Title: Beware the latest WIN 11 Major update
Post by: The Bass Bagwhan on December 17, 2024, 12:01:03 PM
Hey everyone, with the latest WIN 11 update (I think it's called 24H2) I couldn't load Facebook, let alone log in, and several other sites wouldn't load either. I tried everything before resorting to rolling back the update. Fixed everything.

I'm real glad my computer isn't 11 compliant. My mother's computer went to 11 without me realizing it, and it's a total pain at times, as none of the back end options I prefer to use are there.

Next computer build will have a requirement of missing something 11 requires.

Yes, except support for Win 10 ends in Oct 2025 and potentially you won't be able to register the OS at all when you install it into a new build...

Have you ever used any support for Win 10?

I haven't.

I'm running a win 8 computer to order my Ubereats from in the tv room, and that is still getting updates.

As long as you keep the Firewall/Anti-virus up to date, and do what updates get sent, you shouldn't need any support from Microsoft at all.

Even if the updates stop, as long as your Firewall remains effective, you don't need to update to 11.

As far as installing into a new build goes, just get them to copy the entire existing drive to the new computer. The only issue then is driver updating.

24H2 is causing a lot of problems. My local LAN stopped working. I couldn't get it working, no matter what I tried. I rolled back to 23H2, and voila! Everything is back to normal. I turned off updates for a year. I'm not concerned in the least about security updates with Malwarebytes and Windows Defender running along just fine.

I checked for known issues. Apparently, the issue you had hasn't been reported yet. Anyway, thanks for the warning. I'll wait until that particular problem has been resolved.

That said, being unable to log into Facebook might be a huge relief!

Ah, now I know why Windows suddenly switched all my folders to OneDrive again and I spent hours trying to get my damn files downloaded that it so thoughtfully uploaded then deleted from my desktop, documents, and pictures folders. Many, many GB of data.

I suspected the latest update had screwed up.

Now I also know why I can't find the other folders I have on my network. I still have to straighten that out. 🤬

Apparently it was the December cumulative 23H4 update that screwed mine. Looks like 24H2 is still a voluntary update for mine.

Thanks for the warning.

I apparently have all updates turned off on all my computers and I plan to keep it that way.

Doesn't always work with 11. You can delay updates, but at some point they get made anyway. I think the window you can set is 3 months.

The only way of really avoiding them is making sure you shut down with the shut down only option, and not the update and shut down option. But then it will keep pestering you about it.
