Speaking of Man of Steel, Zack Snyder is one of those directors that I really want to like, especially after Watchmen (loved it). But he keeps swinging and missing.

I feel the same, though the jabs at Joss Whedon during this whole Snyder Cut affair tarnish it some for me.

But he's got a great eye. Watchmen missed the mark a little for me because he seemed to overlook the far from subtle subtext of the source, but Dawn of the Dead and 300 both kind of blew me away. Even Sucker Punch had some unforgettable imagery, but boy did it expose his weaknesses as a storyteller that have dogged everything he's made since.

I remember thinking during the Snyder-Whedon kerfuffle "Dude, you've got chops, but your dressing down Whedon is like Shia LaBeouf dressing down Denzel Washington."

You're right about Snyder ignoring some important themes in Watchmen. I was just so happy to finally see it on the big screen (longtime Alan Moore fan) that I was ready to applaud anything that got it half-right.

I forgot Snyder did Dawn of the Dead. That WAS a good flick (thanks to you and PJ Post for the reminder).

Funny that you mention Sucker Punch. I've debated watching it several times. Part of me wants to just to give Snyder another chance. But I keep hearing bad things about the film. Your comment certainly doesn't get me excited about watching it. lol

Sucker Punch is misunderstood by lots of folks, many of whom tend to be quite vocal about it. It's like Inception, multiple levels and the literary toolbox is blown wide open - Chekhov's everything. You really have to pay attention. The narrative is there, but it's not a typical Hollywood story - it's complicated and kind of messy. It's more social commentary than anything else.

Don't get me wrong, people can understand it just fine and still hate it, that's the nature of the beast, but you can usually tell when someone doesn't as soon as they start talking.

It's definitely worth the watch. I liked it. While we're on the subject, I liked Watchmen too.

Last night we watched "Broken Flowers" with Bill Murray. It was free, had good ratings, we like Bill Murray and we recently watched "Rock the Casbah" which we laughed a lot at. This movie, wow, just so bad. They didn't solve the mystery at the end which was the only reason we hung in there. One scene was just Bill sitting in his living room. As opposed to several other scenes of him sitting there watching TV. Scenes of him driving, sitting on a plane. They actually hired an actress (I recognized her from the end of the movie "Hitch" to sit next to him, pretending to sleep, for one scene on the plane.) A couple of times when he was sitting on the plane he dreamed about things that already happened. Lots of him driving alone and playing the CD of Ethiopian music his friend had given him. My husband got really sick of the music but he didn't mind the full frontal and full back-al nudity that contributed absolutely nothing to the plot other than "Hey boobs!"

A terrific little gem. It's tragicomedy released on a micro-budget ($200K). It's uncomfortable, but mesmerizing.

Currently on Amazon Prime.

Oh I love Julie Andrews. I should see if our library has that. We watched Hawaii (well I did) after I read her autobiography. Tried to get Cynthia (Liz Taylor) recently, but my library system doesn't have it.

RE: Thunder Road

Agreed. I watched it recently too and really enjoyed it. Jim Cummings followup is Wolf of Snow Hollow which I've heard is very different in tone, but equally good. I've got it on my Netflix DVD list for when it releases next month and you can rent it now. I expect eventually it'll make Prime, but I'm not waiting. :)

Re-watched Alien in memory of the late Yaphet Kotto.

As usual, I rolled my eyes at the "molecular acid" line.   :icon_rolleyes:

In spite of its few flaws, it's still an awesome movie.

The Mrs. and I have been streaming the Marvel Series in the correct order. (Story chronological, not movie release date.)

As someone who dabbles in screenwriting, how they connected so many threads while producing the movies out of order, is fun to watch.

Also, never, skip the trailers.

Some trailers are works of art in and of themselves.  Back in the day, I only needed to see one summer commercial for the upcoming Firefly series.  I never a commercial for it again.  But that one viewing hooked me, and I made a mental note to look for the show when the fall lineup started.  As a result, I was one of the few who saw the whole show as each episode aired.

Others are terrible.  I'll never forgive the people who made the trailer for The Matrix.  I saw the commercial on tv, and my impression was that the movie was just a special effects show with lots of action and Keanu-isms but little or no plot.  The result was that I missed seeing in the theater what would later turn out to be one of my favorite movies.

I'm guessing you're in the minority there. I thought it was a spectacular trailer. All the plot is in there (upon review after seeing it) but it's cut together in such a way that it's disguised by the "what is the matrix?"/"You can't be told; you have to see it for yourself." theme. It's such a strong mystery hook, it's JJ Abrams porn.

Back on topic the last three have all been very good...

Death of Dick Long -- not as weird/indie as expected. It's rather restrained actually. A solid character unraveling plot.

My Octopus Teacher -- super engaging nature doc about a guy who visits an octopus in the wild every day for a year.

The Guilty -- A 911 operator gets a very unusual call. You spend the entire movie with the operator. The tension and reveals they wring out of this single character/set setup are staggering. This actor should have gotten awards attention.

And catching up a bit, but since it was mentioned in a prior post...

Wolf of Snow Hollow -- See Thunder Road first to see if Jim Cummings is your bag or not. If you're in, you'll like this too. It's a bit of a tweener though. It doesn't really work as well as Thunder Road for the family drama and the drama puts a drag on the horror side plot/pacing. It's a balancing act that's interesting, but maybe not all that effective.

Doesn't work for me at all, though.  My response to "What is the Matrix?" would be "Why should I care?"  The trailer failed to make me care.   :shrug

Recently binged Broadchurch - Classic British crime serial, well worth the time.

Just started season three of The Fall - Hardcore British crime psychological drama.  Gillian Anderson (X-Files) surprised me with her understated acting. Caution, there are long passages without dialog but it all seems to flow.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum with Zero Mostel. Screwball comedy set in ancient Rome.

Binging Endeavoor (prequel to Morse). A few episodes ago they showed a high rise collapsing. Very emotional because it wasn't that long ago that a condo collapsed in Surfside, Florida. Not to mention I saw it as 911 was approaching, so it was a double whammy for me.

Also binging Foyle's War set during World War II in Hastings UK. The war is the background but the main plot is a murder mystery.

These shows are classically British with well designed plots and all of that literary stuff, but, for me, they fail spectacularly at pacing. And I'm not talking about car chases and such, it's usually the transitions that stall the narrative - like anti-cliffhangers. So the final catharsis is a bit...anticlimactic as well - which, also seems to be a British thing.

With that said...I've watched lots of BBC shows, including the ones you mentioned. Seconded.

I'm going to go with the pacing, because Downton Abbey, even though it's still mind-numbingly slow by Hollywood standards, works pretty well generally speaking; good enough, in fact, for repeated viewings. So, it can be done...ish. Also, Torchwood - so there's that.

This isn't a movie, but I'm putting it here anyway...

Dave Chappelle: Sticks & Stones

If you're unfamiliar with this comedy show from Chappelle, it came under fire from critics. Many felt his jokes were insensitive. Chappelle was essentially "cancelled" by critics.

But many viewers loved the show...

I thought it was terrific. Some folks will undoubtedly be offended by the content. But if enjoy good stand-up regardless of who ends up as the butt of the jokes (and don't mind profanity), you'll probably enjoy Dave Chappelle: Sticks & Stones.

It's just over an hour long and can be viewed on Netflix.

Verdict: 9 out of 10.

Chapelle is great, but stays right in that lane of comedy intended to make the audiences uncomfortable. The reaction is no surprise.

I watched "The Mole Agent" a documentary where a private detective hires an 80 year old employee for the purpose of going undercover in a nursing home to investigate allegations of abuse. Without spoiling anything, it's not that dark. The message is ultimately really sweet and the protagonist is awesome.

Bride and Prejudice

I love Bollywood. As you can probably tell from the title, it's a take off on Pride and Prejudice. Pretty good adaptation. And of course, the music and the dancing and the colorful costumes were wonderful.

I'm not going to spoil it, but the interesting thing about the reaction this time is he had a joke that was more of a point IMO, and the reaction to the special further demonstrated that very point. I'm not sure whether or not he knew beforehand and crafted it intentionally that way, but I think he might have.

Comedy is messy, and lands differently for different people, but I've never felt his comedy was mean-spirited.

I'm looking forward to watching The Closer.

Yeah, he walked away from a $50,000,000 contract at comedy central and disappeared for a while, then came back with a huge Netflix deal. He's one of those stick-to-your-guns-and-it'll-pay-off stories.

I watched Once Upon A Time In The West last night.  It's free on YouTube.

I'd never seen it before.

My thoughts:

The first third of the movie was fantastic.  Truly epic.  Then it started dragging.  Then the sequence near the end became confusing, and I wasn't sure what had happened or what was happening.  Then the final showdown occurred, and it was a bit anticlimactic.  I suppose I was hoping for something like the showdown in The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.

In summary, I'm glad I saw it, but I'm sort of "meh" about it.

Indiscreet - Ingrid Bergman and Cary Grant. It's one of my favorites.

I had to laugh because this movie was made in 1958 and they talk about having read an article that the world's climate is changing.

I like Westerns and caught up with this one a couple years back. My reaction was similar. That first sequence deserves the hype but the rest is fairly inert. I had a similar reaction to The Wild Bunch--I arrived far to late to the party for it to have the impact it had at the time. I still have a few of the classics to catch up with but I'm afraid none of them are going to stand the test of time too well.

I like the idea of westerns - they're kind of mixed up with Star Wars and adventure SF in my head. I remember watching the War Wagon as a kid and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. And then Westworld came along...

What are the better westerns out there - ones that might hold up?

Oh, man, where to start, and how to organize...!

OK. After a few minutes of thought I'll give you something from each era that either did hold up for me viewing a decade or more late, or absolutely felt like a classic in the moment. And I'll stop around ten years ago which I consider current.

B&W Era:
I'm still working on the classics of this era so I don't have much to recommend:
Treasure of the Sierra Madre - Bogart is a lot more relatably human than most of his more iconic tough-guy roles and it was the first time I really got what made him such a big deal in his time.

Classic Western:
Rio Bravo - The template, but one of the better versions of it.
The Searchers - The treatment of native Americans is cringe level of the time but this film frequently captures the grand scale of the landscape in a way that became the standard for the next 50 years.

60/70s Revolution:
Filmmakers really start to experiment with the form.
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly - Best of the spaghetti westerns that usher in this era.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - A western non-western fans can love.
High-Plains Drifter - First of several Eastwood twists on the revenge story and antiheroes.
True Grit - John Wayne doing something different.

80/90s Next Generation
Westerns have lost their box-office luster by this point, but filmmakers who loved them in their youth occasionally are allowed to play in this sandbox again.
Unforgiven - Eastwood's sharpest deconstruction of the genre.
The Quick and the Dead - Sam Raimi silliness/fun. The Hunger Games of shootouts.
Tombstone - More modern filmmaking applied to a traditional western script with a great cast.
Desperado - A latin-themed take on the Western drenched in Robert Rodreguez's signature style.

Contemporary
You don't have to accept much "of the time" stuff with these films made to modern sensibilities.
3:10 To Yuma - Another traditional western script but made to the day's standards.
No Country For Old Men - I tried to avoid westerns filmed in a contemporary setting, but this one is too good not to mention. If that's too much of a cheat or you've seen it, the Coen's remake of True Grit can replace it.

Red River - my all time favorite Western
Rio Bravo - my favorite scene, and probably everyone else's, Stumpy throwing the dynamite for The Duke to shoot
Shane - probably one of the first hero/antihero Westerns. Not sure if I'm describing it correctly.
High Noon - haven't watched it in a while, but well worth a fifth or sixth look
The Unforgiven - Burt Lancaster, 1960
The Man Who Shot Liberty Vallance - Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne
Shenandoah - Jimmy Stewart, a real tearjerker, at least for me
The Cheyenne Social Club - Jimmy Stewart, Henry Fonda, a walk on the lighter side
Cat Ballou - Jane Fonda, Lee Marvin. Marvin won the Oscar, but he felt the horse should have won
Friendly Persuasion - Quakers fight in the Civil War

I'm sure I've missed some, but that's enough to be going on with.

And it was terrible. So bad it's not even funny. Cannot recommend it less.

No Time To Die (James Bond)

Middling among the Daniel Craig era Bond films. Aside from one sequence in Cuba with an extended cameo from Ana De Armas it's Quantum Of Solace territory.

That’s a bummer. Casino Royale and Skyfall were so good, the sequence was one good one bad and repeat so i thought they might go out on a high note.

Eh...
Funny how I bailed on so many franchises I once faithfully followed....

Star Wars after I saw A New Hope remake The Force Awakens with Mary Sue Ray
Star Trek (reboot) after I saw The Wrath of Khan remake Into Darkness. Cumberbatch ain't no Montalban
James Bond after I saw the Daniel Craig version of Spectre. Blofeld was never so bland.
I gave up on The Hobbit after #2... How can you make 3 movies out of Tolkien's shortest book? Of course, invented characters like Tauriel didn't help

I probably won't watch Daniel Villeneuve's Dune. The danger signals are there for anyone to see. I first read Dune in the late 70s and have a deep attachment to Frank Herbert's vision.

Meh. I'm a cranky old man and can't stand anything that comes out of Hollywierd anymore, especially Disney properties.

You're not alone.  I enjoyed the Bad Lip Reading version far more than the actual movie.  I have the DVD or Blu-Ray for The Last Jedi which I've had for I don't know how many years now and I still haven't felt the desire to watch it.

My feeling is that they had the opportunity to pretty much use the whole original cast and have one last outing for them and still pass the torch to new characters and they blew it.  They also had the chance to use whatever George Lucas had planned and they threw that in the dumpster too.  And then they knew they were going to do a trilogy but didn't actually plot out a trilogy.  Before the sequel movies, I figured they were going to be huge because, you know, how do you screw up Star Wars?  Well, now we know.

I wanted to give up on The Hobbit but fortunately I persisted. The third movie was like the Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Hobbit was just a bid to make money out of three movies what it clearly should have been one.

Lonesome Dove was good, but like many things that come out of Hollywood, the book was miles better.
