Thought it would be nice to have a thread to see who's here and if we're using the same name, etc.

Changed my name (from Acheknia) in the other place & removed sig & profile pic then decided to have the new name here.  :icon_biggrin:

Damn, one thing I hated about the other place is the pink notice that somebody else posted while I was writing, do I want to review my post? NO, I bloody don't, I wrote it, therefore I intended to post it. Grrrrrr! Sad to see that's here too. Does my head in  :icon_frown:

Same name, except for when I post it upside-down.  Or when I deleted my name entirely and changed it to a symbol when I logged out of there for what will probably be the second-to-last time.

I'm here and still there - kinda. Change may be good, but it's also sad. I joined KBoards back in 2008 when it was Kindle Boards because of my fascination with the device. It's where I first heard of KDP (DTP back then), and there wasn't even a Writers' Cafe yet.

However, I'm so glad for this board instead of some Facebook thing.

Hi folks. After reading the kerfuffle at KB, I decided to get in on the ground floor here. I can't say how active I'll be, but I'm optimistic  :grouphug:
I confess the direction of the modding had left me feeling alienated and the VS thing was just the last straw.
I hope that Tim Ellis can make a go of this. I expect that there will be a continued migration here.

I'm sort of horrified, to tell you the truth, but I have a feeling they'll grow on me. But I'm sorry, that rock n roll banana is not riding a llama. Who ever heard of a green llama? Clearly, it's Nessie.

love you Becca!

Wait ... all those emojis and no kissy face?? We've been robbed.

Thanks Mark, love you too!   :azn:

Not to hijack this for a real discussion, but I actually do need emoticons usually to help me figure out how to take something someone said. :D I think that's why I overuse them myself. I just can't help but assign voices to words and what I hear in my head doesn't always match how someone meant for me to hear what they said. :) I have to do a lot of edits to my posts to eliminate excess emoticons most of the time. In fact, big confession, but I have to actually watch myself to keep from putting them in my fiction when I'm writing. It's totally weird. But I'll write something that makes me smile and boom, there's the smiley staring back at me at the end of the sentence. :o

Emoji are super-useful, definitely. I think they're here to stay. But here's a question for you: are they marks of punctuation, or are they words?

Continuing the thread derail... with emojis

Punctuation.

Also, I'm not terribly fond of them, but it was really weird here when they broke. And you could see the missing emojis. Happy to see them back.

Lastly, I really really wish I had the old newsgroup list of all the text emojis and their meanings that circulated somewhere between 1984 and 1986... It was cool to read at the time. And I've always wondered how many of them lasted. I can't remember how long the list was, but over 20, at least. Probably 30-50.

I'm the same way.  I used to hate them as much as Mark does.  I thought they were childish and silly.  Then I started to realize that an awful lot of the arguments I saw on the internet were the result of people misinterpreting "tone."  Those arguments might have been avoided by the use of emoticons.  I didn't want to contribute to that sort of miscommunication if I could help it, so I started using emoticons on a regular basis.

My god, Timothy, the emojis ...

They're beautiful, aren't they?  You can never have enough.   :band:

I'd say they are textual units equal to sentences.
Let's say, this one  means "I love you", a stand-alone sentence.

"I love you?" I think not. More like, "I consume your life force to sustain myself." I mean, just look at that poor dedicated corpse. But then again, when far are involved...

Isn't it totally the same?

The new TOS didn't worry me, but Helena's unprofessionalism led me to do some more research on VerticalScope, so now I'm here.

Migrating over here with the same avatar but a slightly different name - I was a newbie and lurker before so I doubt anyone knows me. Hoping to be more active now!

Because my name was always anonymous, the TOS didn't stress me out too much, but the lack of professionalism shown towards the community by new admins was too much.

Hey folks. I am glad to join the roll call here. Same username (it's real, as far as that goes), and avatar (that's me at work, having just shut my laptop as a courtesy to the photographer).

I'm still amazed at what all happened at The Other Place. I wonder if they'll send the good cop (better CS or BS) next, or the bad cop (lawyers).

Using my donkey's name here, and maybe as a new pen name, too.

Looking forward to this forum growing and becoming a great community for writers and publishing, in general.

Reporting for duty. Same name, different avatar - figured I'd give you all a break from my ugly mug.

I was one of those waiting to see what would happen over on kboards - then Helena happened. Although I haven't requested that my account there be deleted, I'm not keen on being overly active on a forum where the owner's response to a valid concern is 'so sue me'.

Nice to see so many familar names - hope many more join and this becomes the kboards that once was.

Same name, same avatar to which I have no commercial rights, since it's a Pre-Raphaelite painting of Medea.

Even when a contract is clearly unenforceable, I won't sign. Especially when it is inapt and a rights grab, I won't sign. I've walked away with zero regrets from several instances of contracts that were rights grabs, or loyalty oaths, or attempting to control my future actions.

In this situation I have little to lose, since I don't use my real name here and I sign up to websites using an email address that does not connect to my main one. But having little to lose isn't the point.

The emojis are a little...busy.

Edited to correct parallel construction. I should know better.

Using same name as at kboards (though I think I capitalized it here). Recently known there as unknownwriter.

Just a note to folks, please remove the kboards affiliate code from your signatures. Why give them any chance to make more money off you? I think Timothy has his own code, use yours, or don't have one. It's easy enough to remove, if you copied over the links from kboards (as I did, once I found them again using the Link Maker).

Holy cow, I need to figure out how to resize the book covers in my sig. The new ones I just added to the old code showed up GINORMOUS.

I hope it didn't scare anyone who saw it before I hurried up and deleted my sig.  :icon_redface:

ETA: Figured it out. I just had to put a lower number as the last element of each URL.

I didn't post often enough for you to know me from a can of spam, but I was a major lurker and I'm glad to see you here Becca  Grin

Hey, Becs.  I saw you registered earlier, but I wasn't sure if you'd post or not.  Glad to see you did.

Thanks Cranky and Jeff! :mhk9U91:

I stand corrected on the lack of a kissie emoji. Um ... love how the guy's eyeballs pop off ...  :icon_eek:

I'm here. Not that anyone knows me, but hi!

Hi Susanne!

<waves> Figured I'd better stake out a place here, in case I get tossed out on my ear over there.

My god, Timothy, the emojis ...

I'm responding for two reasons.

One to say ... So glad to see you here, Becca.

Two ... I just had to see these emojis.   :Tup3a:

 :band:     :band:

Hi Maggie Ann! Only one question: why thumbs-up once, when you can, you know, do it four times in slightly different ways?

Thanks for the new forum, Timothy. I was mostly a lurker on kboards but it has been so important in my writing journey. I'm anxiously watching for more of those who posted (or used to post) frequently over there to show up here. I've learned so much from them, and enjoy their kindness/snark/humor/wisdom/courage and their willingness to share real life experience as successful authors.  (Amanda, Rosalind, Monique, Patty, Wayne, PhoenixS to name a few.) Timothy, EB, Pauline and Boyd are other favorites and they're already here!   (I know I'll think of more people I should have included, but these are the ones who came to mind first.)

The blessing is it affords me the opportunity to work proofreading and copy editing with a number of authors whose work I greatly enjoy. I'm always LDB or LDB415 depending on forum requirements.

Look, we, the in-group know that this is a llama that was caught in an unfortunate tagging incident. Those in the out-group are suffering from some sort of collective dissonance, but her, it's 2018- we're a tolerant in-group.

I just have to say that, even though I'm not interested in erotica discussions (no offense intended), I might have considered joining if you got a Fig Newton instead of a fig leaf.

The enticements around here need some work.

I noticed that your signature still has the Kboard affiliate ID, just letting you know, in case you don't know.

Hugs!

I noticed it early but lost my Forum Profile link (as in I don't have one) so have no clue how to change it!!  :icon_think:

Good to see you here, Becca. Lots of familiar faces which is nice.  :smilie_zauber:

No idea what that emoji means...he turns himself into Skittles or something.

I appreciate randomness.

Randomness and Skittles -- both underrated. :)

To all those that think this ->  :banana-riding-llama-smiley-em is a banana riding a slug, where do you live that's causing slugs to become radioactive and glow green and grow mutant legs?

*Exactly*. It's much more likely a relic plesiosaur.

Plesiosaurs swim.  Bananas don't.  So it's either a green llama or that banana has a silly grin because he's drowning and has lost oxygen to his brain.

Same name, same avatar to which I have no commercial rights, since it's a Pre-Raphaelite painting of Medea.

Even when a contract is clearly unenforceable, I won't sign. Especially when it is inapt and a rights grab, I won't sign. I've walked away with zero regrets from several instances of contracts that were rights grabs, or loyalty oaths, or attempted to control my future actions.

In this situation I have little to lose, since I don't use my real name here and I sign up to websites using an email address that does not connect to my main one. But having little to lose isn't the point.

The emojis are a little...busy.
Lily, you made it. I wasn't sure that you wouldn't just walk away- with like explosions in the background, and you don't even flinch.

I have to respond to this. That person is the person I am in my head.

Wait, that was Jack Black in The Jackal. Wow. I just thought of him as Mouse from Beauty and the Beast (the original TV series). But maybe that wasn't him.

I plan to see Jumanji, but I've never actually seen him in a movie he starred in, either.

Well, he didn't headline in The Jackal, but he gave an Oscar-worthy performance.

Also, Dan...you may have been page one, but I signed up an entire twenty minutes before you. The Riff-Raff invaded early! Muah-wa-ha!

Jumanji! Just watched it a week or so ago. I didn't want to because I loved the original Robin Williams  :icon_cry: movie. But GD had seen it several times in the theaters and she convinced me. I'm glad it was so different. And Jack Black was so cool. I'll have to check out some of his other movies.

I'm here, too. I've added formerly to my user name. However, I've never been anonymous since my real name is on the front of my books. I have a busy week and my tech skills are negligible so I won't be adding my avatar or books until I have time to figure it out. I'm still sad about what happened over there but feeling much better after seeing so many familiar names here.

That's the code for your KBs sig. For some reason Google doesn't have your avatar showing in cache as well, so I can't help you with that. Just make sure to make whatever changes need to be made for it to work here, and that there's nothing you should remove from it, i.e. anything VS may have added. It's from a July 2nd cache, so maybe not. I can't remember the date mayhem ensued.

For anyone else looking for a pre-VS version of your sig, check Google cache.

Like many here, I was a daily lurker on The Other Board but hardly ever posted. I did, however, learn SO much and I will forever be grateful to so many of you for that. Given that this is an entirely new forum, it seems like a good time to jump in and be more involved.

Also, I’m super stoked that, for the first time ever, I was able to claim just my first name as a username

Hi, I am another Aussie, living in Melbourne. I write fantasy and have written poetry in the past. I have my first novel in what I would like to think is the final stages prior to publication. I also lurked on the other forum, and was about to post when everything went pear-shaped. I will try to be more active here, although it's debatable what I can add, given the experience of others.

Griffin here. Similar story to a lot of folks popping up. Longtime lurker over at Kboards. I regret not participating now the party's over. But, thanks to Timothy, the community I've grown to anonymously love in 60 minutes a day or less on my lunch break and sometimes after work is getting a second wind. I'm happy to see so many familiar names in the Sanctum. Still hoping for a few more. Patty? Parker? X? Amanda?  :grouphug:

Anyway... I know this will sound stalkerish, but I'm going to say it anyway: You don't know me, but I know a lot of you, and I'm going to push past my social anxiety this time and get in on the action. Glad to be here with everyone.

I'm here under my real name and photo, as I was at KB.

I joined Kboards in 2010 and found great advice there over the years. I posted a lot in the early years, then I became mostly a lurker with the occasional post.

I imagine there are a lot of people like me who visit the forum often to get advice--or just to feel the sense of community with other writers who grapple with the same challenges, even if we don't often feel able to add useful comments.

So thank you to all the writers who do post regularly and share their wisdom. And thank you, too, to Tim for setting up this new space.

Here. Same name, new avatar. I posted less and less at the WC but I did lurk pretty regularly to keep tabs on all the developments. Hoping to be more active here as I get back into a writing and releasing groove and have something to contribute. Thanks, Timothy. Losing this community would have been epically worse than watching a familiar forum implode.

Hello, everyone! I used to use my real name/author name over at the other place, but trying something different this time around. It's not that I'm trying to be anonymous or anything, but I just didn't like how if you'd Google my name, my forum posts would be one of the first things that came up! Yikes, no thanks!

So, probably nobody remembered me much anyway. I posted quite often back in the day, around 2012-2014 or so, and then went into lurker mode during the creation and aftermath of my second novel. I think I mostly used my real photo for an avatar over there, but this is the avatar I use on Twitter and several other places. It is, in fact, a paper craft self portrait!  grint

Hiyas :)  Glad to be here; I was a frequent poster at KB eons ago, long before there was a Writer's Cafe or anything like it...somewhere along the way (probably when I got a new computer and lost my bookmarks) I kinda forgot to go back, until a couple years had passed. I missed it, but dang, it got so *big* that even after I found my way back, I rarely popped in.
I was Thumper there; decided here to stick to something closer to my own name. And I am really looking forward to diving in here!

Big Woohoo to see the "All" option for viewing all pages. On Kboards, that only worked when there were fewer than four pages.

Found this thread through a suggestion for having an introductions section... Hasn't been posted in for a while but I'm guessing this is the right spot?

If not, please show me the right door.  :hehe

I'm new to Writer Sanctum. I found this place through a comment on KBoards and I see a lot of familiar faces here. I wasn't on the other site during whatever it was that prompted the creation of this one, however I do like that there are so many sections here dedicated to writing that are also genre-specific. It'll be nice to get involved in more writing-related discussions since I'm both a writer and an editor.

My "private" writing has always been sci-fi while all of my public writing has always been fantasy. I'd like to blur that a little, and maybe talking about the genres will help with that. :)

Ah, yes, right, I'm a Canadian, living on the west coast, yada yada, like long walks on the beach. I'm a very interesting person. Maybe.
