I was waffling about going to the library this morning (I do my best writing there) because I had some errands to run this morning, but my muse (Fiona) had other ideas. Started to walk out the door, but I automatically picked up the messenger bag with my AlphaSmart in it and drove to the library. Wrote 1254 words. Fiona obviously knows best.

Sounds like the lame space opera isn't so lame with all those words you've been adding.

It's not good.

I wrote 1,085 words on it on Saturday and another 1,065 words on Sunday.  (Giving my a five day average of 1,134 words per day.)  Or, I should say I rewrote that many words.  I started this lame space opera in May of 2016 before it went on the backburner for a while.  I've worked on it sporadically ever since.  Then, when getting close to finishing the fantasy epic, I started looking at it again as the next book to finish.  I realized I had what I had so far in it, plus a short story from several years ago that would be usable, plus a different short story from around the same time plus a series of three shorts I wrote a few years after that.  They were all space humor stuff and I figured by merging characters and rewriting the whole thing, I could marry them all together into one cohesive book that I could finish relatively quickly and get out prior to my other space opera being finished.

But, it's not going so well.  I'm trying to keep a lighter tone with this one, especially coming off the fantasy epic which had some dark (and adult) moments in it, and one of the short stories had an adult scene.  But, I've managed to silly it up (I hope) which makes it less adult despite a couple characters being completely naked in the scene.  But then the three story series that are the bulk of what I have written and would thus become the bulk of this book are a completely different style than everything else.

Melding the styles into one style is proving more difficult than merging characters.

Would possibly be easier if I hadn't apparently completely lost my ability to write humor.

That's why I dumped my lame medieval historical romance. You lost your ability to write humor. I seem to have lost my ability to write historicals. I finally gave up the struggle. I was forcing the story and I didn't particularly like the characters. And I was only writing maybe once a week.

I'm now working on a contemporary mystery with some romance elements. Or it might be a contemporary romance with some mystery elements. Not sure. But I'm writing nearly every day. I don't know if I'll be able to keep it up, but so far, so good.

You shouldn't have to tie yourself in knots to write a story. Hard to type that way, anyway.

Brevity is the soul of wit.  My advice: go watch the movie Fletch Lives.  Nothing does quick-hitting humor as well as that movie.  Watching it should help get your brain in the right gear.

Thank for the welcome! Meant to come back yesterday to say I finished editing book 2 and got another 1800 words on book 3.

Anyway, I'm writing a story for an anthology themed "swashbuckling cats" aka any ocean-going felines. I've always wanted to write a pirate/mermaid romance. So I'm sort of doing Treasure Island meets The Little mermaid with lesbian cats. I'm trying to think of a good name for the mermaid cats. I didn't like purrmaid, so right now I'm going with merkitty. Wanted something gender neutral so I didn't need a separate term for the boys. Half the characters are merkitties, the other half are regular cats who are pirates.

Already is a romance and I keep going back and forth with that. I'm genetically incapable of writing anything without a romance in it. 

There are four main characters and my goal is a four book series. Two men have also popped up in the story that will do for two of the friends and I'm sure another one will poke his head out of the woodwork soon.

The last mystery/romance series I wrote consisted of 50 pages, 114 pages, 91 pages and 101 pages, and it's my best seller. The bundle is 309 pages and hardly sells at all. Maybe I should just stick to what works. I'm already at novella length (barely), and if I stop worrying about how many words/pages I need, the story will end when it's supposed to end.
