Title: Hoopla results
Post by: spin52 on August 05, 2020, 07:06:11 PM
When D2D first said they were going to distribute to Hoopla, I signed up, only to find it was going to take several months, if ever, to get books listed with them. So for the next couple of books, I didn't even bother. Yesterday, to my surprise, I got my first set of sales (borrows?) figures from Hoopla and it seems people do actually use it. So I went back and signed up the books I hadn't enrolled.
Anybody else had this unexpected but pleasant surprise?

I went back and looked and have 2 copies this year of one book that went through hoopla. A lot less than selling the book, but I also have money from my permafrees being borrowed. I probably should put all my books on there.

I heard some good things about Hoopla. I had given up and taken my books off "publishing" on D2D, but last month I put them back up hearing good things. Now I'm waiting the 6-9mos. Maybe it's so backed up because it's effective?

I got a very nice surprise. It's an old book (first in a series) I put up months ago. I keep expecting D2D to email and say it's a mistake.

I haven't put the rest of my books on there because I was just trying out D2D for Hoopla and a few tiny places Smashwords doesn't go. Now I have to put the rest of my books on there, because turns out if this isn't some kind of mistake, it's real money. :-)

Between the time my books went up on Hoopla last year and the end of this June (June 30th is the end of my publishing company's fiscal year), I earned $170US. Not a fortune by any means, but it's money, and in this business, you never leave money on the table. Mind you, my last three releases (one dating back to Oct 2019) still aren't up on the site.

One of my books was stupidly priced at $1.99 when I didn't know what I was doing. I removed it when it was never published.

D2D says "Hoopla doesn't allow price changes". Does anyone know a work around I can do for pricing this book, or should I just forget submitting it to Hoopla? At $1.99 for library, that's like giving it away.

Did you do anything to market your book there or did it just sell on its own after publication?

Not a whit of marketing. This was essentially free money.

Yes, that's the main drawback, that it takes so long for  books to appear on the site. There are some D2D sites I've never seen anything from, so this was an unexpected bonus.

I'm with Author Republic who distribute to Hoopla automatically. It's a good chunk of my monthly Audio income.

Any ideas why it takes so long to get books up there?

Are they manually merchandising / testing things?

They currently have book 1 of my trilogy but not 2, 3, or the box set, even though I uploaded all of on the same day. What's that all about?

I think they are putting the prawny books at the end of the queue.

I think originally there were some hiccups on the deal between D2D and Hoopla, but it looks like those were ironed out. As to why books uploaded on the same day don't all appear at the same time ... no idea.

I'm kinda shocked but Hoopla has turned out to be a nice little surprise for me for the last several months. I really didn't expect it, especially for a five year old book under a pen name that has only one other release (which isn't on Hoopla) and hasn't been selling for a while (because no new releases, although I certainly planned to do more at the time, just never happened).

$54.18 for Jun-Aug.

I did finally get the second book for that pen name up there last week.

I should probably make the effort to get my others there, but my thinking is that I make a lot more money with my main pen name and the books sell at full price (6.99). Putting them on Hoopla could (possibly) eat into my income, so I'm not convinced I want to do that just yet.
