Title: Mailchimp questions
Post by: notthatamanda on September 23, 2020, 09:28:28 PM
So I am doing my first mailchimp promotion for a Kobo promo for my one subscriber. The text is limited to 60 characters. I assume this is because I am using the free version of mail chimp? It seems to me that the best thing it to put the links in for the books but that takes up all the space.

Subject line: 40% off Amanda's complete trilogies on Kobo

Text: Check them out: Link 1 and Link 2.

It's going to look terrible but I have no other ideas. When you pay for mail chimp can you hyper link text in and email like on a website?

I really don't know what I'm doing so please throw any mailchimp advice at me.

Edit - oh the 60 character limit is for the text preview not the email. I am very dumb, sorry.

Thanks for the help.

Okay, so I figured out how to write a mail chimp email even with links (yay me - that's a big step)

My test email didn't go through, possibly because it put my personal yahoo email in there, which I really don't want to use. My website is a free wordpress site. Do I get an email associated with that site? I poked around on my site but I'm not sure that it is included or where to look for it or where to set it up.

Thanks for the help.

Edit - I buy my domain name through google so maybe they associate an email with the site?

Email comes as a server, but only with hosting packages. Free WordPress is unlikely to do that.

Just create another yahoo or gmail account to sent the test to.

One of the benefits of using paid hosting packages is unlimited email names and forwarders.

Thanks for the response. I definitely need another email because it was going to show the email as coming from my personal email and I don't want to use that. I do pay for my domain name for google.

Does anyone use google for domain names? I understand that is different from hosting, but I can I get [email protected] as my "business" email? Or is that strictly through the hosting?

I used to use Google for my custom email. It looks like they do it through GSuite now at $6 per month.

It's not much more expensive to get a low volume hosting package, move the website there, and then have unlimited email addresses on your own domain name.

My original site was only a bit over US$100 a year. If you're going to pay out $72 for an email address, you might as well spend a bit more and get the whole site, unlimited domains, email addresses, forwarders, databases, etc. Lots of hosts out there with reasonable rates for a low volume site. Even the better hosts have cheap entry level sites available.

What host do you use, if you don't mind me asking?

I pay the $90 a year for Wordpress.com premium plan, and it comes with an email address with your web domain . I.e. [email protected]. (I made that up... lolz). The plan also includes domain forwarding.

As for your Mailchimp questions... I'm on the free plan and I can insert all manner of links and graphics into my emails via the template designer. Is that not showing up for you? (Go to campaigns, email templates, create template, then pick one, and rearrange and design to your liking.)

Thank you for the wordpress info. I think I figured out mailchimp so far but got stuck when I went to send a test email. I have a lot to think about.

Do you use the new wordpress editor? I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to insert something new into an existing page. I had to put it at the top or bottom. I couldn't click on a block and insert something.

Thanks.

Yes, and I hate the new Wordpress editor, but felt a little better about it after wrestling with it for 4 hours.
