Title: The daily writing game continues
Post by: Lynn on September 20, 2018, 11:54:19 AM
I'm quoting myself from elsewhere, but this is a continuation of my friendly little competition post I called the daily writing game.

Quote
Ahhh. I'm admitting here that I tend to have to find motivation to work on my books from outside myself. I have no idea why, because I like writing. Well, I like having written more, but I like writing most of the time too, once I get started. I've been writing for so many years that you'd think I would have given it up by now if it's so hard to get myself to do it, but nope. I'm a glutton for punishment, obviously.

Anyway... does anyone want to get in on a little competition? It's simple. You're in the game if you write some fiction every day. Don't care how many words, don't care how good it is, or if you turn around and delete it right after. But to stay in the game/thread, you have to write some fiction every day. Not notes, not research, but actual real words on some piece of your fiction. Every. Single. Day. It's a competition after all. A game. It's also the honor system, because the honor system is cool. Once a month, say on the first, we'll start over and everyone gets another shot at taking the prize.

By the way, there is no prize, except for all those lovely words. :)

Who'll be the last poster posting? Who'll make it to the end? How long can this go on?

So, any takers?

These are my own words, but if someone has a problem with me posting my own words somewhere other than the place I first posted them, I'm claiming fair use! :D

I had some takers and we all started posting that we were writing daily and I'd like to see the game continue.

The thread over there will stay active for however long it stays active, but I'll probably stop posting there at the end of the month and concentrate my own updates here.

Has anyone still in the competition for this month migrated here? If not, it's going to be a lonely thread. :-)

Yay!!!!
I'm here was just going to post on the other boards that I'm sorry to leave and hope we can start over here. You made my day.

My writing today was not the best. I think I'm at -2 words. That seems wrong very very wrong.

There better be time. I'm still trying to get started! I'm wolfing down a sandwich so I can write for a couple hours before I conk out.

I was in the game, but in the mess over at KB I stopped posting in the thread there. I'll have to jump back in now that it's migrated here.

The more, the merrier.

I have found this little competition to be exactly what I needed to keep me from skipping days. I hope it's helping others, too. :) It seems to be.

Ok I went back and tried to write. Got 28 words than I decided I hated everything and the delete button was doing bad things to my mind. I'm going to stop before I end up deleting everything.

I'm rereading my current WIP (I procrastinated for so long that I forgot what actually happened in the 70.000 words I wrote before), but I'm in as soon as I get to the actual writing part  grint

I'll be in next month. I need to get myself back into the grove to write in order to actually get anywhere. But I should be good starting next month.

Also on a making your own mythos/history binge so that isn't helping my work count right now.

I'm in for another day! I'm not posting word counts because I've only been at it for about 15 minutes but I'm in.  :)

My streak actually started before the game started, and I'll have to axe some of those days for the game because they don't count, but I'm very excited that it's now 17 days long. Woohoo!

Oh, and I have a note about a prize someone is offering for a few winners so I'll try to get that written up and posted tomorrow sometime.

I really wanted at least a four-figure number for my first post in the thread here, but it was not to be. I seem to be stuck in a write-10-words, delete-6 mode. But at least I'm being lured to keep working at it.

I missed a day on Thursday - life stuff - but managed every day apart from that, and my total word count since this game started has gone up by around 14K words, which I'm pleased with.  (And that is even with me deleting several scenes that just didn't work.)

So this whole thing is working well for me.

There are 100 days until the end of the year. That's a good chunk of time to get something finished by the end of the year if I put words on the page every day.

I've written some stuff today, so I'm dropping in to say I've made it another day.

Okay, here's the prize update I said I had. *** Please read ***

I have an editor who has offered to do some editing for a set number of the winners (the people who write every day and make it to the end of the month)! I'm happy to pass on the information of the winners to the editor but there's a limit to the number of winners he'll take on, so... I'm thinking random draw or something. But I really don't want to deal with legal issues on this so I kind of need to know if this is something we can do before I commit.

Is this legal? Or is there a better way to deal with this? There could end up more winners than prize offerings for this little competition.

Also, I'm not good at this stuff, and that's 100% why I set this up with a big fat nothing as a prize. I, personally, am not putting myself in for any prizes other than bragging rights, assuming I make it all the way!

So, if everyone who is interested in winning an actual prize agrees on accepting this prize offer, and it's not illegal or anything, I need to be upfront that I will pass on names, and make a post, even add it to the first post of the month(s) it's on offer, but I'm not getting in the middle of any disputes that might arise from it, and I'm not taking on the responsibility to do anything other than pass on the info.

Okay? Got that? I'm know I'm sounding like a bit of a hardass about this, but I don't want there to be any misunderstandings. :D And I will not get into any conflict with anyone over this no matter how it turns out. Just won't do it.

So, how do you all want to handle this? *** Please respond *** Opinions are needed!

I admit that for me there has to be something more than bragging rights. A friend once said I'm the most competitive person she ever met, and while an exaggeration, there's truth to it. I was in the 1,000 words a day thread for a while and dropped out while still meeting the threshold. Posting a number there every day for what seemed to me no purpose just struck me as meaningless. I can keep a word count list on my own PC just fine.

All of which is to say to keep me going there has to be some kind of something to lure me into forcing out a few hundred words on nights I really don't want to. It's hard to believe there would be any kind of problem with it. We're not talking raffle or anything with a buy-in here. My original thought was for each of us to promise if we didn't make it to buy a book from someone who did, but that still means an end of month accounting and runs into problems with anon participants.

I want everyone who wants to be here to be here, but I'm just not willing to take on doling out prizes every month. :D If someone wants to take over that part and make it so that the people who want prizes can have them, I'm all for that. However, I will do the things I said I'd do in the post above, because the editor in question reached out to me about it.

But yeah, did not intend to set up a big, time consuming thing with this post, and really... don't plan to let it get there for me, because that? Will definitely run me off and stop me posting here! :D

The editing sounds great to me - generous. I was just saying as to the anything, something since you asked for opinions. I understand about the PITA factor of administering it. I might volunteer, but then I'd have to be noble and declare myself ineligible.

Do you have to start at the beginning of the month or how does it work?

Is it only for people that don't already write every day?

Not sure I'll be eligible.  I don't remember the last day I didn't write something.  I almost missed a couple days last week, but made it in just under the wire during the 11 p.m. hour.

At The Other Place, a few of us had noted that we weren't in it for the prize, but some like that as a motivation - everyone's different and it's cool - having this thread here is definitely keeping me coming back to the keyboard.

I'm certainly not in this for a prize (and I've missed a day, so not eligible anyway!).

Whenever there's a prize involved there's going to be admin in deciding who gets it.  The only suggestion I had was that at the end of the month, we have a list of those eligible (and wanting!) the prize and then to start with someone (either Lynn or someone else who's not in it for a prize) basically draws a name out of a hat and that's the winner.  If it was me, I'd write names on pieces of paper and draw randomly from a hat. Or bowl. Or vase. (You get the idea!)

And, although this might not be popular, perhaps the winner one month gets to do the draw for the winner the next month, and so on (although you can't choose yourself - so you can't win two months in a row). That way, Lynn doesn't get all the admin, having started this.

Fair? Transparent? Who knows, but it's a method.

What do you think?

ETA: Darn, I forgot - another 3,000 odd words added yesterday (some of them very odd) and about 1,600 so far today - Sunday lunchtime in the UK.  :icon_biggrin:

Organizing and leading are not the things I do best, tbh. I am generally a one-person show here. I go against the grain, don't listen to anybody, and do all my own editing, proofing, covers, tech stuff, etc. In other words, I do not work well with others, lol, although I do try to be friendly.  :grouphug:

So I'm going to post this now rather than wait until I have tonight's words to add:

Same here. I'm posting while I can, but I'm still writing. :) So far today 1000+ words. I think I finally posted about yesterday this morning when I could get in, so I believe I'm all caught up.

We're almost to the end of the month when other people can jump back in.

I'm happy to say that this has been working great for me, despite a few really pathetic days. I'm going to ride this thing until there's no road left.

Me too. It's pathetic how panicky I've felt about being unable to get to this thread last night and today. You'd think it held some kind of magic motivation elixir.

To support the game, Dennis Chekalov is offering a generous developmental editing prize for 4 winners for the first two months of the game! (That's 8 total winners over the first two months.)

Up to 3,000 words of the beginning of the manuscript (must be the beginning of the text, which really only makes sense anyway!).

He'll do basic developmental editing which will be about 350 words of comments for every 1,000 words of manuscript.

If you like what he does, posting a testimonial in his forum thread here is a nice way to show your appreciation but it's not required, of course.  Welcome, but not required. :D

Finally, Dennis says he works with all genres but specializes in mystery/thrillers and sci-fi/fantasy. So something to keep in mind.

Not every winner is going to need or want this kind of editing, so people who are interested will need to say so at the end
when identifying themselves as winners of the game, and IF there are more than 4 of you, I'll do a totally random drawing for the prize.

Seriously, it will be totally random and if any issues crop up, people complain, etc, the whole thing'll be scrapped. Just putting that on the table. I don't do mediation or conflict resolution for anyone except fictional characters and my own too-argumentative-for-their-own-good children. :D I have no idea where they got that trait. :o (Okay, maybe I do.) ;)

This is a very generous offer, though, so take advantage of it if you win and enjoy having someone do some developmental editing for you! :) 3000 words of a story can really get you started.

Just to reiterate, so there are no misunderstandings or unreasonable expectations, this is developmental editing NOT proofreading or line editing.

Here's his link on this forum in case you want to see what he usually charges for this and those of you needing the motivation of a prize can see the value: https://writersanctum.com/index.php?topic=150.msg1250#msg1250 .

Now, any questions, I suspect Dennis will be happy to answer them in PM, or if you want to post here, that's fine with me. I'll do my best to tell you what I know.

Thank you for supporting the daily writing game, Dennis!

I've managed to write each of the last few days but it has only been a dozen or so words each day (today's total is currently 3).

Eventually I'll get back into the groove :)

Today was probably the hardest day yet for me. I waited until super late to get started and have managed to write a paragraph, which I pretty much deleted afterward, but I wrote fiction. Now I'm logging out so I can go back to it and see if I can try again. Who knows where I'll end up, but I am in for today. Whew. That's 17 out of 17 days of the game for me, plus a few extra. :)

Just spat out 124 words.  My total is now - 17844 thru Day 20.  I may not add any additional words to that 124 today :(.  I am heading to Atlanta for a concert later, and I have a lot of family obligations before doing that. So another day with not so many words, but words nonetheless.

Sunday I wrote just under 500.

I can believe I wrote all those days in a row.

Yes, the end of the month it was. New people can come on board today for the next month. Anyone who goes into the next month can continue to accumulate days!

I made it to the end of the month. Didn't update because the last I checked, the board was down, and I was kind of busy yesterday, but I still wrote just over 500 words. :)

I ended with just about 10,000 words for the days of the game and over 13,000 for the month! My best month in a while, so it has done its job for me.

It's really great to see that it helped other people write more often too.  :banana-riding-llama-smiley-em

I hope everyone continues to enjoy the game and use it, but I'm stepping back from all forums for a while. I have a lot of writing to catch up and I'm kind of needing a break from the distractions that come with busy forums.

Good luck!

Anyone wanting to collect prizes should let the person offering know. And if there are more winners wanting to claim them than prizes offered, I suggest you all get together and organize a draw or something. :D

So I thought about my book and the words (specific words) that I was going to write.  But I didn't officially get them down till this morning.

What say you?

Looks like the game has moved on somewhere else, which is totally fine.

But I just wanted to share - I've just finished my first draft of book 4!! It's taken a heck of a lot longer than I'd hoped, but I'm now at just shy of 77K words, and I normally add at least 10K in editing.  Plus there's some family drama to add in (to the book, that is).

And four books into this series, I'm discovering that I don't hate editing as much as I used to.  I'm looking forward to ironing out all the kinks.

This thread helped a lot to get me back on track and focused with a lot of busy real life stuff going on - thank you all.

Hope everyone else is writing well.
