Post your Editing In Progress (EIP) status here!
« on: October 22, 2018, 06:13:04 PM »
Whether you edit as you go, or, edit after finishing the first draft, or, re-publishing your manuscript, this thread is for you.

Even if you are hiring at editor, you still may need to do some self-editing before you send your manuscript.

So, whether you are self-editing entirely or getting it done professionally, for the sake of publishing or re-publishing, logging your EIP status here will bring more focus to your WIP.

The format is:

EIP: X.Y.Z

Where X is the pass number, Y is the chapter number, and Z is the page number.

For example: 3.12.150 would mean that you are doing the third edit pass, and you need to begin editing  from chapter 12, page 150, when you start your next Writing Editing Publishing (WEP) session.

If you edit as you go, that is, even before you get the first pass done, you need to mark the pass number as zero. Sometimes, if we are not in a mood to write, we can at least spend that time on editing. So, you have been "at it" after all. And that is much better than idling out. Moreover, things get easier once the first draft gets done.

Edit:

If you got prologue and epilogue in your story, use P and E respectively, in place of chapters.

Examples:

2.P.75

2.E.623

If you are dividing the chapters into parts, the format would be: X.Y1.Y2.Z,  where X denotes pass number, Y1 the part number, Y2 the chapter number, and Z the page number.

Example:

2.5.115.1126 would mean you need to resume your second pass editing from part 5, chapter 115, page 1126, for your next WEP session.

Notes:

If you once again re-edit from scratch or from an earlier page, during an unfinished pass, your score doesn't change. It also ensures that you don't waste too much time on over-editing.

If you are reverse editing, it doesn't change pass number, only that the chapter number and page number keeps decreasing in the log.

If you are "Chaos Editing", that is, jumping around chapters in random fashion, for sake of gestalt therapy or due to sudden world insights, there is nothing to worry as the edit log knows how you have bounced around inside the manuscript. It keeps you on track. Thus there won't be any redundancy. This is also useful if you are using Writing softwares that allow you to pull chapters in any fashion from the dashboard.

Edit to add:

Format for tracking multiple WIPs:

X1.Y1.Z1 || X2. Y2. Z2 || X3. Y3. Z3

... and so on.

As you can see, I have used '||' symbol to indicate parallel processing of multiple book projects.

Format for reverse editing is:
EIP: << X. Y. Z

Format for pre-order:

EIP: X.Y.Z @ Pre-Order

I'll join in. :-)

Week 1: 2883 words
I started on Thursday, which is why the edited word count is low. Also, my editing process is rather slow, since I edit by writing the first draft of the manuscript in longhand into journals... which takes forever.
Then again, once it's done, it's done and I really enjoy it.
I only do one full round of editing, although to be fair I tend to tinker with the first draft as I write, so it's already quite clean when I start the “real” editing.

EIP: 1.1.8

Happy editing, everyone! :-)

Week 2: 11,159 edited words of my new Gothic novel ‘Dark Secrets at Hawthorn Hill’, which is above the 10,000 words that I had set for my goal. (I love it when that happens.)

Total edited word count: 14,042.
Since I’m aiming towards ~70,000 I am almost 20% there already! Huzzah!

EIP: 1.5.37

Enjoy your weekend! :-)

Your methods are far too scientific for me! But good luck with them. (I don't even have chapter breaks for sure until the last pass.)

I added an entire chapter, a waterboarding scene, during the third pass for my previous novel.

My research revealed that nobody  knows how the waterboarding was actually done!

Fun, you know! Both learning new things and improving the manuscript.

I got a question: What happens when you realize that you can add, say 5000 words, after receiving back the manuscript from the editor?

I finished editing my new book! Yay!!!

38 days of editing and 65,181 words later: I'm done.
Everything has been entered into three journals (New romantics journals by Paperblanks in burgundy, which is absolutely gorgeous).

The only thing left is to make a cup of tea and do a final readthrough before I'll send it off to my proofreader.
(Who will find all the dreadful mistakes that I've done, haha.)

You discover new challenges. Writing gets easier in the macro sense but is filled with new awarenesses in the micro sense. What you might have been satisfied with in the past is no longer good enough for you, so the struggle continues. That is, unless you achieve a competence level that fully satisfies you and you only write each new book for story content. I'll have to ask someone who has written 40 or 50 books if they feel completely satisfied with how they write.

As for the other ingredients, editing has a long history of standards, so it's just a question of making sure it happens competently. Publishing is easy; just choose your DIY comfort level if you're self-publishing. Marketing is a new game every day.

In the larger sense, yes, it does get easier, because once you realize that you can put out a book and God will not strike you dead for your temerity, you relax.

Welcome to Writersanctum where fine people look closely at the fine print.

I used to set up my pre-orders upon the completion of the first pass. I have been doing this since 2016 using this EIP thread method. And I used to display the EIP status on the pre-order page. I usually publish the book at the end of the third pass. By that time a lot of issues in the story would get sorted out.

Now, as for myself, life got into the way in a big way just when I was looking good towards Feb end. Now, my total idle days have shot past 100.

Now, I want to re-read all that I have written whenever I restart my WIP. I'm completely out of sorts with my WIP. This, however, doesn't change the EIP status, no matter how many times I re-read and even tweak a few things,

So...

EIP: 0.3.8.288

Giving this WIP a break and working on a book of poems. I know it won't sell but right now I'm in the mood to publish poetry. You can read the first drafts in Scrapes thread in the Games section. So far, 2 poems written.

Hmm...I still can't use your method because I don't number my chapters until the story is just about out the door, and move chapters around, and then I divide up scenes into chapters for maximum drama after the fact.

So currently I might be on 1.?.225. I do think it's a good idea to know where one left off--if one starts up again promptly and is still in the flow. Otherwise, it's back to the beginning for me.

1.?. 225 is the correct format for your style!

Thanks!

Actually, Word tells you where you left off when you open the manuscript next time by displaying a small rectangular bubble on bottom right of the screen. Click that and you will go to the page where you previously left.
