50+ words a day...no matter what!
« on: October 02, 2018, 10:14:17 AM »
This is my new motto.  No more excuses!  No matter how busy I am, opening my WIP and typing 50 words is definitely possible.

Of course, once we're writing...there's no maximum amount.  50 words or 5,000+ is fine.  Just do it everyday!  No more excuses!!!  LOL :haironfire

Off to write.  Be back later. :mhk9U91:

Okay.  I just wrote fifty words for today, plus some extra words you maybe might consider a bonus.  So . . . what do I win?

I'm writing a Halloween-themed short story and I sailed through the first 6,000 words (over several days, I hasten to add) but the ending has me stuck. I've re-written those last 150 words at least four times. Does that count?

I'm actually sitting here researching self-discipline, since I seem to have lost mine. I should be writing about 3K a day.  :icon_cry:

Thanks.  I'm working on two WIPs at the same time.  The space opera and this other one.  I work every day on the space opera but I'm using the other one as my 50 words or better a day project.

Okay, so I've decided it's time to start holding myself accountable, and I don't want to get ahead of myself with the lofty goals of the 500 words a day thread, so I'm in. 50+ words EVERYDAY. Shouldn't be too hard should it? (Says she about to fire up the netflix  :icon_rolleyes:)

I managed to get 1120 words done today (yay me!) and in an ideal world I'd write another 880 when I go to bed...but it ain't gonna happen  grint

This month I set my goal to open my WIP every day AND write at least one sentence AND post my daily effort on a FB group I'm in.  So far I've managed just over 1000 words EVERY SINGLE DAY

Of course it's 11pm and I haven't started yet today, but there's always time...

Managed to get 1784 words done today despite a bit of a migraine. Also did some more plot refinements, and realised the small scene I wrote yesterday in an entirely different series is related to this current one, and looks like it might be a spin off that happens concurrently with this one. Excited about that  grint

Hoping to get some more written later, but posting now in case I don't. I think posting my word count publicly is helping me to not procrastinate so much,  hopefully I can keep it up!

I managed 2411 words before bed last night. More than I've managed in a single day for a long, long time. So very close to finishing this WIP.
Then I woke up this morning with the urge to rewrite a blurb. I'm counting that 116 words in today's writing total.

No words on my wip today, but worked on my plot. All hand written so at a guess a couple of thousand words maybe? The scene I have been working on went in a slightly different direction than I planned which inspired some new stuff.

Have a lot on tomorrow so not sure I'll be able to write, we'll see.

I've hit 62 so far this morning.  I forget to post, so I'm trying to do it now before I forget again.

I wrote like 700 yesterday. That's pretty low for me. I'm struggling to focus lately. My motivation is not that great. I'd love to get back up to cruising speed, which is like 3-4k a day.

After a few very slow days (thank you migraines, SO much help), I plunked myself down and got 2.4k last night. *does the dance of words* Whoohoo!

Unfortunately, this means my goal of finishing the book by 90k is once again a pipe dream. Looks like i'm on track for another 100k+ book *faceplant*

I just read an inspirational article about word goals: Instead of 50 words, how about two sentences? Sounds much more doable to me.

You are all doing so well!  I'm really inspired to see how much success everyone is having each day.

I did not write anything yesterday.  My kitty lost his fight to cancer early in the morning...holding on weeks longer than expected.  He was a very sweet and very tough little guy.

Feel for you there, that is the loss of a family member and horrible. I lost two in three months a few years ago and it was gut wrenching.

This thread however was a good find, three days of 2000+ words and a real roll hit the buffers today. Lots of staring at a screen and I think around 200 words committed. Feel a little better now though, and there's tomorrow to come.

Sorry to hear about your kitty.  Lost one to lung cancer a couple years ago.  Well, technically, the vet killed her.  (Not euthanasia.)  Still irks me.  Running total is one to massive heart attack, two to kidney failure (one long term, one short term), one to diabetes and one to lung cancer (idiot vet (imho)).

So forgot to post yesterday. I got some writing done, but it was personal stuff, not on my wip.

No actual words on my draft today either, but lots of writing in trying to figure out why I'm spinning my wheels, and working through the plot inconsistencies. It's still writing I guess, geared towards the final goal.  :shrug

Only 140 words today.  Approaching the end of Act One and I've killed off a character I probably shouldn't have, which means I need to figure out what's gonna happen in this transitional chapter that takes place before the last chapter of Act One.  Then it's into uncharted territory since I only planned out the story beats of Act One and only a rough idea of Act Two, most of which was committed to memory which is likely mostly lost to the sands of time except for those bits I actually typed up.  At least I know how it all ends.  Had that planned out long ago.  Well, mostly.

But Act Two is where some fun stuff should happen because that's when the characters go on a little adventure while trying to avoid being killed.  Good times.

This is a great approach! I've been using it, though I haven't posted here yet. Right now, my main project is revisions on book 2 of my current series, but I'm also working on the first draft of the next series. By the time I finish my daily quota of revision, I'm pretty wiped out (CFS/ME severely limits my mental and physical energy) but 50 words in the evening, that's easy! I focus more on writing scenes/parts of scenes than word count, and always end up with way more than 50 words. 800+ tonight.

PS: Lorri, I'm so sorry about your kitty. I've lost kitties myself (though none to illness), and they each leave a kitty-shaped hole in your heart.

530 words, late in the day. My main task today was taking two small scenes that weren't working in the novel I'm revising right now and totally rewriting them into one big scene that I think does what it's supposed to. Added 700 words there. So my brain was pretty fried, but I still managed those 500+ new words on the other project.

1500 words last night. It was the big crisis scene in this novella (prequel to a series). The protagonist got his heart broken, and he's about to make a decision that, while a very bad decision, is also the only honorable thing he can do. It's also the decision that kickstarts the conflict for the series proper. So, big, important scene, one that I've been working over in my head for a long time now. It was actually kind of fun to write.

Though I didn't get eve 50 works for well over a week. Didn't even touch the next WIP while I celebrated the completion of another. I broke my streak of do-nothing a few days ago.

Had one already well begun and already plotted in my evil little head.

Wed: 3K+ words
Thurs: 8K+ words
Fri: Just shy of 8K words
Sat: Edited 30K, wrote 5K+

Whoot! My streak should end soonish, but I'll celebrate it while I can.

Science Fiction is my game.

Just finished 465 words.  Worried about the amount of dialogue though.

If I can somehow manage 1,483 words over the next two days, I'll be at 10,000 words for the month.  Or, as Amanda M. Lee calls it, Tuesday.   :hehe

Off to a good start.  The first day of October, I wrote 75 words.  Today, the first day of November, I wrote 330 words.

This is a long chapter though.  I think around 3,500 words.  And a lot.  Of.  Dialogue.  Also, I need to remember to find beta readers since I haven't been in contact with my previous beta readers for over a year.  Or more.

I wrote 180 words yesterday and 210 words today.

My space opera, on the other hand, is largely stalled.  Writing a few words here and there each day but not making a lot of progress on it, whereas on this fantasy story (the one I'm counting for this thread) I've written 5,845 words for the month so far.

Though with only eight days left in the month, I'm not sure I'll best October's 10,002 words written.  I'd have to write an average of 520 words a day to match.

I wrote just over 1k words last night!  Today might not be quite so good, but hope to sneak in a little writing time after work.

Wrote 685 words today.  Three days to write at least 1,953 more.

Also, I finally broke the 50k mark on my space opera.  Well, not quite.  I'm not sure how much of the word count is notes.  Regardless, the word count is over 50k, so I'll take it even if it is with an asterisk.  LOL.

Only 130 words written today, making for near impossible odds of November beating October in terms of word count.

I wrote 1,000 words today in the wee hours of the morning.  Thought perhaps I'd do more this afternoon but that didn't happen.

Anyway, that put me at 10,430 words for November which just beats out October's 10,002 words.

Three days of updates here. grint

Saturday, December 1st: 615 words
Sunday, December 2nd: 485 words
Monday, December 3rd: 840 words

October Average: 322.6 words per day
November Average: 347.7 words per day
December Average so far: 646.7 words per day

I very much doubt I'll be able to maintain that pace.

Again, I'm only keeping track of one WIP here.

And I really need to finish the stories for my newsletter which will come out later this month.  I thought I had one or two finished already, but I checked the other day and four out of four stories aren't done.  Very bad.

I've sort of made it a goal this month to try to maintain an average daily word count of 700+.

Or at least 500 as opposed to just 50.

We'll see how that goes, especially closer to the holidays.  LOL.

This evening I drank a bottle of Gewürztraminer.

Snowy Dan is adding to my laziness guilt! I haven't written anything in the past 4 days! Well, some notes on future chapters but I don't think they count. And I've got a February series sequel deadline! Plus my mind is playing with ideas for 2 other stories...  :icon_cry:

I'll keep track starting... today? And it's the holiday season. Oh, the drinks I will miss.

Pulled off 1,453 words last night. It's a draft but at least there's something there. Plus two chapter outlines each for WIP. Hope the trend continues. The most I was able to do in a day was 6,570 words. Draining. Slept the whole morning of the next day as a result. Nope, won't do that again.

Add: I'll report periodically - starting 13 December. Beginning to feel the itch to write again.

Four weeks into one---45k, second one---27K, left by the wayside one---30k. Ugh! I hate the middle of a story where I know I have to up the pace a bit, raise the tension level and flesh out the characters as I head towards the dramatic climax. I find it such a slog to get past the middle sometimes, that all I want to do is ditch it and move onto the next one. I love starting a book and ending one when I am over that 70k mark, but the middle...blah!
