I just got the emails staying Worldcon 2020 in NZ has been cancelled, and instead they are going to be doing a virtual event instead.
The memberships are also changing, and for now, they cannot be purchased. Sounds like they are going up because of technical requirements.
I was hoping this wouldn't happen, as I was looking forward to it.

It's pretty far out to be canceling, but nobody knows what's happening globally.
Very disappointing for you because your part of the globe doesn't see WorldCons nearby that often and your expense in getting there would have been minimal compared to hopping a plane for Europe or the U.S. I think China has a bid for one of the next ones. I imagine no one is going to vote for that now.
Although we had canceled our tickets, we were still checking periodically for some super deal on the frequent flyer miles. Maybe by the time we have the current requisite number saved up they will have doubled the requirement again. :HB

Yes. But this end of the world bought the 'this is going to last for 6 months' hype.
Australian govt don't expect airports to reopen for 6 months and said so in public. New Zealand has been more proactive than here, and obviously believes the same.
With the NZ government like that, they just don't have a choice but to make a decision now, and try to save it another way.

Worldcon NZ are currently making a virtual dealer room environment.
I was thinking of resurrecting the WriterSanctum table idea, so whoever wants to go in on a virtual table can do so.
You need to be a Worldcon NZ member, and it's $25NZ to join the table. But you can link direct through to your best selling platform from it.
We'd need someone active in the attached chat room all the time, so a half dozen or more people across the time zones would be good.
Anyone interested?
