Critique Policy

Until this was mentioned, I'd not thought about it in a long time.

What tends to happen, is someone asks for help about something, and a whole lot of people jump in and start tearing the book and everything to do with it apart.

On the one hand, a lot of good information and advise is given, but quite often the asker just wanted specific help on a specific issue.

On the other hand, too much always freaks out the asker, and scares them off, or makes them defensive.

On the gripping hand, sometimes what is being asked about is not the real problem, or only part of it.

So some guidelines:

If asking for help, specify "No Critiquing" if all you want is a simple answer. By all means quantify how much answer you want. We'll get a smilie for the job in due course. It gives a moderator permission to split off any answer not specific to the question. Report any post ignoring this.

When answering, check the first post for a "No Critiquing" tag, either in words or a smilie when we get one. It it's there, keep your answer to the topic only. A critique in a no critique thread, will be split off and might become a zombie.

Please use your common sense, and not get carried away. If you think the problem is somewhere else, ask if they want to hear about it. Don't just dump. We dont need zombie dump. No means no.

No also means don't PM them instead. PM harassment is a serious thing.

Remember, we are all entitled to ask any question, and limit how much of an answer we want.

What we dont want here is people leaving because they asked about a blurb, and had their cover and sample torn apart in noxious detail. If its about a blurb, stick to the blurb. If the OP opens doors later in the thread, then you can answer whats behind the door. But not before.

In short, those asking questions should be precise in what they ask. And those answering should stick to the question. And everyone be nice.  Grin

So refreshing, well done Timothy!

I have often seen people scared off (not here but on KBoards) by too much critiquing when they only wanted a little bit of pertinent help.

It's really not good to be scared to visit one's own thread... This should help a lot. Well, as long as everyone reads it, ha.
