland it out. I came to my senses and self-published it.
