Title: Didn't read free book because didn't like type face
Post by: Paul Gr on November 18, 2021, 07:30:06 PM
As in the title.
I downloaded a free sample of a free book but couldn't read it because it was type set in Courier New, a typewriter like font which I find challenging to read, at least in a piece of writing as long as chapter length.
Note to self, choose a different type face to Courier New if I ever do this.
(I currently write in Arial, which is very easy to see.)

I recently returned a book with the same problem. Couldn't even get through a page.

I'm curious. Are you downloading pdf's? If I download for my Kindle, font is hardly ever built in (I see it occasionally with older books that have been scanned). It's a choice among the built-in half dozen or so Amazon provides.

No. And it's a trad pubbed book. Take a look inside.

The first page starts with a brief blog post which is offset by using a monospace font. Then the post ends and it immediately goes into normal narrative in normal font. It looks like an online conversation is the theme of the book and this is the method they've chosen to illustrate it. It's not a formatting issue.

The font is still annoying.

This is a big part of why I personally don't care for font shifts for texts, emails, and so on. It doesn't feel necessary to have a visual facsimile of those sorts of things. We don't bother with it for other descriptions of written things, like signs or flyers a character may be reading, but for some reason there's a real common want to have it for anything digital, or sometimes a handwritten letter. It's not good book design though, because it draws too much attention to itself, and also wreaks havoc on page color. Personal opinion, of course.

I'm all for experimenting with the form. But experiments, by their very nature, will typically have limited appeal. Until one blows up, everyone copies it, and it becomes the new normal.

It's an epub, I downloaded from the author's website after he mentioned it on facebook, can't remember if it was a paid ad. or just a post.
Can't mention the title or author.
I just thought that he's created an unnecessary barrier by using an irritating font like this.
I'm pretty sure that I could open it in Calibre and change the font, but that's a step which as a reader I shouldn't have to take.

This sounds more like a formatting error than what Maggie mentioned. He may not have chosen it. (If your reader device/app can't switch the font, then it's intentionally embedded. If you can, he's got a bad default choice but it might not be the same font you see. But there's a high likelihood he doesn't even know and might appreciate being politely informed.)
