Book Talk [Public] / "Rules for reading" - from a reviewer

Here's the reader I want:

10 rules for reading from someone who does it for a living
Washington Post   May 18, 2024

“…I read from morning till bedtime, with breaks for my job, family, meetings with friends, exercise, household chores and periodic review of my life’s greatest blunders. On the days I don’t read, I write….it’s a simple system. Many people complain that they have no time for books, yet somehow they manage to spend three or more hours a day watching television or scrolling through social media…You pays your money and you takes your choice….

“I don’t skim or speed read, though I envy people…who can zip through a novel in 20 minutes….As an exceptionally slow reader, I mentally murmur every word on the page, which allows me to savor the author’s style and to remember what he or she has said….

“After finishing a book, I tend to keep it. While not a frequent rereader, I do like to refresh my acquaintance with old favorites, if only by opening one up occasionally to enjoy a page or a passage. When I look at my living room’s bookcases, while sleepily sipping coffee in the morning, I see not only my past laid out before me but also my future…”

That is one terrible trailer.

The premise could be interesting. I'm just worried from the Wikipedia summary that the story being centered around the mayor's daughter might be dull. I'm assuming she'll probably meet up with and become allies with Cesar to go on time-stopping hijinks with, but she by no means sounds like the main character.

I'm not terribly impressed by the trailer.   :Hqn66ku:

Seems like the tagline should be: "Darth Emo discovers the Force."

The teaser trailer for this movie is out.  Check it out:

I'm not terribly impressed by the trailer.   :Hqn66ku:

I'm also not very optimistic about this movie.  Coppola made some some of the greatest movies ever back in the 1970s, but he arguably hasn't made a truly great movie since Apocalypse Now.

What do y'all think?  Does the movie look interesting to you?  Do you plan to see it?  Do you think Coppola, at the age of 85, still has what it takes?

The movie comes out May 17th.

Reservation Dogs - Surprisingly good. 99% Tomatometer - 91% Avg. Audience Score

Following the exploits of four Indigenous teenagers in rural Oklahoma who steal, rob and save in order to get to the exotic, mysterious and faraway land of California. To succeed, they will have to save enough money, outmaneuver the methheads at the junkyard on the edge of town and survive a turf war against a much tougher rival gang. This first-of-its-kind creative team tells a story that resonates with them and their lived experiences -- and invites audiences into a surprisingly familiar and funny world.

We watch an episode of Northern Exposure on Amazon Prime every night (unless the Dodger game runs late). When it first ran, the show was groundbreaking by touching subjects that usually weren't on network TV, and it always ended with a good feeling.
These days, it is a refreshing change from the current programming, and it provides these 79- and 78-year-olds with a look back to an earlier, simpler time.

So, done with Bitten, dropped GoT for a bit. Now I'm watching The Expanse, on season two.

Things would be better if watching streaming or recorded stuff didn't put me to sleep. :D

Yes, "Siffie" really knew how to screw up a show. I actually can't remember the last time I watched anything on SyFy. I have it recording Resident Alien, but truth be told, I kind of disliked the show.

Currently I'm watching Game of Thrones and rewatching Bitten, about the werewolves. I'm kind of dreading the whole Red Wedding thing on GoT, and may stop after that. Or before. :D

I have trouble focusing on TV these days. Aftereffects of the Covid mess. I can't really read anymore, I get distracted and frustrated. I'm beginning to wonder if any of my brain is coming back, and the awful typing I manage is driving me crazy. I have to retype almost every word.

I wish they'd added him earlier (love Carter, but she just didn't work right on Atlantis) and I wish we'd had another season or two of him in that role.

 :tup3b

Carter never seemed right for that role.  Daniel Jackson would have been a better fit.  It just felt like they threw Carter in there to appease SG-1 fans upset that they cancelled SG-1.  (And, really, that whole thing was a mess caused mostly by Syfy.)

Yes, it would have been nice to see Picardo as Woosley in that role for more than just the one season.

SG-1 and SG:Atlantis were really good shows that could have kept on going indefinitely if not for the machinations of Syfy.
