Hi folks. After reading the kerfuffle at KB, I decided to get in on the ground floor here. I can't say how active I'll be, but I'm optimistic  :grouphug:
I confess the direction of the modding had left me feeling alienated and the VS thing was just the last straw.
I hope that Tim Ellis can make a go of this. I expect that there will be a continued migration here.

I'm sort of horrified, to tell you the truth, but I have a feeling they'll grow on me. But I'm sorry, that rock n roll banana is not riding a llama. Who ever heard of a green llama? Clearly, it's Nessie.

love you Becca!

Wait ... all those emojis and no kissy face?? We've been robbed.

Thanks Mark, love you too!   :azn:

Not to hijack this for a real discussion, but I actually do need emoticons usually to help me figure out how to take something someone said. :D I think that's why I overuse them myself. I just can't help but assign voices to words and what I hear in my head doesn't always match how someone meant for me to hear what they said. :) I have to do a lot of edits to my posts to eliminate excess emoticons most of the time. In fact, big confession, but I have to actually watch myself to keep from putting them in my fiction when I'm writing. It's totally weird. But I'll write something that makes me smile and boom, there's the smiley staring back at me at the end of the sentence. :o

Emoji are super-useful, definitely. I think they're here to stay. But here's a question for you: are they marks of punctuation, or are they words?

Continuing the thread derail... with emojis

Punctuation.

Also, I'm not terribly fond of them, but it was really weird here when they broke. And you could see the missing emojis. Happy to see them back.

Lastly, I really really wish I had the old newsgroup list of all the text emojis and their meanings that circulated somewhere between 1984 and 1986... It was cool to read at the time. And I've always wondered how many of them lasted. I can't remember how long the list was, but over 20, at least. Probably 30-50.

Hey, Becs.  I saw you registered earlier, but I wasn't sure if you'd post or not.  Glad to see you did.

I'm the same way.  I used to hate them as much as Mark does.  I thought they were childish and silly.  Then I started to realize that an awful lot of the arguments I saw on the internet were the result of people misinterpreting "tone."  Those arguments might have been avoided by the use of emoticons.  I didn't want to contribute to that sort of miscommunication if I could help it, so I started using emoticons on a regular basis.

My god, Timothy, the emojis ...

They're beautiful, aren't they?  You can never have enough.   :band:

are they marks of punctuation, or are they words?

I'd say they are textual units equal to sentences.
Let's say, this one  means "I love you", a stand-alone sentence.

"I love you?" I think not. More like, "I consume your life force to sustain myself." I mean, just look at that poor dedicated corpse. But then again, when far are involved...

The new TOS didn't worry me, but Helena's unprofessionalism led me to do some more research on VerticalScope, so now I'm here.

Migrating over here with the same avatar but a slightly different name - I was a newbie and lurker before so I doubt anyone knows me. Hoping to be more active now!

Because my name was always anonymous, the TOS didn't stress me out too much, but the lack of professionalism shown towards the community by new admins was too much.

Hey folks. I am glad to join the roll call here. Same username (it's real, as far as that goes), and avatar (that's me at work, having just shut my laptop as a courtesy to the photographer).

I'm still amazed at what all happened at The Other Place. I wonder if they'll send the good cop (better CS or BS) next, or the bad cop (lawyers).

Present, and accounted for.

Using my donkey's name here, and maybe as a new pen name, too.

He doesn't mind, as long as he gets his royalties in apples, carrots, and sugar cubes.

Looking forward to this forum growing and becoming a great community for writers and publishing, in general.

Reporting for duty. Same name, different avatar - figured I'd give you all a break from my ugly mug.

I was one of those waiting to see what would happen over on kboards - then Helena happened. Although I haven't requested that my account there be deleted, I'm not keen on being overly active on a forum where the owner's response to a valid concern is 'so sue me'.

Nice to see so many familar names - hope many more join and this becomes the kboards that once was.
