Title: How do I report
Post by: Maggie Ann on September 13, 2020, 10:46:59 PM
A scam on Facebook?

It's not a post but a message supposedly from one of my friends saying I won $150,000 and all I have to do is apply for a grant.

At first I wasn't suspicious, but I did some digging and it's a legitimate seniors volunteer group. But the grant is not.

I checked the help center with Facebook and couldn't find anything. I want to keep these people on the hook at least until I report it.

Not sure how, but if it's a message, then check the profile link on the right.

If there is no link there, it's a bogus bot pretending to be a friend.

I've had a few of those. And there's not been much you could do except delete the messages.

Next to the message itself, there should be 3 dots (when you mouse over the message). Click and see what the options are.

You might want to screen shot it and report it to the volunteer organization directly too.

You can phrase it, I don't know if there is anything you can do, but thought you might want to know.

I don't Facebook, but maybe since someone is misusing the name of their organization Facebook would take action if they complain.

I hate scammers.

They might want to know someone is using their name fraudulently.

Since her account is compromised I'm going to get in touch with both her son and her daughter.

If there is no profile link on the message, the account is fine. Its a copybot. Not a hackbot.

I think you are right, but I warned her anyway. She doesn't check her email very often, so I contacted her son through Facebook.

We've had this on Facebook messenger in SA. Friends' messenger accounts have been hacked and I've received this a few times. I've even had messenger phone calls supposedly from friends.  Fortunately I didn't recognise the sound of a messenger phone call and thought it was on the TV and they rang off. Might have answered it otherwise. I've had to block a couple of people while they sorted out the hack. :evil2:
