Surrounding Myself With Story Telling, Writing, and Publishing
« on: January 18, 2021, 10:42:25 PM »
There are so many distractions in life. I find I am most productive when I can control my focus. One way I do this is to immerse myself into the world of storytelling. Reading books, fiction and non-fiction, and listening to podcasts. I use YouTube to listen to my podcasts, but some times Spotify. Here is a list of the podcasts I listen to the most on YouTube:

These are podcasts about the publishing industry
Sterling and Stone: https://www.youtube.com/user/SterlingandStone/videos
Mark Dawson - Self Publishing Formula: https://www.youtube.com/c/SelfPublishingFormula/videos
Kindlepreneur: https://www.youtube.com/c/Kindlepreneur/videos

These discuss both publishing and writing
Six Figure Author Podcast: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCkgP6WIFsg3vWga2XVs619w/videos
Chris Fox: https://www.youtube.com/c/ChrisFoxWrites/videos
The Creative Penn: https://www.youtube.com/user/thecreativepenn/videos

These are about story telling
Diane Callahan - The Quotidian Writer: https://www.youtube.com/c/QuotidianWriter/videos
Just Write: https://www.youtube.com/c/JustWrite/videos - from a screenwriter's point of view

These are from a writer's point of view about story telling
Lindsay Buroker: https://www.youtube.com/c/LindsayBurokerWrites/videos
Jerry B Jenkins: https://www.youtube.com/user/NovelistJerryJenkins/videos
Brandon Sanderson: https://www.youtube.com/c/BrandSanderson/videos

These are deep dives into the craft of writing
Ellen Brock: https://www.youtube.com/c/EllenBrock/videos - Ellen is an editor, and I highly recommend her videos to improve your craft
Jessica Brody - Save The Cat: https://www.youtube.com/user/jessicabrody1/videos
K.M. Weiland: https://www.youtube.com/c/KMWeilandAuthor/videos - Her book on Writing Character Arcs has helped me immeasurably

If you have any additional suggestions, I would appreciate hearing about them.

When it comes to story and narrative, I prefer film analysis channels. Here are a few more channels worth checking out:

Now You See It - film analysis
The Closer Look - film analysis
Terrible Writing Advice - writing / funny-ish
Lessons from the Screenplay - film analysis
Lindsay Ellis - pop culture, film, books and stuff
Nerdwriter1 - about lots of stuff, mostly film and art
Overly Sarcastic Productions / Trope Talks - general story stuff
Every Frame a Painting - old, primarily about film editing, but really good

I still have so much to learn, but here are some I like to read.

On publishing:

JaneFriedman.com. Has some ebook info, although a little more tilted towards traditional publishing.

On writing craft:

You mentioned K M Weiland's blog which I really like.

I've also started reading writerunboxed.com after reading a couple of Donald Maass' writing books over the summer. This is also tilted towards traditional publishing. It has an interesting series critiquing the first hundred words of current bestsellers.

(By the way, I read all kinds of stuff that I don't agree with so I'm not endorsing anything. Just saying I read them and sometimes learn things. )

If you write thrillers and mysteries, or just like James Scott Bell, killzoneblog.com is a goldmine in my opinion.

Good thread. I'm more partial to books than podcasts and videos and second Don Maass' books on craft. He's a good teacher. I also like those by James Scott Bell, Sol Stein, and many others, esp. writer biographies. One book, Word Work by Bruce Holland Rogers is more about sustaining the writing life and I return to it from time to time.
