I have a writer friend who has been out of the game for a few years and is wanting to know about modern formatting tools to convert to .mobi or whatever the current Amazon format is.
I think she writes in Word on a PC.

You don't need to convert to mobi.
Upload the docx, download the mobi.
-
Or upload to D2D, convert to epub, and then use that epub everywhere.
Or use Calibre to convert to epub.
Either way, epub is the format I'd recommend. I don't mess with mobis anymore.

I'm the opposite.
Every single book I produced as an epub was pirated.
As far as I can tell, since I stopped that and have been exclusively mobi, none of my books have been pirated.

Amazon asks for epubs these days, not mobi. It's on the upload page. Something about some (most?) mobi files not supporting enhanced formatting.

If you're looking for a generic "converts this file to that type of file" utility, check out Pandoc. We use Pandoc to turn raw manuscript files into EPUB and PDF, but there's a bit of a learning curve.
