Does anyone here use Joomla?
« on: September 21, 2018, 12:35:25 AM »
I've been building websites on and off, (mostly off in the last couple of years).

I specialise in Joomla installations and just wondered if there are other Joomla people in here.

You can add a services thread for this in Other Services area.

I classify this as a service to authors, but also how an author makes a buck on the side to support writing.
Genres: Space Opera/Fantasy/Cyberpunk, with elements of LitRPG and GameLit, with a touch of the Supernatural. Also Spiritual and Games.

Actually, Timothy, I wasn't touting for business. I was interested in knowing if there were other Joomla experts in here because I wanted to bounce ideas around for my websites. Do move it though if you think it should be there.

I used Joomla for a few years for a site I was maintaining. But that was about 3-4 years ago.

Joomla is a medium weight CMS (Content Management System) and is/used to be the next step up from Wordpress which at that time was just a blogging tool, which it still is, but with so many apps to be added it can be a powerful website. Still, Joomla is strong and versatile with a ton of enhancements that make it into a powerful web machine. People like Tesco's have built their whole online presence around it. As to has it changed. Yes, It's still a lump to move around, but it seems to be more intuitive these days (we're on 3.8 and bet testing 4.0) and I've managed to keep up with its changes.

My own website is Joomla and it will work great as a Publisher site which I will also have soon for my Tobias Roote Books Ltd publishing company.

I used Joomla 2 and started looking at Joomla 3 before I stopped playing around with it.

The other thing is Joomla was a split off from Drupal (or maybe it was vice versa) long time ago. I currently support a site that uses Drupal, but I don't work on the backend admin side, just on the content. (I don't write the content, I just put it on the website properly.)
Genre: Science Fiction

I always found Drupal very laborious - it's a heavy-hitter CMS and Joomla sits between Drupal and Wordpress so it's a happy medium for me. I also think Joomla (for that reason) has a wider user/tech base than Drupal. Joomla evolved from Mambo and I still had a Mambo site there a while back. I'm not in the game any more so I have no idea what happened to it.

I maintain one Joomla site, but the decision to use Joomla was not mine. It's not terrible, but it is not the most intuitive builder either. Perhaps if I built a site from the ground up I would be happier to use it.

Had 3 websites in Joomla for about 5 years, then switched to WordPress and never looked back.

As a software engineer I found Joomla receptive to tweaks, but it got awkward after a while. I'm now comfortable in the WP chair for the three I maintain for other peeps. My PHP static site still hums along at 2,400 sessions/mo, although I have a WP version staged and ready to go. Just haven't bit the bullet because SEO, writing fiction, cleaning house, watching NFL, vital stuff like that.

I've used a variety of CMS over the years including Joomla and Drupal (and Mambo) - and others - but I've given them all up. AFAICS the market has gone with Wordpress (an inappropriate starting point, but there we are) and you always have more options in the future if you start from the most populated space. Fairly stunned to see the simple blog extended and distorted to become dominant, and it's not surprising to find it with so many vulnerabilities, but it's still the winner for now.
So there I am: Wordpress. I might use one of the others if I truly need to, but can't otherwise justify the extra time and money. Even if they are better.
