Hi everyone. Please forgive (and correct) me if I'm doing this wrong. I'm new in more ways than one.
I would like to start doing some freelance proofreading and/or editing, but how do you start?
Background: I'm one of those people who can't help but see errors; they just jump out at me. (Except in my own writing, because that's life.) I have an MA and a BA in English (and most of a PhD I might not finish). Before pursuing my PhD, I worked a couple years for a small textbook publisher--first as a part-time proofreader, but then they bumped me to full-time "Writing Specialist" (which pretty much meant planner, writer, editor, and proofreader of various parts of their next edition). Other than that, I have a couple of very minor publications, nothing to mention really. I've taught college writing part-time for the last seven years.
I'm just now jumping into the world of self-publishing, and while I'm excited to be writing my own stuff, I honestly think my talents lie more in helping others make their stuff better. I did this for a friend who was stuck on her MA thesis, and it was more fun and rewarding than almost anything I've ever done--especially when she sang praises about how I had saved her degree and whatnot.
It would be great to start doing that more regularly, with done remuneration for my time. But where do I start?
