Is there a secret to keeping Mailerlite emails from going directly into recipient's junk mail bin?

If you have your own domain you should authenticate it. That will help. Then of course don't use spammy text in your emails. Here's how you authenticate your domain for mailerlite. https://help.mailerlite.com/article/show/29280-how-to-authenticate-my-domain
