Tens of thousands in the torchlight parade before the fireworks over Holyrood.

Just wanted to share. There is nothing else like it.

Having lived in Edinburgh previously for six years and working there (heading there now), I must admit to never having attended an Edinburgh Hogmanay. It does look brilliant, and makes a change from London being the centre of attention. Grin
Tonight, I'll be seeing in the New Year down in the Scottish Borders with my family (and avoiding the BBC Scotland channel).
I wonder if people go First-Footing anymore.

I don't cope well with the crowds in town, although I think we did take part in the torchlight procession once years ago when the kids were small. The most I've done apart from that was to go out to the nearest open ground (a golf course, naturally) to see the 'Seven Hills fireworks' one year, but since then the official festivities have always been in the city centre.
There have been some inconveniences over the years such as trying to get my brother's Labrador not to climb into bed with me when she panicked at the sound of the fireworks, and many buses not running their usual routes.
I don't think first-footing happens now except maybe among groups of friends.

I was in Edinburgh for Hogmanay (apparently spell check thinks that should be Mahogany - now that would be a different story) many, many years ago. I don't particularly like crowds and it was disorganised chaos, but of a lovely kind - everyone was out for fun, nobody was getting impatient. It was a bit like, many years later, coming out of a rugby match - there was no jostling or bitterness, just good banter and camaraderie. So, not bad as crowds go.
That said, I've never been back - once was plenty for me!

I must admit that I prefer looking at it from a distance. I've read that the 300,000 that attended in 1996 was a record. I do know people who still First Foot but I think it is amongst friends and family.
The torchlight parade is spectacular by any standard though. Here is another picture that a friend sent me of last night's parade.
