Title: What Did You Blog About Today
Post by: Vijaya on September 28, 2018, 10:29:56 PM

I'm not seeing a thread for posting links to blogs, so starting one. Mods, if there's already a thread, please merge. Thanks.

I entered a writing contest to encourage others and here's my entry: https://vijayabodach.blogspot.com/2018/09/you-are-enough.html

I just posted some photos of fall foliage. (http://corabuhlert.com/2018/10/16/photos-autumn-leaves-2018/)

Goodness gracious, those are gorgeous photos! You certainly have an eye for photography. Autumn is so beautiful. As a lover of locomotives as well, I appreciated the picture of the train.  Grin

I posted on my blog today releasing two new things for readers: official artwork from my fantasy series, and the excerpt for the upcoming sixth and final book of the series. It was a pretty substantial update. I always love releasing art because it makes the site so beautiful and colorful (and it's just exciting seeing my characters come to life!).

Glad you liked my photos, Rosie. The weather and foliage was really gorgeous this weekend.

The train was a regular regional commuter train, though the different types of waggons and locomotives are interesting. There is a vintage steam train operating in my area, which is very cool, when you catch it.

Congratulations Cora! It's neat how these came from writing prompts. I think I am unable to write any story without some food in it. lol.

Mark, a lot of people don't interact but they still read so if you enjoy it, why not? Sometimes I feel if I don't blog my head might explode so I do. Still enjoying it after 10 yrs.

My just released perpetual calendar (paperback) that was a loooong time coming.
Partly due to not fully trusting the new KDP print, sorry KDP, it was a lot easier & quicker than I thought it would be.
Partly due to it being 400 pages & 365 of those pages having an original (by me) quatrain.
(A mammoth task that took longer than I thought it would but I still reached by self-imposed deadline for completion).

Was the book I am Legend better than the movie. I just wasn't impressed with the movie at all. I liked World War Z so much better.

Apologies - only now noticed this. In my opinion, the book was (as usual) a great deal better than both movie versions I've seen. Like I say in the blog post, the ending of the book is deliciously dark and I wish the film makers had been faithful to the book.

As for World War Z, I don't think they made a terrible attempt with the movie but, again, the book for me is far superior. As an aside, one of the more interesting parts of the movie is when the plane is coming in to try to land at Cardiff Airport. That's about twenty minutes up the road from my house and it's not often I see it mentioned in a major movie. In fact, I can't think of another one.

Wishing you a happy and healthier 2019, DM Guay.

I forgot about this thread, but I have been blogging.  You can find some Christmas (http://corabuhlert.com/2018/12/29/christmas-2018/) (one pic may not be quite safe for work) and New Year's Eve photos (http://corabuhlert.com/2019/01/01/happy-new-year-2019-and-some-links/) and I also waded into the hopepunk debate (http://corabuhlert.com/2018/12/30/the-hopepunk-debate/).

Love giving back to the Indie community and it gets content on my blog too.

I used to preorder everything he wrote, but couldn't get into some of his later ones. I think that's me, though; my tastes changing, crumbling probably along with my bones.

It's good that our tastes differ so much - what a boring world it would be otherwise. And our tastes definitely change as we grow older. I used to get excited around November each year when he was due to release a new novel, but haven't felt that way for years.

I enjoyed Jupiter Ascending for the audacity of the scope and ideas. Where they lost me was in the third act with all the busy-work saving her family. It could have been just one favorite at risk. Then the owner of the galaxy goes back to cleaning toilets? Not happening, suspension of disbelief broken.

You know, this was such cool research, I have to share. I participated in a paranormal investigation at the Queen Mary last weekend with Nick Groff from Paranormal Lockdown. I just wrote up a blog post about the experience. Best research I've done for a novel so far. It was for my supernatural romance which involves a TV show paranormal investigator and a skeptic tour guide at the place he is investigating. So, got some first hand experience investigating and even witnessed a seance in the most haunted room on the ship: B340.

Here is the link to the blog post:

Like I said, some of the best research ever. Had way too much fun. -Tiff/Marilyn Vix

When I was growing up, we'd occasionally find a box turtle in the backyard.  I haven't seen a live one in many years, though.  I miss them.   :icon_sad:

Thanks for posting those photos, Vijaya.  Neat stuff.   :cheers

Aw, thanks. I love these little turtles. I'm always rescuing them too... Jeff, I couldn't figure out how to post the picture on the "smile thread." I know I'm supposed to use the [img][img] button but when I click on the picture to copy and paste, nothing shows up.

I upload a pic to imgur first.  Then I use the link they give me for BBS/forums.  But I think a photo has to be hosted somewhere off-site before you can post it here using the img tags.  I think.   :icon_think:

You don't have to make an account at Imgur.  I don't have an account there.  I just click the "new post" button and upload a pic.  Then I hover the cursor over the upper-right corner of the pic to get the link list to show up.  Then I copy the BBS/forum link and use it here.

Once you do it a few times, you get in the habit, and then it goes pretty fast.

I've been blogging quite a lot recently, though I forgot to post in this thread.

For example, I continued my Star Trek Discovery reviews with "The Sound of Thunder" (http://corabuhlert.com/2019/02/23/star-trek-discovery-delivers-a-saru-centric-episode-with-the-sound-of-thunder/) and "Light and Shadow" (http://corabuhlert.com/2019/03/02/star-trek-discovery-visits-vulcan-in-light-and-shadow/).

I also shared my thoughts on the 2019 Academy Award winners. (http://corabuhlert.com/2019/02/26/some-comments-on-the-2019-academy-award-winners/)

Finally, I also announced a new series (http://corabuhlert.com/2019/02/24/introducing-thurvok-and-the-return-of-richard-blakemore/) and posted a free short story (http://corabuhlert.com/2019/03/04/first-monday-free-fiction-big-puffball/).

How publishers should navigate the Amazon terms of service (TOS):

Quote
First thing to understand about the Amazon TOS: There are actually several terms of services. Each program has its own terms, and sometimes the Amazon TOSes aren’t in sync.

For instance, Amazon Advertising lets you use competitor keywords. Amazon KDP doesn’t.

Or: Customer service for one Amazon group will even ask you to do something that would be a violation in another.

To give you an example, I ...

I keep forgetting to post to this thread, though I blog quite frequently.

Anyway, today I posted a free Steampunk story called "Tea and Treachery" as part of my First Monday Free Fiction experiment (http://corabuhlert.com/2019/05/06/first-monday-free-fiction-tea-and-treachery/). So far (it's the third month I'm doing this) the experiment has been successful, because sales for the stories I post for free actually increased and last month I even had people buy the whole series to which the free story belongs.

Other recent posts include a rebuttal to someone proclaiming Steampunk dead (http://corabuhlert.com/2019/05/05/the-premature-death-announcement-of-steampunk/) and a post about the joy of writing, how to lose it and how to get it back (http://corabuhlert.com/2019/04/29/the-joy-of-writing-how-to-lose-it-and-how-to-get-it-back/).

I keep forgetting to post in this thread, but I have been blogging quite a bit of late.

For example, I have continued my loose series of posts about the golden age of science fiction (http://corabuhlert.com/2019/06/01/more-about-the-golden-age/) and how it was more diverse and less monolithic than many people think (http://corabuhlert.com/2019/05/28/dispelling-more-misconceptions-about-the-golden-age/).

I also wrote two posts (http://corabuhlert.com/2019/05/17/the-problem-about-the-bells-and-game-of-thrones-that-no-one-talks-about/) about the ending of Game of Thrones (http://corabuhlert.com/2019/05/20/and-the-iron-throne-goes-to/).

Today, I posted "Lovers' Lane", this month's free short story on my blog (http://corabuhlert.com/2019/06/03/first-monday-free-fiction-lovers-lane/). I got the idea from Kristine Kathryn Rusch who posts a new free short story on her blog every week, then she takes it down and posts the next one.

I don't have as many stories as Kristine Kathryn Rusch, so I post one a month. And yes, these free stories sell books. I've had people buy the story in question and sometimes an entire series.

There have been several changes. For a while, Scribd kicked all romance titles out of its catalogue, because romance readers read too much. Then, they started allowing subscribers to borrow only certain books from the author's catalogue. And of course, you could never borrow a whole series at the same time.

My Scribd sales collapsed in late summer 2018, so I suspect they made another change then.

I was over at Galactic Journey again last week to write about the Dr. Mabuse movies of the 1960s. (http://galacticjourney.org/july-8-1964-the-immortal-supervillain-the-remarkable-forty-two-year-career-of-dr-mabuse/)

And by sheer coincidence, one day before my Dr. Mabuse article was posted, Artur Brauner, producer of the Dr. Mabuse movies and dozens of other, died aged 100. He was an amazing man with a fascinating life, so I wrote a tribute to him at my own blog (http://corabuhlert.com/2019/07/09/remembering-artur-brauner-and-dr-mabuse/).

Meanwhile, I'm still doing the July short story challenge, where I write a story per day in July 2019. I have written 13 stories to date and you can follow along in real time in this blog post I update every day. (http://)

Why Amazon’s “Buy Box” policy attracts counterfeit books and cheaters (http://blogs.harvard.edu/lamont/2019/10/16/amazons-buy-box-policy-forces-publishers-counterfeit-cheats/)

Covers pirates, used books being sold as new, and bogus shipping costs.

I'm over at Galactic Journey again, where I review two very good science fiction books by Margaret St. Clair from 1964 and our editor reviews some not very good science fiction books from 1964. (http://galacticjourney.org/december-11-1964-december-galactoscope/)

And at my personal blog, I have a companion post wondering why Margaret St. Clair isn't better known, considering how good the two books I reviewed for Galactic Journey were.  (http://corabuhlert.com/2019/12/12/the-women-science-fiction-fans-dont-see/) I also go into a couple of things I couldn't talk about in my Galactic Journey review, because Galactic Journey exists 55 years in the past, so I can't talk about anything there that happened after 1964.
