Table of Contents doesn't show up in Kindle Previewer
« on: April 05, 2019, 07:45:30 PM »
I'm creating an ebook in Sigil, and then converting it to Kindle format using the Kindle previewer.

When I view the book in the Kindle Previewer, I cannot access the table of contents from the "view all" menu. Earlier versions of this book, I was able to do that. I think the problem started when I added pages in Sigil.

I've had a look at content.opf and I can't see anything wrong. The TOC is listed in the guide section:
Code: [Select]
<reference type="toc" title="contents" href="Text/contents.xhtml"/>
When I test this book on a Kindle device, I can go to the table of contents using the "go to" menu, and I can jump from chapter to chapter using the next chapter buttons. So the logical toc seems to be working.

It just makes me nervous that this book is displaying differently in the Kindle Viewer, as if there's something wrong with it. Am I being paranoid?

I've attached screenshots of what the book looks like in the Kindle Previewer, the first screenshot shows the book as it is now, where I cannot access the TOC and only one page is shown. The other screenshot shows the book as it used to be, where I can access the TOC from that drop down menu, and the other pages are displayed as well.

Any advice much appreciated.

You're obviously better than me at this, cause you know how to use that sigil thing, so I don't know if this is helpful or not.  Why not try it in the Kobo previewer, or the D2D one?  My D2D problem of the letters getting chopped off on the page did not show up when I used the D2D generated epub and looked at it with the Kobo previewer.
At any rate, later today I'll be going Word to D2D meat grinder to Kindle previewer, so I'll let you know if I see the same thing.  Not sure how helpful that will be either, sorry.
Crossing my fingers for you, good luck.

Edited to add:  I just ran my Word document through the D2D meat grinder and put that on KDP.  Using the on line KDP previewer, my table of contents shows up just fine.  I don't know if using D2D to generate an epub for KDP is an option for you, or if it would fix it.  Hope you figure it out.  Amanda

It looks to me like you've closed something in the kindle previewer maybe? Looking down the side, maybe auto advance view? Did you try closing it and opening it again?

The other thing is, did you recreate the TOC after you added pages?

Good questions. My first thought was that I must have closed something in the previewer, but if so, I can't find how to open it again. Also, the TOC is not available from that little drop down menu I highlighted in the screenshot, and this only happens with this particular book file. If I open earlier versions, it looks fine and the TOC is there. I recreated the TOC after I added the pages, and I also looked at the actual code - in the toc.ncx file - and all the pages are listed in the correct way there. And the reference to the toc is included in the "guide" section of content.opf so I'm really stumped.

I'm going to recreate the book, this is making me too nervous. There must be something wrong with the code somewhere that I'm not noticing.

...and I found the cause of the problem. I had 2 unicode symbols in the text that's not supported by Kindle. I thought I'd removed them, but must have missed this one occurence.

It was U+1F65D and U+1F65F

when I removed them from the book, the problem disappears.
