What TV series are you watching right now?
« on: September 21, 2018, 03:32:17 AM »
Do you like the series? Hate it? Grudgingly respect it?

I'll start...

It's ambitious with a lot of great scenes. But the storytelling is a mess.

It's what you'd expect from the Wachowski siblings.

Sense8 is on Netflix.

The original Upstairs Downstairs. I love those old BBC costume dramas. After this one, I'll be watching Lillie (Lillie Langtry).

I'm still waiting for Season 2 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

We finished watching The Crossing a few days ago. Lots of similarities to Lost, but still a very enjoyable show.

Just found out this morning that it was canceled and there will be no Season 2.

The last TV show I watched was Taskmaster on the Dave channel (UK). I believe there's going to be/there is a US version.

The last couple of series I watched, on Netflix, were Toast of London and Whitchapel.

I've been rewatching Buffy for what must be the 500th time! On season 7 now. I've been watching Ozark too, really liking it. Love Jason Bateman in it, Arrested Development was probably one of my favourite comedies  :icon_mrgreen:

I've watched Midsomer Murders through a couple of times, but I thought this last season was a little unbelievable. Not bad to sustain a show for 20 seasons.

We're on season 12 I think, maybe 13. Netflix keeps track for us. We watch 2-3 episodes a week. It is definitely evolving as it goes along.

It's a great show, even after most of the major cast left. The new people are just as good except for the sidekick this last season.

Jack Ryan. It was aiiight. I haven't watched "regular" TV in maybe 3 years and I've never been more sane or gotten more work done.

Same here - now on episode 7 of Jack Ryan...  I initially thought the actor was the one in Chuck LOL.  Wrong guy.

Upstart Crow (and a new series here featuring someone walking the routes of former railway lines - I'm afraid it's almost as quintessentially British as the one where a group of madmen built a model railway line through the Great Glen).

Gotta add a new one. I totally poo-poo'ed 911 last year because I was tired of so many police and fireman shows. But, they put the whole first season up for binging on demand, and I was bored last night. Now, I can't stop...c-a-n-'-t...stop.

Atypical...2 seasons (Netflix). Really, really good writing.
Jack Reacher...first season (Amazon). Very cinematic, great directing.
The Good Place...2 seasons (Netflix). Light and funny, but smart; a little left of center on the goofy scale.
Star Trek: Discovery...first season (CBS). Also very cinematic, solid SF.

and

Cowboy BeBop...the only seasons (Hulu).

You're gonna carry that weight...

So good.

Dark Matter, a.k.a. Why I'm Never Watching Syfy Again.

Seriously.  I stopped watching Syfy after they cancelled Warehouse 13 and Stargate: Universe in favor of wrestling stuff and I'd don't remember anymore which was the last straw but Syfy was dead to me for several years until Dark Matter.  Then I got hooked.  And then they cancelled it.

I will not be fooled again, Syfy!  I'm also not watching your parent network, NBC.

Thank goodness for Comet, except the new time they are moving Stargate: SG-1 to means I won't get to watch it anymore.

Watching Mayans and hoping to love it like I did SOA. Also watching the newest season of American Horror Story. I haven't loved every season but I've watched them all since the start. It's part of my Halloween season traditions now. Thinking about trying Maniac on Netflix. Seeing so many mixed reviews. I'm curious.

I think I've given up on more shows lately than I can ever remember. Must have something to do with the extreme level of choice currently available.

Currently enjoying and waiting for new seasons of: Bosch (Amazon), Mindhunter (Netflix), Big Little Lies (HBO), Black Mirror (Netflix)

Recently tried, and gave up on:

The Good Cop (Netflix)
Jack Ryan (Netflix)
Atypical (Netflix)
The Man in the High Castle (Amazon)
River (Netflix)
Luther (Netflix)
Breaking Bad (Netflix)
Westworld Season 2 (HBO)
Jessica Jones Season 2 (Netflix)
Hinterland (Netflix)
Broadchurch (Netflix)
Dark (Netflix)
Wallander (Netflix)
Gray's Anatomy (Netflix)

The first season of 'The Handmaid's Tale' was okay, don't think I'll be looking to see S2, however. Liked the first season of 'Stranger Things', but really disliked Season 2, don't know if I'll bother with S3.

The last couple of seasons of 'House of Cards' have been 'meh', but I'm interested in seeing what they do sans Spacey.

Haven't been enjoying 'Game of Thrones' since S4, but I'm caught up and waiting for S8 because at this point I'm pot-committed. Gave up on 'The Walking Dead' shortly after Negan came on the scene.

Might give another chance to: Altered Carbon (Netflix), The Americans (iTunes)(made it to S3 and liked it, but got too expensive to keep streaming - it's a hard show to keep up with in Canada outside of an over-priced cable package which is frustrating).

Don't know if there's plans to make any more, but I also quite enjoyed a Netflix series called 'Godless'. Haven't caught up with 'Sharp Objects' yet, but might give that a go. Really enjoyed streaming all of 'The Good Wife' as well. I wish they'd bring back 'Justified'.

Man...I watch a lot of TV.

See, this is why reviews can be all over the pace. I thought season one was a master class in film making and writing - extremely entertaining and thought provoking, right down to the camera lenses used. And while season two could never measure up against the source material, it was still pretty good.

I liked Stranger Things 2 quite a bit as well. But then, I kind of like the nostalgia thing, even wrote a few books set in the 80s.

But I agree about giving up on shows. TV has definitely taken a turn for the excessively derivative, and just poorly written lately. How many shows over the last ten years have featured a group of people "returning" from the dead/lost/missing? The latest is Manifest. Westworld was cool, but it was knee-deep in the Nolan, non-linear subversion trope and really seemed to lose its way as a result. I think it would have been better if they just picked a story and followed a traditional linear narrative.

I just started The Walking Dead, Season 8 on Netflix.

Man, this show can be frustrating.

I gave up on that in season 2.  I think.  It may have been season 1.   :icon_think:

and bingeing on Grimm

Great show.  I watched each episode as it originally aired.  Fun stuff.

Interrupted Supernatural at Season 10,

to watch Space 1999, for the first time in 30 odd years. Eye opener for what they knew nothing about!

But will be interrupting Space 1999,

for Expanse 2 tonight.
Genres: Space Opera/Fantasy/Cyberpunk, with elements of LitRPG and GameLit, with a touch of the Supernatural. Also Spiritual and Games.

I'm not a fan of series going on for too long. I like resolution :)  I loved Stranger Things 1, and liked Stranger Things 2, but it's hard to see how they can do another  satisfying story unless they have a completely different monster or main character.

I loved how each season in The Wire had a different focus.

We'll have to agree to disagree. Loved Hinterland. Even if just for the scenery! Wow, Wales is just amazing and the fact that they double film each scene in English and Welsh just amazes me. I love the accent, too. The language is so complex.

On the lighter side, Death in Paradise can be fun. Again, gorgeous scenery, Caribbean this time. It's always a locked-room style murder, with fish-out-of water Brit detective. Kind of repetitive and predictable, but sometimes that's what I'm in the mood for.

The ones that stick in my mind right now: Elementary, Lucifer and Instinct.

I like Elementary and like how all the main characters are portrayed by the actors. Except for how Jonny Lee Miller portrays Sherlock. To me, he seems to overact/exaggerate mannerisms. Lucy Liu is awesome.

If you have an opportunity to finish the series, I recommend it.

You won't be disappointed. ;)

I've been waiting to continue watching. I only have over the air channels and usually watch when I house sit for family.

Just finished watching that for the first time a month or so back. Definitely ended on 5 as far as I'm concerned. After that it went down the plughole.

I'm one of those snobs who tends to sniff haughtily and say that I don't watch TV, but I am re-watching the Jack Taylor series which I love. It's Irish mystery series based on the novels by Ken Bruen. Set in Galway, it stars Iain Glen as a former officer with the Garda (the police) who becomes a private detective after being kicked out of the Garda for socking a prominent politician.

Recently tried, and gave up on:

River (Netflix)
Luther (Netflix)
Breaking Bad (Netflix)
Broadchurch (Netflix)

All four are really worth persisting with. Breaking Bad is incredible, Luther got better, and Broadchurch (UK version) seasons 1 and 2 were great.

I'm currently re-watching Deadwood. Loved that show.

Also rewatching various Star Trek series because freelance research.

I recently watched Battlestar Galactica for the second time.

In my opinion, it's one of the best sci-fi series out there.

(It's currently on Hulu.)

Lucy Liu is awesome, although I was quite disturbed when I binge-watched quite a lot of the episodes to realise just how often they show her sleeping - the show is obsessed with showing her waking up. And often with some weird note from Jonny Lee Miller.  House mate from hell.

I had to give up on Elementary because they all end in the interrogation room with someone recounting the entire crime, step by step, and the motive behind it all, while the suspect just sits and listens. Too much exposition for my taste. Which is too bad, because I liked the characters.

I'm still planning on watching 'Deadwood'. I'll get around to it at some point.

Seems as though everyone around me has raved about 'Breaking Bad'. Made it part way through the second season and just found it a bit dull.

Admittedly, only made it through 4 episodes of 'Luther' before I gave up on it.

But, I'd made it mid-way through season 2 of 'Broadchurch' (UK) before I had to stop, I just really was not enjoying it. I think I went into it expecting something along the lines of 'The Fall' and was disappointed as it came across as a bit too melodramatic - definitely more so than 'The Fall', or 'Bosch', and definitely more so than 'Mindhunter'.

I guess this means I appreciate the procedural aspects more than I do the family or human drama elements. Then again, I really connected with the characters, family trials and tribulations and inter-personal dynamics from the early seasons of 'Game of Thrones', so...I don't know.  :icon_think:

I'm just about through Series 1 of Designated Survivor

It's not bad, plenty of cliffhangers. Acting is reasonable. Kiefer Sutherland isn't any different to Jack Bauer, except he has died hair and (has he had a facelift?). The female FBI agent stays immaculate despite being thrown around a lot. She also wears heeled shoes and clip clops around in a highly unstable way - not really impressive. Still, plots are good and keep me entertained. Looking at the stats, it goes down hill in Season 2 so I'm probably going to end it at that.

This summer I binge-watched all 6 seasons of Longmire.
Hell On Wheels was a pretty good series, and I really enjoyed Deadwood.

I thought The Americans was outstanding. At first the premise seemed implausible, I was prepared for a lot of disjointed plot shifts and silly dialog, but was pleasantly suprised.  The storyline became increasingly complex and suspenseful with each season.

I also like documentaries about conspiracy theories, shows about AI and singularity, and Bit Coin, blockchain, and data mining. I also listen to George Noory for the UFO stuff.

Basically, I have such ecclectic tastes that I'll watch whatever I'm in the mood for at the time.  Sometimes it's YouTube vids of Ray Kurzweil, Michio Kaku, variosTedTalks topics, etc.

Tonight I'm a little brain-dead so I don't want something with a complex plot. I think "Man with the X-Ray Eyes is on Prime...

Kiefer Sutherland is such a terrible actor, that only he could play the undersecretary to HUD. He's actually not bad in Designated Survivor.

There were a few episodes I fell asleep watching.

But I did watch it.  I think it got better in the later seasons.

I think what bothered me most about it is that it really wasn't Battlestar Galactica at all.  It's like they just used the name to get eyeballs but it was largely a completely different show.  I would have felt better if they had just done it as their own thing from the start.

I was disappointed they cancelled Caprica so soon though.

For the love of all things holy, not SyFy!!!  Ugh.  They'll either reboot it like they did Flash Gordon, cancel it after a season ends on a cliffhanger or cancel it in favor of a less expensive spin-off, probably centered on Twiki but all dark and brooding.

They wrapped up the conspiracy storyline (in what felt like an extremely rushed manner) and basically turned it into another run-of-the-mill political drama.  Yawn.

Just finished Parks and Recreation for the second time. I love that series.

I am now watching Homeland season 6 and looking for something to watch with my wife. A thriller, murder mystery, mystery, something. We may check Idris Elba's series... What was it, "Dark?"

Tonight I'm a little brain-dead

I've been a little brain-dead since the kboards ToS eruption.  I'm not even sure I'm in the same universe I was in back in August.   :dizzy

I'm with you on that.

I think that the final season of House of Cards dropped today, so I'm going to start watching that. I look forward to Princess Buttercup taking over.

Netflix is telling me that season 6 will be available on Nov. 2nd.
Damn them! It was supposed to be out last year, but then the revelations happened...

Gotta admit, you gave my heart a kickstart (cue Motley Crue!) when you said the new season dropped today.

As much as I haven't liked the direction HoC had been moving in the past couple of seasons, I'm curious as anything to see what they do post-Spacey. I'm guessing he dies off-screen in a freak panther attack.  :catrun

Watched 1 and a, bit episodes of Rillington Place, on Netflix, starring Tim Roth and Samantha Morton.

Watched the first episode, realised it was almost time for bed, so wheeked to the final scenes of the last episode (it's based on a true story so I kind of knew how it ended anyway).

I finished season 5 of Homeland last night.

Very good season. A little uneven in the front half. But they poured in the octane in the back half and ended with a great finale.

Can't wait to watch season 6.

Just binged Black Sails, final season.  Interesting series.  Savage and brutal at times, but - oh my - some of the dialogue is just outstanding.  Courtesy of Captain Flint:

"All this will be for nothing. We will have been for nothing. Defined by their histories, distorted to fit into their narrative, until all that is left of us are the monsters in the stories they tell their children."

This one is my favourite:

"This is how they survive. You must know this. You're too smart not to know this. They paint the world full of shadows... and then tell their children to stay close to the light. Their light. Their reasons, their judgments. Because in the darkness, there be dragons. But it isn't true. We can prove that it isn't true. In the dark, there is discovery, there is possibility, there is freedom in the dark once someone has illuminated it. And who has been so close to doing it as we are right now?"

Excellent British crime drama based on the books of Alan Hunter. There are 45 of them if I remember correctly and I think I've read them all.

The series is set in the 1960's. Grittier than Midsomer Murders and not much home life to soften the hard life of a copper.

There are few current series I follow, though I used to watch Sherlock and Downton Abbey. These are the recentmost series for me, nothing much else interested me the past years.

Instead I love watching older series like Magnum PI, Stingray, Voyager and Enterprise. I even own the full DVD set of Streets of San Francisco!

I'm currently watching the new Twin Peaks, can't seem to tear myself away from that one.

I watched a bunch of episodes of Heathers. It should have been great, the promos looked good and the movie is an old favourite but I kept falling asleep. The two main characters are pretty unlikeable imo.

I wish people would stop trying to reboot all my favourite 80's movies. They're ruining any nostalgia I have for my childhood.  :icon_sad:

I loved Mad Men. Great characters. And I liked that the episodes weren't sensational. They didn't rely on plot twists to grab attention. Just good storytelling that focused on Draper and the people around him.

I saw that years ago, and really liked it. I was just telling my wife this weekend (after watching the film Pride and Prejudice - also excellent) that we need to go through the series again.

Busy watching The Night Manager

So far, enjoying it. I find the characters compelling.

I also enjoyed Broadchurch, all three seasons. Season 3 was possibly a little less successful, there were a couple of plot threads that you went, afterwards - "what happened with that guy?" but overall excellent.  I loved the interactions by the two main characters,  the low-key, dry, self-deprecating humour.

At the end of the last episode,
Spoiler: ShowHide
why don't the Egyptian gangsters go for Jonathan Pine (the night manager) as well as for Roper? From their point of view, he's part of Roper's group and owes them money, or set them up/ betrayed them, right? Pine wasn't outside the hotel when Roper was snatched, but later he's walking around outside, not attempting to stay out of view, and looking completely unworried that he might be a target?

Just finished The Haunting of Hill House.

Liked it well enough until that horrific (as in awful, not scary) ending.

Read a story about how the director/showrunner had a different plan for the ending but changed his mind. He should have stuck to the original ending. It would have had a lot more impact.

Binged...

Nothing like the original show. Sabrina is an unexpectedly dark supernatural adventure that embraces the satanic elements of witchcraft. It's pretty good, but the tone is somewhat uneven, like it can't decide what it wants to be. It's from the same people that did The CW's Riverdale (same world even, Riverdale gets a few mentions in the show), which, unsurprisingly, suffered from the same problem. It veers wildly between a Disney channel show and True Blood.  As a side note, the lead (Kiernan Shipka) looks way too much like Hermione, (I mean Emma Watson) - both of them the greatest witches of their generation, by the way. The whole show is like this, it's either incredibly derivative or constantly winking at us. My other 'complaint' is that the show doesn't always let the drama breathe, wrapping up scenes so quickly that they end up leaving plenty of suspense on the cutting room floor.

Nevertheless, a solid 6 or 7 out of 10.

Finished all 7 seasons of the West Wing, bailed on Designated Survivor and the current season of Call Me Saul after about 3 eps each.

Now watching a UK police show where - for the millionth overused time - a trusted career police officer is blamed for the death of his wife because he showed up at the wrong time and picked up the weapon/got her blood on him when he cried over her body/etc.

Cue several eps of everyone who's ever known him immediately assuming he's guilty, with no regard for forensics, the guy's spotless record, or anything else a sane viewer would query in the first 30 seconds. Cop goes on the run, because why not, and everyone he's ever known turns out to be an evil turncoat working for Mr Big.

Argh.  Honestly, I think I've watched four or five different cop shows lately with exactly the same premise.

 :tup3b

I've just started watching this, so far I''m digging it. I know what you mean about it switching from disney to true blood, but I actually kind of like that they've done it that way. I also agree that they wrapped up some scenes too quickly.

Spoiler: ShowHide
The first scene that comes to mind is where the coven follow her back to the house after the black baptism, and the High Priest immediately backs off when Ambrose lies about having put down a protection spell. Am I supposed to believe that the High Priest, the representative of the dark lord, who considers that night to be of the highest importance, just accepts it and leaves? That scene could have been far better, and a show of the kind of magic we could expect to see. Bit disappointed by that.

Having said that, I'm still enjoying it so I'll watch the rest. I used to watch Sabrina all those years ago, I'm liking their new take on it. I couldn't get past the first ep of Riverdale, so I can't compare.

Watched the first two episodes of the new Sabrina and I gotta say I’m not impressed. It was all very meh and that blur effect they overuse is annoying. The Sabrina and Harvey relationship is a total snoozefest in this one.

The original Sabrina was much better at the lighthearted moments. Plus, it had a talking Salem! The darker aspects of witchcraft reminded me of Salem (WGN show) and were much better done in that show.

Not sure if I’ll finish this TBH. I love witch shows (even the new Charmed is getting better after the awful premiere episode) but this is just not doing it for me. I might watch it if I have nothing else to watch, but I can’t say I care either way whether I see it again.

Oh, and the whole conflict of the show is choosing between her mortal side and witch side. But her mortal life is so dull, I just wanted her to sign the damn book and go to the magical school.

You heard right, it's in the last episode of part one. But yeah, if you're not into the show it can be hard to force yourself to watch. I can see the weaknesses in the show, but I was interested enough to keep going anyway. I'm hoping some of the writing will be rectified as the show goes on, if it lasts that long  :shrug It has potential :-)

I almost wish I hated it. But it illicits no emotions in me. I just find it utterly uninteresting. If I ever do finish it, I do hope it gets better for me.

It was Halloween and I just happened to watch episodes 3 of two new witch shows: Charmed and Sabrina!

I’m really starting to like Charmed. They’re improving with every episode.

And, I thought episode 3 of Sabrina was the best yet! Maybe because it mostly focused on the witch world? Even Harvey became a bit more interesting because of his crappy home life.

Found that I could download the CW app to my Roku and I've been watching Charmed. The first episode was better than I expected and I'm on the third episode now. The only problem I have is the repetitive commercials. They'll repeat the same commercial anywhere from 2-6 times in a row. If I can get past that, I'll keep watching.

I record all my shows so I can skip the commercials. Having to sit through commercials would drive me mad. Though I guess you could always turn them into mini writing sprints!

If you have Netflix, all CW shows go up there 8 days after the season ends on TV.

Just started watching this. And I'm surprised by how much I enjoy it. I think it's because both the script and the acting is really excellent. I can't figure out why I care about the main character as he is clearly an absolutely self centered snob, but for some reason, I do. I'm curious how exactly the writers did that.

I managed to watch the first episode free here in the UK (a TV Guide sent a link to watch it) but never saw the other eps as I don't have Sky TV. Thought Cumberbatch was fantastic in the role.

I've been catching up on Outlander. Still on series 1 but a few eps away from the prison episode (I've read the first five books so know what's coming). Great to see so many genuinely Scottish actors in it. Unfortunately the actress playing Gheillis Duncan had a dodgy Scots accent.

I've also caught up with The Man in the High Castle. Gosh, series 4 is going to be good!

At last, a fellow Outlander fan!!!! I started a thread to discuss Season 4 but didn't have any takers.

They got very graphic between Jamie and Black Jack so I skipped that episode. My only disappointment in the season was the Abbey. They diluted the scene between Jamie and Claire where she made him think she was Black Jack and made him fight back. It would have been a fantastic scene. Instead, they just had a conversation. Other than that, Ron Moore has done a wonderful job and added scenes that really enhanced the story.

You skipped that episode? But it’s the thing that makes it so different from all the other romances out there. The fact that they were willing to go there with the male hero. It’s been a while since I’ve seen it, but Claire did dress up as Black Jack and used his scent to provoke a reaction out of Jamie to help him heal after the incident.

I’m not a book reader, so I can only comment on the TV series, but I loved the first two seasons. I thought season 3 was very uneven. I don’t get Starz, so I watch the show when it comes out on Blu-ray, so I can’t join the discussion on the new season.
Spoiler: ShowHide
I have to say that I’m not too excited about the new direction of the show. America just does not compare to Scotland! And from what I’ve read, the rest of the books take place in America. Also, the romance was always the least interesting part of the show for me. I need plot! It also doesn’t help that two of my favorite characters (Black Jack and Geillis Duncan) are dead.  :icon_cry:

You convinced me. I'll go back and watch that episode.

The books went downhill after Voyager (3) anyway but not because it moved to America. There is the revolution, of course, to supply action. It's just Gabaldon didn't run out of story, but she ran out of ideas. Too many kidnappings, not to mention her writing style changed. As she thinks of a scene, she writes it. Doesn't matter where in the story it's going to land. Then she puts them in some sort of order and knits them together. I've read them all just because but I think the series is now much better than the books. I won't be reading any more of the books.

Fergus was my favorite secondary character but starting with book 4, Young Ian became my favorite.

None of them, in my opinion, were as good as the first book.

Just watched the first episode of #4 based on The Fiery Cross. A lot of it was ho-hum, but Stephen Bonnett, oh my. Ed Speelers nailed him.

Comet screwed up my normal TV viewing by moving the shows I watch into prime time instead of after prime time, but I find I don't miss the new shows as much and end up skipping them and watching older shows instead.

So I watch Stargate: SG-1 followed by Babylon 5.  Every night, seven days a week.  If I'm home.  After that, I switch the channel to Friends which runs for like two or three hours straight every night.

On Sundays, I watch new episodes of Doctor Who and The Last Ship but the series finale for The Last Ship is this Sunday so that will be done and they've somehow managed to turn Doctor Who into a snooze-fest.  I keep seeing rave reviews for it and continually wonder if people are watching the same show I am.

I only watch TV at night and one episode (1.5 hours) of Inspector George Gently gets me through the evening. If I watch in the afternoon, I turn on old episodes of Project Runway. The show is switching back to Bravo from Lifetime and I don't know if the new shows will be seen on Hulu.

Weekly shows are The Rookie, DWTS, and Outlander.  I don't have cable or satellite so I mostly watch Hulu, Starz and Amazon Prime.

Awww, I love Julia Roberts and was hoping this would turn out to be good. Oh well.

I just watched the first season of The Sinner.

I enjoyed Jessica Biel and Bill Pullman, but I thought the plot was too slow and it didn't work for me as a mystery. Not enough material for the viewer to guess / figure things out and too many plot holes, or what I feel are plot holes.

I gave up on Arrow midway through last season. The only way I’m watching that show again is if they get rid of Felicity. So, basically never! LOL! I watch Flash but it’s not my favorite or anything. I’ve never watched Supergirl.

As for Legends...

Spoiler: ShowHide
I was sad when Snart died as well, but as long as my favorite (Sara Lance) is there, I’ll keep watching. I will say, the show has really gotten better during the last two seasons or so. They don’t take themselves too seriously anymore and it’s really fun to watch now!

I haven't seen Legends this season and have only seen a half an episode of The Flash.  Haven't seen Supergirl either.

The first couple episodes I missed weren't intentional.  I was working late at the office and missed them.  But I haven't been tuning in otherwise either.  They're on at the same time as Stargate: SG-1 and Babylon 5 reruns on Comet.  So Comet has been winning out.  Same with Doctor Who.  I've never missed a new episode if I was home to watch it, but this season has been so bleh that Babylon 5 episodes win out.  I catch up on Doctor Who by reading the summaries online.

-Some interesting ideas, but more often than not I found the storytelling ponderous and the drama overwrought. I wish it had been more about the horror and the ghosts and less about inter-family dynamics and kitchen sink drama.

House of Cards, Season 6

- Utterly ridiculous to the point of being laughable. Who greenlit these scripts? Hammy acting (though I thought Robin Wright was pretty good given the material she had to work with) and just over-the-top soap opera motivations and reveals. If "torture-porn" is a thing in over-the-top horror movies, then consider this show "conniving-scheme-porn". All that was missing was a character literally twirling their mustache. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, the show hasn't been good since perhaps the first or second season.

Almost through the first season of Man In The High Castle: Amazon sent a free Prime trial so we thought we should watch everything we might want to watch before it expires.

To be honest, while it started well, it's getting a bit dull. I'm hoping something happens soon. It's one of Dick's books that I've never read, so I don't know how it compares to the original story, but it's starting to feel like an alternate-world soap-opera where nothing is ever going to be resolved.

I've been binge-watching NYPD Blue, hoping to get through it before it leaves Hulu.

Damn good show.

Watched the second episode of The Rookie. So far, so good.

Now I'm waiting for the second season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (December 5). Finally!!!

I've only heard of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel yesterday. I think I need to give it a try!

One of the reasons I loved it was the setting in 1958. And, of course, Tony Shaloub. They're all wonderful, really.

Well, thank you so much. Just finishing up season one and I enjoyed it a lot  :icon_mrgreen:

Season two of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel started tonight. Loved the first episode. I think the whole season is available but I'm going to try to watch only one episode a night.

Recently finished...

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina - This is one of those shows where it seems like the middle was the best part. I think my favorite episode is “Feast of Feasts”. I also really liked “The Trial of Sabrina Spellman” and “The Burial” if I remember correctly. The first few episodes were disappointing and so were the last two. Some of the writing on this show is so bad that I felt bad for the actors that had to say those lines. Still, there’s hope that the second season might be more fun.

Murdoch Mysteries: Season 11 - Some interesting choices but still going strong. All the main characters are likable, but I love Dr. Julia Ogden! As long as she’s there, I’ll continue watching. I’m also looking forward to checking out the Frankie Drake Mysteries by the same creators. If you like shows in a similar vein, I also highly recommend Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries.

Currently watching (and looking forward to)...

Legends of Tomorrow is AMAZING, especially these last two episodes. This show is so fun and out there, it’s hard not to like! I’m also beyond glad that Constantine ended up on this show. He’s played by the same actor as the short-lived NBC show, of which I could only stomach a few episodes. LOT isn’t afraid to explore Constantine’s bisexuality, something which can’t be said about the homophobic showrunner of the NBC show (who also famously straightwashed Leonardo da Vinci). Rant over. LOT awesome, will probably get cancelled because I love it too much!

I’m liking where the new Charmed is going. They’re doing some interesting things that weren’t explored on the original show. Blindspot is better this season than last. Midnight, Texas is also doing well in its second season. Manifest is interesting enough. Dirty John has Juno Temple in it so I can’t complain! The Flash is okay. Some episodes are better than others. Can’t wait for How to Get Away with Murder to come back from their break. Love that show! I’m also looking forward to season 3 of Travelers, which is coming this Friday on Netflix. Oh, and I’m halfway through Channel Zero: The Dream Door, and I’m quite liking it so far!

Yes, I watch a lot of TV.  grint

I'm still waiting for Season 2 of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel.

Wasn't sure quite what to expect, but so far it's like a more serious version of Galaxy Quest, or Star Trek but with real people.

I was just talking to someone about Steve Allen's Meeting of the Minds series from the 70s. He moderated discussions between famous historical characters like DaVinci, Catherine the Great, Einstein, etc. Although considering the title of your series, I think the vibe may have been very different.  :hehe

My wife gifted me the Seinfeld boxed set for Festivus so, we'll be working our way through the series. Haven't watched Seinfeld in a while, ever since we got rid of TV a few years back. Was hoping the show would be added to Netflix, but thus far it hasn't happened. But, now that we've got the discs I'm looking forward to the re-watch. Definitely one of my favorite shows.

Finished The Orville. I have to say, it's the best Star Trek since Kirk.

Yes, I keep hearing good things about 'The Orville'. I hear that it's better than 'Star Trek: Discovery'. Has that been your experience? Anyway, looking forward to catching up with that show at some point.

I haven't seen Discovery: I think it's only available with a subscription somewhere, isn't it? But I was never a fan of any of the post-Kirk series. DS9 seemed like the best of them, though I've only seen a few episodes of that one.

Just finished watching Daredevil Season 3.

I just kind of lost interest in the whole Marvel/Netflix cinematic universe. I blame Stupid-Fist. It all got too convoluted for me. I did watch the first two seasons of Daredevil though. Thanks for the thumbs up, I'll have to go back and watch season 3. (I did really like The Punisher though.)

I started this when it came out, got bored and then recently tried again. It's a lot like Vampire Diaries, just making it up as it goes along. But it's got just enough going for it, mainly Monroe and Rosalee, to make it compelling.

But I ran across this on Netflix...

Holy sh*t!!!!

This is so out there, so dark, so f*cked up - I'm still not sure if I even like it yet, but I think I do. It's Disney meets Tarantino, seriously twisted and disturbed...

I read terrible reviews for Iron Fist and avoided it. I watched a few episodes of Luke Cage and found it boring. Same with Jessica Jones. But like you, I was really pleased with The Punisher.

FWIW, Daredevil season 3 occurs immediately following events in The Defenders. The latter is worth watching if only because it adds context to the former. It had a few good moments, but overall was boring. How do you create a series following four smash-mouth brawlers and make it boring?

I dunno. But they managed to do it.

Watched episode one of the original Mission Impossible. I'd forgotten that Steven Hill played the leader of the IMF the first season. I still can't relate that young Steven Hill to Adam Schiff on Law and Order.

Also watched the first episode of Meeting of Minds with Steve Allen. They started out with Theodore Roosevelt, Cleopatra, Thomas Aquinas and Thomas Paine. I found it just as interesting now as I did fifty years ago.

Finished this series yesterday...

Unexpectedly wonderful. The first season is a little slow as it's devoted to world-building. Things quickly kick into fifth gear in season two.

Ensemble cast, consistently great writing, wonderful pacing, and terrific characters arcs. Plus, the seasons are short; there are no filler episodes.

Black Sails is currently on Hulu.

I'm still watching The Closer.  Does anyone know where to find Major Crimes?  I don't think that it's on Netflix or Amazon Prime.

I'm in the final season of Father Brown.  I will miss this one.

Midsomer Murders - I already miss Troy.  I'm not too keen on Scott yet.

Corner Gas - My husband keeps watching episodes without me.  It's so funny, and Saskatchewan is just lovely.  We don't have cable, so I haven't watched the animated series.

I really want to watch "Line of Duty". We don't have access to any streaming services, and the DVD rental places are closing down one by one so I was pretty excited to find it at the last DVD rental place in our area.

But we couldn't watch it past the cold open. My husband has been having a stressful time at work, and we've just heard that a friend committed suicide last week. The violence in the opening scene was just too much for my husband after hearing the bad news.

Does anyone know how typical that is of the rest of the series? I don't think we should watch it now, if it carries on like that.

My son bought me the box set of Line of Duty for my birthday last year.

He said - "You won't like this at all, but it's brilliant so you should watch it!"

He knows that my preference is for entertaining telly or action movies (think Buffy and Die Hard).

I didn't "like" Line of Duty, but I was riveted. I watched the whole of the first series on my birthday evening until silly o'clock in the morning, because I had to know what happened.

There is no light to the dark and some very unpleasant moments.

What is interesting, though, is that there is no black and white. No one is "good" and no one "bad". The people who do really bad things are usually led down a path of bad choices where they find themselves trapped into doing things they never thought they would.

Somehow you are carried with them and see how they got themselves into the position where no good choices remain.

After I had watched the whole lot (three series) I swore I would never re-watch it. But I did watch series one again and found myself sympathising with the character I had hated with a passion first time round.

That tells you something about how cleverly the boundaries are blurred.

Brilliant. But hard watching.

I have just watched "Bodyguard" (UK TV series 2018) and I was underwhelmed.

When it was showing on TV I saw lots of comments about it and how good it was, but waited for the box set because I hate waiting a whole week for new episodes and prefer to binge-watch.

Perhaps my expectations were raised too high by all the praise.

It wasn't bad, but there were definitely moments where my disbelief was not suspended and I just thought "Nah! that wouldn't happen."

I've lent it to a friend, but will re-watch it when I get it back. Sometimes I appreciate things more a second time round.

I've moved on to "Poldark" and am loving it!

Which Poldark? The new one or the original? I haven't watched the new one because I absolutely loved the original. It's been a lot of years so my memory may be blurred enough to avoid comparisons.

I'm watching the second season of The Punisher right now.

Before that I watched through the season and a half of Black Lightning that's available on Netflix. The first season was pretty good. Concise story. The second season though... is completely off the rails. I couldn't even tell you what the plot is now.

I'm binging on Blue Heelers on Amazon Prime.  For some strange reason I've always had a weakness for Australian TV shows.

Which Poldark? The new one or the original? I haven't watched the new one because I absolutely loved the original. It's been a lot of years so my memory may be blurred enough to avoid comparisons.

The new one.

I didn't watch it first time round as I had recently re-watched the original one, which I too absolutely love.

But my son and daughter kept telling me how good the new version was, so it was only a matter of time before I tried it.

Now into the second series I am fully taken by the new characters - Ross is Ross and Demelza is Demelza.

Frances is good, but he lacks the charm which was always his redeeming feature.

It may take an episode or two to adjust to the new version, but one you have it is a complete joy.

Then I shall add it on to my list once Outlander is over.

Thanks for this.
It makes me want to watch the series :)  Sounds a bit like "The Wire" which is my favourite of all series.

Finished season 2 of The Punisher.

What a mess. And not in a cool damn-the-Punisher-created-a-huge-bloody-mess-in-that-scene way. More of a what-the-hell-am-I-watching or someone-please-jumpstart-this-story way.

All of the MCU series suffer from bloat. Daredevil gets away with it because the writing, directing, and acting are great. The Punisher is inconsistent in those three areas.

The first three episodes...

The following nine episodes...

My post made it seem as if season 2 moves at a snail's pace. In truth, there's plenty of action. But it's like watching a Michael Bay film. It's too much (for me).

I liked the pacing of season 1. There were tons of quiet moments where Castle and Lieberman would just talk. Those moments were punctuated by short sequences of insane, grisly violence. The thing that made the quiet moments work is that there was purpose to the conversations. In season 2, the conversations seem like filler.

Lightfoot and Kristensen started season 2 really well. Then, it seems like they gave the writing chores to the B-team and the season got away from them.

I'd love to hear what you think after you've completed the season.

I'm watching Roswell, New Mexico. It's a reboot of the original Roswell, which I loved as a teen, but it's not the same. I mean, Roswell was about alien teenagers, this one is about the same characters as adults, and it's a perfect example of what we called New Adult in books, frequent sex included.

I think is well-made, and it's available free on the WP website, I supposed there are geographical restrictions, but the episodes are available on YouTube.

I'm obviously new to this thread & this series [Line of Duty], but a couple of things:

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the "until silly o'clock in the morning" ... I do that with way too many online venues! (And I Work Full Time!!!!)

And your description of the brilliance of painting shades of gray so that you even were willing to go back and re-watch are intriguing & I shall see if I can find this series!

I think I'm going to go back to watching George Gently tonight. I was about halfway through Season 7 when the Christmas season started. I made it my goal to watch one silly Christmas movie every night and then forgot my friend, George. There's only one more season after this.

I've just reached the finale of Mr. Sunshine, a Korean historical drama. Such a great series, though I wish it was longer and this finale has me bawling.

Heh. Snap.

PS it's on stan.com.au for aussies. (A$10/month for their cheapest sub. Well worth it IMO.)

Watched the first 2.5 seasons of Black Sails & really loved it; then for some reason got distracted. I need to go back & completely start over, because it was quite good.

I'd love to hear what you think after you've completed the season.

On The Punisher Season 2:

I watched the Assault on Precinct 13 episode, and that was pretty cool. Now, I'm on to the beginning of end - episode 4...

It's slow going because I started re-watching this...

So good!
