Space flight was made to look like an absolute misery – and maybe it was – a cross between being stuck inside a washing machine on the spin-cycle and in a vacuum cleaner.

Imagine driving in a mini-van for a week with two other guys and having to wash with wet towels, pee out the window, and poop in ziploc bags that you store in a box in the back until you get home. And only being able to go outside for one day half-way through the trip... while wearing SCUBA gear.

Pretty much did that in my student years! Minus the scuba gear. Toured Europe living and sleeping in a small car. Seemed like fun at the time. I've a nasty idea we didn't smell too lovely by the end of the trip.

But, yes, you are quite right, being in the those craft must have been pretty rough. Apart from anything else, you couldn't open a window or pop out for a breath of fresh air.

Not something for anyone who gets a bit claustrophobic.

I'd really love to talk about this one in more depth, but pretty much every analysis ends up being a spoiler. Suffice to say, there's a lot of story going on here; the main theme being one of empowerment and identity. So, let's see here...socially relevant, a positive message (obliterating tired cliches and tropes left right and center), amazing visuals, as dark as a PG-13 rating allows, which turns out to be pretty dark...and super entertaining!

My only knock...which is kind of a big one, (it's by no means a perfect movie), is that Cameron is way way way better at filming emotion than Rodriguez. Well, two knocks. The movie needed to be at least 30 minutes longer. It felt a smidgen rushed. With that said...

It may also be that Cameron has the stronger influence (both professional and personal) to push actors to their emotional limits. From reading the interviews, it seems like some of the actors came away from The Abyss with a deep hatred for the way they were treated.

I saw Captain Marvel. It had its humorous moments, and most of the fight scenes were blessedly shorter than the interminable ones in Avengers and Guardians, and...all the rest. I'm eager to see Captain Marvel punch out Thanos in about a second. He's totally boring.

We saw Captain Marvel on Sunday. Enjoyed it a great deal, thought I thought she was too quick to just share information and interact with the locals (particularly in light of the earlier scene where they make a point saying not to interact with the locals during the initial mission). And there were a couple of points I would have liked to have seen fleshed out a little bit (mostly how certain people got to certain places as quickly as they did without attracting attention).

The tribute to Stan Lee made me cry a little. Ain't gonna lie.

Last night, I watched "The Predator 2018."

Background: I've seen all the Predator movies as they've come out through the years. Naturally, they've varied in quality. Though I enjoyed this current one, I can only give it three stars out of five. I like movies that tie everything up at the end--and this one definitely did not.

Given I have the flu, I'm not able to sit at my desk for a long period of time and write, hence I'm watching more movies and TV than usual.

Last night I watched Kill Command. IMO, an excellent movie. I streamed it from Netflix, and I give it 3.5 (possibly 4) stars out of five.

Watched Time Barbarians, because... uh... it was a recommendation on the streaming app and looked bizarre enough that it might be entertaiing.

It was about as bad as the title would suggest.

It's pretty sad when you can tell how bad a movie is going to be just by its title.

We recently watched Castles in the Sky on Amazon Prime. 5-stars for us. Story of Robert Watson-Watt and his team in the mid to late 1930s who developed RADAR for Britain's air defense. Funny, maddening, brilliant.

Saw Unplanned. Very well made. I'd read the book a few years ago and they did a good job of staying true to the story. I don't often cry watching movies, but I was bawling at the end.

Trapped in an inescapable family setting, I was recently coerced into watching Hacksaw Ridge. The movie is war-porn from start to finish. I kept my eyes closed most of the time. When considering the torture-porn in Passion of the Christ, it seems to me that Mel Gibson is f*cked up and that the fetish for violence among his fans is an indication that they need psychoanalysis.

Based on Ted Chiang's short story: Story of Your Life

And, based on the first book of Jeff VanderMeer's trilogy: The Southern Reach

Kids and I watched it yesterday. Didn't feel like over three hours. It was good, but not the most amazing movie in the world, imho. 12 year old said he enjoyed it but preferred Infinity Wars.

Our wee local, family-run cinema had a very long queue for tickets. Had never seen a queue there before. I think every seat in the screen room was filled.

Watched Aquaman yesterday.

The movie started out nicely, but then it became real corny for a very long while--too long. I almost gave up on the movie at that point. However, I stuck with it, and the movie eventually became interesting again.

IMO, the movie deserves 2.5 to 3 stars out of 5.

We watched "Whiskey Tango Foxtrot".  It wasn't a comedy like we expected, but there were some very funny lines.  We thought it was very good, YMMV, etc.  Mostly I'm posting because my husband did some research and found out that it became a movie because the author was interviewed about the book and mentioned that she would want Tina Fey to play her part in the movie.  Tina Fey heard about it and yada, yada, yada (Sorry Julia Louis Dreyfus there) it became a movie.

I would love for Emily Blunt and Rose Byrne to play Lauri and Alex in the movie based on my book.  Do you have any actors in mind for your characters?

Edit:  I almost forgot.  Meryl Streep for Lauri's mom.  That would be a small part, but gawd I love her.

I also watched Avengers Endgame, but I walked away a little disappointed. There were quite a few moments that took me out of the story, engaged my analytical brain. I have mixed feelings because some of the things that didn't make sense I liked on an emotional level. Like
Spoiler: ShowHide
Captain America going back in time to stay with Peggy. So. Damn. Emotionally. Satisfying. However, him being there as an old man in their timeline after that decision didn't mesh with the rules of time travel they set up/split timelines.
There's probably plot holes in everything if you look hard enough, but I usually don't notice them while watching. Therefore, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is my favorite super hero movie this year. I know it came out in theaters last December but I didn't see it until the Blu-ray in March.

I've watched only a few of the MCU movies. If the Wiki-pedia summary is engaging, then I'll consider watching the movie. Those Wiki-pedia summaries are brutally dry. I checked out as soon as I saw this for Endgame:

Spoiler: ShowHide
Time travel. That means all bets are off and nothing that I am watching is likely to be real. Everything can be undone, so there is never any real loss. Nothing is at stake. f*ck that. It's like having the ads say there's a big twist at the end. Really? Then why should I invest any emotion at all in the story if you are going to change all the rules of the story?

Why does Wiki-pedia get turned into Wikipedia without the hyphen?

Went and saw this yesterday.

It was everything I think I hoped for and expected. It was sad to see some of the characters die, but it brought the whole story line to a gratifying conclusion. I was happy to see Captain Marvel get so little screen time. She didn't earn much of a place in the story over the last eleven years and it was good to see the story center mostly around the characters we've watched for the last decade.

All in all, I give it a ten. I walked out of the theater sad for the deaths, but satisfied with the outcome.

I love Mel Gibson movies. I think his themes are in sync/harmony with Renee Girard’s theories on scapegoating and revelation. I think both men get close to the heart of the human condition; anthropologically (real word?).

As far as a good movie that I just watched, I was pleasantly surprised by Hell or Highwater on Netflix. Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine, Ben Foster and Gil Birmingham all played excellent roles in the movie.
