Good luck to this idea!  I use this self-certification for the fun of it on my space opera:  "Guaranteed written & produced by an actual organic free-range human being, not a robot or AI or other devilish mechanical."  But "NO-OI" is neater.

Has anyone started using Amazon.co.za yet? Not sure how it affects us as sellers. My paperbacks all say 'currently not available'. Can't find Kindle books  :icon_rolleyes:

Sorry if I'm repeating something posted elsewhere, but this article was in the International Express. Perhaps Amazon will also provide a stamp, but I can't see how they can police it

I remember we had to read The Catcher in the Rye and I still believe that is one of the most overrated books of all time.  I mean, were we supposed to identify with the protagonist because he was a teenager?  I didn't.  I just longed for him to get hit by a bus so the book would be over.

You and I share a brain when it comes to this book.   :cheers

The only time I was ever really into it was when it looked like the elevator pimp was going to beat Holden to a pulp.  That would have been a great way to begin the upward phase of the character's Harmon Circle: have him wake up in the hospital, reevaluate his life in something like a "Come to Jesus" moment, and then set himself to making amends and developing virtues and whatnot.

(For those who aren't familiar with the Harmon Circle, I'm referring to Step 5.)

Agreed, it is aggressively overrated. As are many other “must read” or “mandatory reading” assignments. I don’t want to start a fight, so I’ll keep my “that was not good” list to myself.

I'm late to the discussion and I did not read the whole article. But I still feel a need to vent my opinion:) Literacy in America has been declining for a good long time, in part from the reasons mentioned earlier.

But do the experts have memories? The 8 and 9-year-olds of today were 4 and 5 during the pandemic. Many of them were not getting serious school instruction and then got tossed back into school with over-worked teachers and bunch of other kids who were behind. It may be that a significant number are just behind on reading and can't read middle-grade books yet.

Marketing Loft [Public] / Re: Apple's selling two versions of my audiobook

Just an update. Every time I publish an audiobook on Findaway, Audible releases a duplicate product on Apple. So, as I mentioned above, if you publish through Findaway, check your apple products and request Apple to delete the Audible duplicate. If you don't, you'll have two versions of your books show up. Not sure if this applies to Author's Republic? Hopefully, Findaway will eventually clear up this error.
Findaway's instructions to clear it: contact Apple Books:
"I am reaching out due to three of my titles being duplicated on Apple Books, as in, two products available for a singular audio title. Findaway has advised that I contact you directly. The duplicate that needs to be hidden is Audible as I’m selling direct.

The link to the version to be HIDDEN is here:

What are Amazon doing now? [Public] / Re: Amazon launches in South Africa

It's exciting that Amazon's delving into another market. Thanks for letting us know.

I am concerned about what it means to selling on Amazon.co.za.  :icon_rolleyes:

Give them time to get it going.

The lack of Amazon products may simply be someone goofed on the delivery of them to whatever warehouse is being used there. Could be stuck on a ship and delayed for some reason. Amazon would never admit something like that.

They haven't had time to process any orders yet. :icon_rolleyes:

But many South Africans who have been eagerly awaiting the megaretailer’s launch will be disappointed to learn that none of the Amazon-specific products and services that accompany its retail operations in other markets is available locally.

There are no listings for the Kindle e-reader, Fire TV smart TV device, Ring video doorbell or Alexa voice assistant-capable Amazon smart speakers. Ironically, a quick search on South African e-commerce site takealot.com, which is seen as Amazon’s most formidable rival in South Africa, shows multiple listings of Amazon products including the Echo Dot smart speakers as well as an assortment of Fire TV sticks, Fire tablets and more.

None of Amazon’s digital services is available either, including Amazon Music or the much-anticipated Amazon Prime, which bundles its e-commerce offering and various digital services into a single subscription plan. Only Amazon Prime Video is available to South African consumers, though that was launched here years ago.

A like-for-like comparison shows that Amazon’s South African offering is similar to Takealot’s. But the large number of listed products on amazon.co.za labelled as out of stock – this includes most smartphones including the Samsung Galaxy S24 range and the iPhone 15 range, for example – suggests that Takealot leads, for now, in terms of its product offering.

Nothing about Amazon’s offering screams Amazon, especially given its own products are not available.
