Forget trying to plot what COULD happen.
Keep up with the deadly virus in China.
Villages are starting to build walls and erect checkpoints to barricade themselves from outsiders who might carry the virus.
Take notes about what really happens while civilized people feel threatened.

I'm waiting (I think it will be a short wait) to see what our new government ID cards will look like.
Will it have symbols in certain places that will allow us to travel beyond our "shelter in place" (although the order has now changed to "stay at home).

It's a story as old as history. Ancient cities had walls and armed guards for good reasons. Same for medieval cities. Same for some modern cities:

The details of those "good reasons" vary, of course, but they all boil down to the same thing: there's a credible threat of a bunch of people showing up and causing pain for the residents.
Fun fact: the MC of my trilogy begins his story in a walled city in post-apocalyptic America. That setting was inspired by the image above (which is the Alphaville community of Sao Paulo, Brazil, in case anyone was curious).

I always spend 2-3 hours on the net every AM, taking the pulse of current events, technology, politics, and the writing business. When the virus story started breaking in December, it caught my interest. I was nearly ready to send out my current WIP to beta readers, but a virus based story line kept intruding on my concentration. On January 15th, I gave up, and started writing what has become
‘After The Virus Apocalypse’, which is fiction today, but...
What if a bio-weapon escapes after mutating and the cure no longer works. Suppose it mutates again while infecting the initial victims, goes dormant if the victim -recovers, and returns, without symptoms, to be contagious again before killing the weakened host.
This story opens with a description of how the virus escaped.

Nothing that's happening that hasn't already been written in apocalyptic/dystopian fiction. The run on toilet paper, the lackadaisical government response... All of it. The rioting and police/military presence will be coming. Then comes the hiding, the killing, the government gone totally bad, warlords taking over, women and children basically property again.

Yes, bombs are a nice addition (narratively, anyway). I've made a career out of the Apocalyptic genre starting in 2012 (not post-ap: I start at the beginning and take you through the apocalypse, which never really ends). Of course, the Eden Plague is quite a different disease, but I ended up being eerily prescient about a few things, such as the quarantining of cruise ships.
