Title: Amazon have lost the plot....
Post by: TimothyEllis on November 08, 2020, 11:15:56 AM
I was just checking my current book, and noticed the also-bought slider completely missing (again), which explains why things have flattened out a bit lately.

In it's place, is "Top trending products related to this item"

4 pages of PAPERBACKS, and the only one not a paperback was a Hardcover.

Serious WTF Amazon?????

Whose seriously demented mind thought up replacing the also-bought slider with a list of paperbacks, when the person viewing hasn't bought one in 5 years?

Do they seriously expect me to suddenly buy paperbacks just because they stick them in my face?

Let's ignore for the moment that every single book on those sliders was something I'd never in a million years buy as an eBook, let alone as paper.

Someone at Amazon has obviously had the sort of great idea which should have been shot down and buried the moment it was uttered. Instead, someone actually did it, and thus demonstrated how out of touch with reality Amazon is these days.

I know someone there hates the also-bought slider, and is always thinking up ways of replacing it, but the reality is, the also-bought slider is the only decent place to find what you actually like reading.

Replacing the also-bought slider with ads of any kind, especially for paperbacks, is just INSANE.

ETA: All normal on my Aus page, so at least I can still also-bought browse.

They've been doing that sort of nonsense on Amazon Canada for months, and my sales there have cratered. I sell more on Kobo Canada than Amazon Canada nowadays.

This may be the wrong thread for this, but I'm more often than not, not seeing sponsored product carousels in the US right now.

Edit - "Products Related to the item" are the sponsored ads. I figured it out when I saw my book on the carousel, then noted the little sponsored fine print on the top left corner.

To be fair, if their algos are promoting relevant ads (which by all accounts they are), then 'products related to' is pretty accurate.

The nutty carousel is the 'Top trending products', as Tim says. Completely wacky and irrelevant.

Maybe they are gearing up for the holidays and hoping to catch people's eyes for gift ideas?
