Marketing Loft [Public] / Ad pricing has become prohibitive
« Last post by Jan Hurst-Nicholson on January 08, 2025, 05:50:03 AM »
I have just checked the BookBub pricing for a Romance - IF you get a featured deal.
It is $560 .
The exchange rate means it would cost me R10 600 :icon_sad:. I have just bought a new Samsung Smart 43" TV for R4500.
An International deal is approx R2000 (no US readers).

Their paid ads with bidding etc. is just too complicated for my brain.  :icon_rolleyes:

eBookDaily is $20 Obviously not as good as BookBub, but at least affordable.

This is late but I'd say the ads aren't that comparable.

The first ad probably gets more clicks because it's easier to read the tag line and has a really nice contrast. (The tag line isn't in italics and the words are larger on the background.)

The other two don't have that going for them.

I like the last one best for the words, but the first one is more visually appealing to me.

If there were no italics on the third one, it might be more appealing. But the library feel of the first is pretty nice, so maybe not. :)

Thanks.
I was trying to figure out if different taglines would appeal to different genre readers.
I was concerned about categorising it romance as it has a non-traditional romance arc - BUT on going through my files I came across the Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award finalists for 2014 and "Headmaster' was a quarter-finalist in the romance category and had some good reviews from the Vine reviewers. How could I have forgotten  :icon_redface:

Marketing Loft [Public] / Re: Interesting bit of marketing trivia

I suspect a lot of large publishers do this with A list authors. I have to admit that, if I were in that situation, I'd be fine as long as the publisher wasn't doing weird stuff.

Some people really like social media. Others don't. For authors who don't, having someone else handle social media could easily sound like heaven.

However, the reality of modern publishing is that a lot of publishers are cutting back on those kinds of services. Authors are often expected to do more of their own promotion than they were in the past.

In any case, the key principle in selling is honesty. Once you know how to fake that, you've got it made - Richard M. Huber, The American Idea of Success (1971)

Marketing Loft [Public] / Interesting bit of marketing trivia
« Last post by The Bass Bagwhan on January 07, 2025, 10:39:08 AM »
One of my favourite authors, Stuart MacBride, has recently posted on his Facebook page that he never, ever posts on his page, in fact he can't even start a page of his own (because FB thinks he's impersonating himself and blocks it) and all the posts are created by his publisher's marketing team.
And that he's always very uncomfortable with that team pretending to be him, and has asked that they stop.
Plenty of high-profile authors have marketing people handling their social media, but you'd always expect "personal" posts to be penned by the actual author. Interesting to contemplate how prevalent this practise might be.

Promotion Signup Desk [Public] / KoboPlus Sci-fi/Fantasy Promo - February 2025
« Last post by C. Gockel on January 07, 2025, 07:33:20 AM »
KOBO PLUS Sale @ Bookfunnel
Sci-fi, Fantasy, & Paranormal
Feb 1 - Feb 28

This is for all subgenres of sci-fi, fantasy, and paranormal except erotica that are in KOBO PLUS. No nekkid' man chests for this one. Permafree books are fine as long as follow up books are in KoboPlus. All mailing list sizes are great, but only authors with 50+ clicks per promo may have more than THREE ebooks.

I think I should do some deleting  :icon_rolleyes:

NO. NO. NO.

You create a separate folder below your main one, and you move all the older versions into it.

The top folder always has the current version, but the sub-folder has everything else in case you even need to go there for something.

Never delete anything.

Good idea  :tup3b I will do that  :)

Remember to backup both of them after every time you change something.

I've created a new folder and will keep the latest versions in one folder, but still keep them in the old one as well  Grin I have a backup external hard drive.
