Dancer with Sergei Polunin.

I thought this was going to be a movie but it turned out to be a documentary of Polunin's journey from gymnast to principal dancer with the Royal Ballet of London. Interesting story. His family went their separate ways, moving to different countries for jobs so they could send him to ballet school, first in Kiev and then in London.

Danger Close, an Australian movie  about the Vietnam War. Pretty good and seems to be close to what actually happened, though it would have been interesting to see some of it from the Vietnamese side.

Knives Out.

I expected to like it more. It was okay.

I'd rate it a 5.

I feel the same way. Many are calling it a throwback to classic detectives but I thought it was more of the same "What really happened? Oh, here's what happened even though I didn't set it up". It's not like he left actual clues beyond some obvious hand waving. I think it's another example of Rian Johnson spending too much time showing how clever he is and not enough time telling a cohesive story. Brick was pretentious and unrealistic, Looper was a great idea that fell back on common tropes, and The Last Jedi is full of missed opportunities for great storytelling both in general and within the Star Wars universe. His pacing in all his movies is inconsistent.

I'll be honest. I paid no attention at all to who had directed this thing and didn't even know that person had also directed Looper. But now that I know, I see a pattern.

I love time travel movies and tv shows. Looper is one of those that I thought I would love but did not. I liked it, don't get me wrong, but I haven't re-watched it once, and since it is full of actors I consider good to great, and has a really cool time travel premise, I would have expected to really love it.
Don't rush me.

In an effort to catch up before the Oscars I recently saw...

Ford v Ferrari - A great story told ... good. It dips into cheesiness in a lot of scenes, but not so much to ruin it. It left me wondering if the documentary version is better (which I'll get around to finding out myself sooner or later.)

Marriage Story - Watching a relationship sour is never much fun, but if you're in for that sort of thing this is about as good as it gets.

The Irishman - Wow, was that looong for no real reason. (I improvised it into a 3 night series.) It's still good, but can't compare to Goodfellas, or even Casino for entertainment value for you want Scorcese gangsters.

Parasite - Very good. Some of the dialog is a little too on the nose, but reading it in subtitles is a lot easier than hearing it. It's up there with my favorite Best Picture nominees (1917, Once Upon a Time, and Jojo Rabbit).

I'm curious what part of Ford v Ferrari you found cheesy.

There are a lot of examples that worked to varying degrees for me (Shelby's airplane entrance was fun cheese) but here are some I found really egregious:

1) The super-tropey intro to Miles and his wife where they pretend like they don't know each other. Ugh...
2) The throwing of the wrench and reaction to it. That could kill someone, and they both acted like it was a NERF football.
3) Ford breaking down and full-on baby-crying after riding in the F40. Shocked, scared, sure but this was so over the top silly.
4) Beebe being portrayed as a Snidely level villain.

I understand some stuff will be invented to dramatize elements and tell the story in an entertaining way in a couple hours, but all of these things went beyond my boundaries. And none of those examples are based on true events/anecdotes either where you could defend them--they're just wholesale invented by a writer where someone said "wouldn't it be hilarious/suspenseful/dramatic if..." and the correct answer of "no, it would be melodramatic cheese" wasn't given in return.

(Still a good movie though. These are nitpicks.)

My husband and I finally watched Captain Marvel.  Our son hated it, so I wasn't expecting much.  However, we both really liked it.  It was kind of nice to be transported back to 1995.

I've been watching parts of movies covered by MST3000 and RiffTrax (which I didn't know existed).  I had to explain what MST3000 was to our grown daughter the other night.  My husband and I used to watch it when we were dating, so that made me feel quite old.

Watched "Evolution" movie where the alien species thrive due to heat energy even though they aren't oxygen resistant.

Makes me wonder if Corona virus thrives due to heat energy.

The head and shoulders idea based on periodic table was awesome! Something like that to nail Corona virus? Inspiration from movies!

The Foreigner on Netflix.

Solid film. (Disclaimer: I love Jackie Chan.)

Rating: 8/10. I forgot that director Martin Campbell had also directed Casino Royale...

Watched it again (on HBO). Terrific. It's Craig's first stint as Bond, and he nails it.

Rating: 9/10.

Happy Death Day

Interesting to see how dreams, nightmares manifest. Dreams can be tricky, very misleading. A puzzle is given, usually in the form of a montage, early morning, by the subconscious mind for you, the conscious mind to solve. You need to decipher the intentions correctly using mojos and omens encountered recently, and by substituting one character with another, or by considering a parallel event. This movie resonated with me as "Miss Reliable" Mary, a psychology student does such analysis in the sixth fantasy episode. In fact, the second all-in-one shows how a dream manifests.
Nice movie to watch and appreciate but some may not like the monotone of repeating elements.

It was good and also has one of the best lines. Omar (bad guy) tells Joan (protag) that Jack (romantic interest) is dead. She replies, "Don't be ridiculous! Jack would never die without telling me!" 😁

Ad Astra

Stellar (ha, pun) cinematography but its so antiseptic it makes Nolan movies look like melodramas. It was hard to feel much of anything about the protagonist's travails. Their vision of near-future space travel is more realistic than The Expanse on TV, but not nearly as much fun.

Goldfinger. Just a fun Bond movie, although it's still annoying when they speed up the action. They did this in several of Connery's movies.

Fun to see "brand new" 1964 cars, like the Mustang, and a few others. Trying to figure out whether they really crushed a working Lincoln Continental, or if it was a wreck they fixed up just for that scene.

I remembered reading that Goldfinger's villain had such a strong German accent, all of his dialogue was dubbed. Whoever did it was pretty good. One of the Asian actors is the one who played Kato for the Pink Panther movies.

The woman who played ***** Galore just passed away this past week.

I watched Ad Astra on HBO this weekend. I really enjoyed it. Not over-played sci-fi as I am so used to seeing. In fact, I wouldn't even call it sci-fi so much as a story about life and purpose. Brad Pitt is excellent in his role.

The John Wick films are definitely targeted to a niche audience.

Personally, I love 'em. But my wife does not (to put it mildly).

Artemis Fowl was just a terrible movie, from the directing, to acting, to pacing, to structure, to plot, to characterization, to you name it. I can't believe Disney released it like that. It was a complete mess - even worse than Rise of Skywalker, which is actually saying quite a lot. On the other hand...

I don't mind a good revenge flick but this was definitely lacking in plot, character development, dialogue, the occasional funny one liner, dry, dark or not. Typically I get upset when the characters seem like real people. These were just all cardboard cutouts. The most interesting part of the movie was when the assassin who broke the rules got killed at a place that Microsoft had as a screen saver this week. My husband likes the Kill Bill Movies but he didn't think much of this one.

Question - we DVRed The Joker, which we heard was very good. Did you see that one? Where would you rate it? We have over 100 movies DVRed right now I think. Need some guidance. Thx.

Didn't care for the sequel.

Haven't seen the third one.

I'm so conflicted about the Kill Bill movies.  They have scenes that I just love and think are fantastic, but those scenes are separated by stretches of boredom and WTF.  I'd probably enjoy a fan edit of those movies a lot more than the official releases.

I loved it as well. Like Ad Astra, which I recently watched (see above), I feel like Ford vs. Ferrari did an excellent job of not over playing the race scenes, (and in Ad Astra, not overplaying the sci-fi gimmicky-ness) going for realistic as opposed to trying to push the viewers pulse rate up with unrealistic action scenes.
Great story to boot.

It just depends, a lot of people like it, obviously. It was a lot of fight/kill many people scenes in a row. Just got boring for us. To give you an example of our taste we liked Wonder Woman, up until the end, then I was saying "You're the god killer, killer him already" and my husband fell asleep. I don't mind fight scenes, or gun fights or car chase sequences, but when they go on for twenty minutes and then 5 minutes later, oh look another one, I'm out. There's something out there for everyone. And sorry to disagree, but Point Break was all Swayze. :)

Some of the best horror movies I have enjoyed this year:

Mirrors (2008)

Lights Out (2016)

Shutter (2008)

What I particularly like is how the ghost manifests in these movies.

In the first, the ghost haunts mirrors and so the protagonist paints or simply sticks color paper on all windows...any glass surface... but then the water leaks and reflection happens! Wow! Well taken scary movie! You might not want to miss what happens to the protagonist at the end. Also, the finishing style of the movie credits is impressive.

In the second movie, the ghost disappears whenever a light is turned on. With this concept the ghost is dodged... even using car headlights and Smartphone light. That's so innovative and awesome! But you might not believe how it all ends for the ghost! Wonderful, scary movie!

In the third movie, the ghost appears in the photos taken. God, all the snaps are haunted! That's scary!

The three movies reveal the background stories behind these hauntings and that's so moving and disturbing. But then, hauntings are always the outcome of abuse of some form, right?

Currently on Hulu.

Directed by William Friedkin and written by Tracy Letts. It's unsettling in the same way Bug was (directed and written by the same duo).

Matthew McConaughey is excellent.

FYI: It's NC-17. And not just because of the sexual content. There's brutal violence, too.

And I love that opening scene.  "Turn your key, sir!"   :icon_eek:

Currently on Hulu.

Directed by William Friedkin and written by Tracy Letts. It's unsettling in the same way Bug was (directed and written by the same duo).

Matthew McConaughey is excellent.

FYI: It's NC-17. And not just because of the sexual content. There's brutal violence, too.

Really liked this one. The subject matter of Bug sounded dull by comparison so I gave it a pass. Should I reconsider?

Bug feels like a stage production. Most of the scenes focus on two characters in a small setting.

There's a fair amount of psychosis involved.

Ebert put it this way in his review years ago...

"William Friedkin's latest film, "Bug," begins as an ominous rumble of unease, and builds to a shriek. The last 20 minutes are searingly intense: A paranoid personality finds its mate, and they race each other into madness."

That's a fair description.

Bug will play well if you're in the mood to watch it. I know that's vague, but I don't want to give anything away. The same can be said for Killer Joe, but Bug takes it to the next level.

I'll say this... you probably won't be indifferent to it. You'll either think, "That was good" or "What the f*ck did I just watch?!"

I should also mention a bias: I love everything Michael Shannon does.

Shannon is pretty great. Oy, Take Shelter! (I dare you to love Man Of Steel, though...)

All right. You've sold me. I'll throw it on the cue.

ETA: Netflix predicts I will give it 2.5 stars.  :shrug

Take Shelter was terrific!

As for Man of Steel... well, the man's gotta eat.

Speaking of Man of Steel, Zack Snyder is one of those directors that I really want to like, especially after Watchmen (loved it). But he keeps swinging and missing. I'm optimistic about his upcoming Army of the Dead, but mostly because I love Garret Dillahunt.

Although he increasingly tests my patience, I keep giving Snyder a pass because of Dawn of the Dead. I mean, he's no Christopher Nolan, but then half the time neither is Nolan.

+1 for War Games.

I feel the same, though the jabs at Joss Whedon during this whole Snyder Cut affair tarnish it some for me.

But he's got a great eye. Watchmen missed the mark a little for me because he seemed to overlook the far from subtle subtext of the source, but Dawn of the Dead and 300 both kind of blew me away. Even Sucker Punch had some unforgettable imagery, but boy did it expose his weaknesses as a storyteller that have dogged everything he's made since.
