The Speculative Fiction Showcase thread
« on: September 23, 2018, 09:56:46 AM »
Some of you who know me from the other board may remember that I co-run a promo blog called the Speculative Fiction Showcase together with Jessica Rydill, who hasn't yet made it over here, as far as I know (if you're here, Jessica, say hi).

So what is the Speculative Fiction Showcase? The Speculative Fiction Showcase is a blog for all things science fiction, fantasy and horror. We feature new science fiction, fantasy and horror releases (and all their subgenres) by indie and small press writers, we have interviews with speculative fiction writers, we host guest posts, we have a popular weekly link round-up and a monthly new release round-up.

Interested? Our submission info is here.

Meanwhile, here is a look at our posts from last week.

The last post was the weekly link round-up which is posted every Friday. Topics this week were  Iron Fist, The Predator, Captain Marvel, the relationship of Ernie and Bert, a Goodreads scandal, the disintegration of KBoards and much more.

The new releases we featured last week are The Mourner's Cradle, a horror novel by Tommy B. Smith, Collision Course, a new novelette in my In Love and War space opera romance series (yes, I feature my own books on occasion) and The Imaginary Worlds of B.R. Kingsolver, an urban fantasy boxset by B.R. Kingsolver.

You're welcome and thanks for the kind words, Bill.  :cheers The late lamented SF Signal's round-ups were one of the inspirations for the link round-ups at the Speculative Fiction Showcase and Indie Crime Scene BTW.

It's Christmas Eve (well, here in Germany, at any rate), so today we have a round-up of holiday-themed science fiction, fantasy and horror books at the Speculative Fiction Showcase. So if you're still looking for a seasonal read, we have you covered.

You're welcome, Lori.  :cheers

Today's featured new release is The Standarounds of Twilight Gardens, the latest in my Hallowind Cove cozy fantasy series. This story lampoons a very common horror film or rather horror film trailer trope (honestly, this shot is in every second horror film trailer), namely the shadowy figures standing around in the mist outside someone's house.

Thank you Cora! I love the keywords you used. I’ve never heard of cozy space opera or hopepunk. Cozy space opera is exactly the term I was looking for when I was trying to categorize my book.

Glad you liked the post and the tags, Willow. The hopepunk term was coined by Alexandra Rowland, who wrote an excellent essay about it. Cozy space opera is a term I came up with, when I put a recipe in the back of a space opera novel and jokingly said, "Other people write cozy mysteries, I write cozy space opera" and then thought, "Hey, actually cozy space opera sounds pretty good."

It seemed to me that both fit your book well, so I used them.  :cheers
