Title: Weird free download numbers
Post by: Jan Hurst-Nicholson on October 27, 2018, 06:30:08 PM
The free promotion on my non-fiction book ended on 20th October. My KDP dashboard shows a free download on 22nd and another one today 27th. How can that be?  :shrug

Sounds like at least one store did not return to paid. Check each one. If you find one, send a KDPgram.

I had this happen once, and turned out NL store was still showing free long after the others reverted.

Thanks, this makes sense. I've checked all the stores and they are all showing a price. It's seven days since the promo ended so it's very odd that a free one has suddenly popped up. The total number of giveaways hasn't gone up, so I'm wondering if two sales have been recorded as free.  After all the other debacles, anything is possible.

Could just be a lag in reporting.

Could be, but seven days is a long lag time. And the total number of Giveaways hasn't gone up to correspond with the two downloads that came after the promo had ended. I no longer trust Amazon reporting  :rant

Jan,

I've had this happen many times. I've always assumed it is because whomever clicked on BUY NOW, sent it to their Kindle, then didn't open the book until much later (hence the lag time).

Thanks. It's the first time it's happened to me, but that sounds like a reasonable explanation.

Maybe it has something to do with billing for paid books. Someone can d/l the book, and not get charged until they open it? Who knows with the mysterious 'Zon!

Yes. The sales dashboard is showing the extra downloads, but they are not reflected in the month-to-date figures. :shrug
