I just posted some photos of fall foliage.

Goodness gracious, those are gorgeous photos! You certainly have an eye for photography. Autumn is so beautiful. As a lover of locomotives as well, I appreciated the picture of the train.  Grin

I posted on my blog today releasing two new things for readers: official artwork from my fantasy series, and the excerpt for the upcoming sixth and final book of the series. It was a pretty substantial update. I always love releasing art because it makes the site so beautiful and colorful (and it's just exciting seeing my characters come to life!).

Fantasy/sci-fi. Writer of bloody warfare & witty banter. Provoker of questions.

Glad you liked my photos, Rosie. The weather and foliage was really gorgeous this weekend.

The train was a regular regional commuter train, though the different types of waggons and locomotives are interesting. There is a vintage steam train operating in my area, which is very cool, when you catch it.

Congratulations Cora! It's neat how these came from writing prompts. I think I am unable to write any story without some food in it. lol.

Mark, a lot of people don't interact but they still read so if you enjoy it, why not? Sometimes I feel if I don't blog my head might explode so I do. Still enjoying it after 10 yrs.

I toss up a blog post every few days, but most of them aren't things I think anyone here would be particularly interested in.

My last post was just an embedded video from the YouTube channel "The Great War."  Never forget the horror show that was WWI.   :icon_cry:

My first foray into the world of audiobooks came to fruition this week with publication of the audio version of The Cleansing. An opportune time, then, to blog about the process that went into producing it.

My just released perpetual calendar (paperback) that was a loooong time coming.
Partly due to not fully trusting the new KDP print, sorry KDP, it was a lot easier & quicker than I thought it would be.
Partly due to it being 400 pages & 365 of those pages having an original (by me) quatrain.
(A mammoth task that took longer than I thought it would but I still reached by self-imposed deadline for completion).

Congratulations on "winning" Nanowrimo, dgcasey. I like the spreadsheet you use. I use to use Scrivener to keep on top of my daily wordcount but it's installed on my laptop where I rarely do my writing (it's usually on my phone or tablet).

Apart from blogging about the Cheap Quickies promo, I've also just put up Chapter 2 of my sweary scottish vampire story in a blog post.

Apologies - only now noticed this. In my opinion, the book was (as usual) a great deal better than both movie versions I've seen. Like I say in the blog post, the ending of the book is deliciously dark and I wish the film makers had been faithful to the book.

As for World War Z, I don't think they made a terrible attempt with the movie but, again, the book for me is far superior. As an aside, one of the more interesting parts of the movie is when the plane is coming in to try to land at Cardiff Airport. That's about twenty minutes up the road from my house and it's not often I see it mentioned in a major movie. In fact, I can't think of another one.

Wishing you a happy and healthier 2019, DM Guay.

I forgot about this thread, but I have been blogging.  You can find some Christmas (one pic may not be quite safe for work) and New Year's Eve photos and I also waded into the hopepunk debate.

I also have a review of Ordeal in Otherwhere by Andre Norton and the recipe for spaceman's punch, a vintage 1960s party drink, at Galactic Journey, a retro science fiction blog I sometimes contribute to.

Finally, I also have a poem called "The Mystery of the Compost Heap" out in the poetry and photography zine Umbel & Panicle today.

Just got another author interview up on my blog. I like to focus on Indie authors, but I also interview small and mid press authors too. I'm doing the occational book review too, but the author interviews seem to be more popular.
Love giving back to the Indie community and it gets content on my blog too.

Couldn't stand Insomnia - I thought as I read it that my favourite author had taken one drug too many. The Green Mile upset me so much I stopped reading Stephen King books for a long time.

I used to preorder everything he wrote, but couldn't get into some of his later ones. I think that's me, though; my tastes changing, crumbling probably along with my bones.

It's good that our tastes differ so much - what a boring world it would be otherwise. And our tastes definitely change as we grow older. I used to get excited around November each year when he was due to release a new novel, but haven't felt that way for years.

Another interesting read. I don't think my reaction to the film was down to being male - my younger daughter watched it with me and didn't like it, either. We both thought it was a mish-mash that didn't work for us.

I enjoyed Jupiter Ascending for the audacity of the scope and ideas. Where they lost me was in the third act with all the busy-work saving her family. It could have been just one favorite at risk. Then the owner of the galaxy goes back to cleaning toilets? Not happening, suspension of disbelief broken.

You know, this was such cool research, I have to share. I participated in a paranormal investigation at the Queen Mary last weekend with Nick Groff from Paranormal Lockdown. I just wrote up a blog post about the experience. Best research I've done for a novel so far. It was for my supernatural romance which involves a TV show paranormal investigator and a skeptic tour guide at the place he is investigating. So, got some first hand experience investigating and even witnessed a seance in the most haunted room on the ship: B340.

Here is the link to the blog post:
https://marilynvix.com/2019/02/08/i-went-on-a-paranormal-investigation-to-research-my-new-novel-my-experience-on-nick-groffs-tour-on-the-queen-mary/

Like I said, some of the best research ever. Had way too much fun. -Tiff/Marilyn Vix

Aw, thanks. I love these little turtles. I'm always rescuing them too... Jeff, I couldn't figure out how to post the picture on the "smile thread." I know I'm supposed to use the [img][img] button but when I click on the picture to copy and paste, nothing shows up.

I upload a pic to imgur first.  Then I use the link they give me for BBS/forums.  But I think a photo has to be hosted somewhere off-site before you can post it here using the img tags.  I think.   :icon_think:

You don't have to make an account at Imgur.  I don't have an account there.  I just click the "new post" button and upload a pic.  Then I hover the cursor over the upper-right corner of the pic to get the link list to show up.  Then I copy the BBS/forum link and use it here.

Once you do it a few times, you get in the habit, and then it goes pretty fast.

Finishing a photo gallery for my Sgt. Dunn series on my website. A few years ago I created one on Pinterest for six books. It looks fine, but Pinterest is much harder to work with than my website. I put books 7 - 11 on my website and it was so much easier to manage.

That's kind of funny about the singer being nervous because "the lyricist" was there.  I can imagine how Mike must have felt when he heard her say that.

How publishers should navigate the Amazon terms of service (TOS):

First thing to understand about the Amazon TOS: There are actually several terms of services. Each program has its own terms, and sometimes the Amazon TOSes aren’t in sync.

I neglected my blog for much of April but this month has seen two posts highlighting my April Reading.

I keep forgetting to post to this thread, though I blog quite frequently.

Anyway, today I posted a free Steampunk story called "Tea and Treachery" as part of my First Monday Free Fiction experiment. So far (it's the third month I'm doing this) the experiment has been successful, because sales for the stories I post for free actually increased and last month I even had people buy the whole series to which the free story belongs.

Other recent posts include a rebuttal to someone proclaiming Steampunk dead and a post about the joy of writing, how to lose it and how to get it back.

I keep forgetting to post in this thread, but I have been blogging quite a bit of late.

For example, I have continued my loose series of posts about the golden age of science fiction and how it was more diverse and less monolithic than many people think.

I also wrote two posts about the ending of Game of Thrones.

Today, I posted "Lovers' Lane", this month's free short story on my blog. I got the idea from Kristine Kathryn Rusch who posts a new free short story on her blog every week, then she takes it down and posts the next one.

I don't have as many stories as Kristine Kathryn Rusch, so I post one a month. And yes, these free stories sell books. I've had people buy the story in question and sometimes an entire series.

There have been several changes. For a while, Scribd kicked all romance titles out of its catalogue, because romance readers read too much. Then, they started allowing subscribers to borrow only certain books from the author's catalogue. And of course, you could never borrow a whole series at the same time.

My Scribd sales collapsed in late summer 2018, so I suspect they made another change then.

Before there was a Red Wedding

I remember that!

I also remember walking out of the theater dazed and gutted. I never watched The Transformers after that. I wasn't interested.

I enjoyed your interview. Laughing over the genetic engineering--former microbiologist/biochemist here--if you knew what goes on in the lab, you wouldn't want anybody messing with your DNA. But it's great for SF.

I blogged about my kids going off to college down to FL...and Dorian on its way there. https://vijayabodach.blogspot.com/2019/08/and-off-they-go.html
Gosh, it feels like deja vu.

And at my Retro Science Fiction Reviews site, I review the 1944 short story "The Lake" by Ray Bradbury.

Jeff, good try. I think the re-iterative approach is the best. As I tell my kids, you have to check the assumptions even with that approach because it can make the difference between 20,000 deaths vs 1 million.

Glad you had a nice time with your friends, Sam, and glad you made it back safely.

Hard to believe, though, that there's not a single bridge between Britain and Ireland.  That convoluted flight should have been a four-hour drive.

It's cool you got to see Bram Stoker's house.

The only other cheap option is the ferry, but it can be a little rough crossing the Irish Sea in good weather - Storm Ciara ensured all ferry crossings home were cancelled, together with quite a few flights, so we were lucky to get home when we did. A bridge, though, would be darned handy...

I'm a short story and magazine writer. Well, I finally collected a bunch of EZ stories and compiled them into a little book. Best of all, my daughter made the line art for it. So, so fun to work together. I'd also entered a writing contest about the pandemic and although we didn't win, we are happy with the book, so released it ourselves (sans Amazon). I wrote about both these short books here: https://vijayabodach.blogspot.com/2020/05/my-short-books-for-kids.html

Soon, I'll add the pictures to my signature. But the glamorous life of a writer includes taking dog out for a walk, cleaning the cat box, hanging out the laundry. So later...

It's always interesting to catch a glimpse into someone else's outlining technique.   :cheers

That way--with the Roman numerals and hierarchical format--is the way I was taught in high school.  And I absolutely hated it.  I still do, frankly.  It simply never worked for me, and so I was anti-outlining for a long time.  Eventually, I came up with my own method--a more organic, haphazard one--that works for me, and now I'm a firm believer in outlining.

In my opinion, there's no wrong way to outline.  There's only "this method works for me" and "this method doesn't work for me."  It's up to us to experiment and find the way that works for each of us.

I agree Jeff. Lots of people freeze up at the hyper-organized outline. I tend to do more of a narrative outline for my stories--this happened, then that, etc. But I need a roadmap. Still there's lots of room to write into the dark, a al Dean Wesley Smith.

Sometimes, musicians who make it big often get swelled heads as a result.  They become arrogant and obnoxious, especially towards other musicians.  We all have examples in mind, I'm sure.

That's why it's nice to find examples to the contrary.  Here's one:

The Bell X-1 was basically a rocket with wings.  The hatch was on the side, right in front of the wing.  Bailing out and surviving would have been a tricky proposition for a completely healthy man, let alone one with broken ribs.  (Yeager had broken his ribs a few days earlier in a horseback-riding incident.)  That thing was a suicide machine.

Here's an interesting article about the aircraft.

During WWII, Yeager was shot down over France and taken in by the French Resistance.

He made ace in a single day.

Yeager had 20/10 vision.  This gave him an edge in dogfighting.  He could see the enemy before they saw him.

The engineers loved Yeager as a test pilot.  He had a real knack for explaining exactly what an airplane was doing, and the engineers were able to make the correct modifications as a result.

He encountered the new German jet fighter, the Me-262, at one point during the war.  He later quipped, "The first time I saw a jet, I shot it down."

If you haven't read his autobiography, I highly recommend it.  Like I said in the blog post, it's so fantastic that, if it was fiction, readers would consider it utterly unrealistic.  The fact that it's not fiction is what makes it so fascinating and impressive.

Here's the "breaking the sound barrier" scene from the movie The Right Stuff.  I'm not ashamed to admit that I get a little teary-eyed at the part where the music kicks in.  It's just so dadgum triumphant.

Just the little trip from the airplane to the rocket would have made me crap my pants.

Clear skies here, so I got a good view.  I was a bit disappointed, though.  I figured it would be bigger and brighter and just more impressive all around.   :shrug

My eyesight isn't perfect, so I could only see a single white dot with the naked eye.  With the binoculars, both planets were clearly distinct.  Saturn was to the right of Jupiter and slightly higher.  And I thought I saw a Galilean moon or two, but that's hard to say.  Those things are tough to see.

Anyway, it's a neat event, and I'm glad I got to see it.  :)

Cloudy here, so didn't see it.  When the clouds began to break, I saw a light in what I thought was the right spot, but it moved.  And then there was another.  I think four lights.  Planes I imagine, though they seemed higher than the two or three commercial planes going in different directions.  Then I saw a line of three lights in a row, all going the same direction as the first four.  Through the clouds, I could see a few more.  I suspect there may have been more that I couldn't see because they were high up or their lights were dim and also there were still plenty of clouds.  I assume they were all planes but the thought did occur to me that, this being 2020 and all, an alien invasion would pretty much cap the whole year off.  I looked again a few minutes later and still saw more, all heading in the same direction.  A few minutes later, I went out again and counted about eighteen of the lights all going in the same direction.  I guessed there were probably two dozen or more, but it was hard to tell with the clouds moving in the opposite direction from the planes.  I'd guess I probably saw three dozen in all but I suspect there were many more because of the time I wasn't out looking.  It was like they kept coming and coming and coming.

The first interview with a character from one of my books - Jack from the Elevator trilogy. A word of warning for the easily offended: he was a bit of a troubled soul when the interview took place and, though he managed to avoid the worst four-letter words, his language was a little ripe. http://samkates.co.uk/2021/10/28/meet-jack-from-the-elevator/

This fall, I was so delighted when Grace Wynter, who does Authors Up Close series through which I've discovered several new-to-me writers, invited me. Of course, I said yes! And my interview is up today: https://writerunboxed.com/2021/12/02/author-up-close-vijaya-bodach-play-dream-believe/

It wasn't today, it was a couple of weeks ago, but I posted an article, hopefully humorous, as well as informative, about Anglo Saxon runes on my website.
I posted it for practical reasons, to create interest in my WIP, which is called 'Our Saxon Life.'
In reality it isn't a WIP, I've finished it, but haven't published it yet, and am writing book two, to create a series.
I suspect that I should have waited until I published it, before publishing a blog post about it, it would have had more immediacy.

Awesome.   :littleclap

A word of advice:  If she really gets into the classic SF of decades past, then it's only a matter of time before she gets around to Alfred Bester.  When that happens, if she decides to read The Demolished Man, it's important that she read a print version of it.  The digital version simply won't do.  The reason for this is that Bester used all kinds of weird font tricks in the book as subtle messages and symbolism, and the digital version doesn't accurately reproduce it.

I blogged about it a few years ago:

Well, that was a week and a half
