Let's argue: The Top 5 Films of the Decade!
« on: September 24, 2019, 01:03:30 PM »
"Gentlemen, you can't fight in here. This is the War Room."

No, the decade isn't over yet, but - the end is nigh... Just gives us enough time to argue over what the Top 5 movies of the past decade happen to be.

Here's my Top 5 - IN ORDER.

Please, feel free to tear these picks apart, and I will then mount a valiant defense in their honor by likewise tearing your picks apart ... ... or maybe I will quietly, begrudgingly go and sulk in the corner while admitting you've raised many good points.

Here we go! Fight! Fight! Fight!

5. Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
4. Paterson (2016)
3. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
2. Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
1. Arrival (2016)

Wreck-It Ralph (2012) - The perfect version of the hero's journey. He even wants a badge with 'Hero' on it at the beginning.

Inside Out (2015) - A wonderful investigation of our inner lives.

Big Hero 6 (2014) - Cool kids prevail. Cool = nerds.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) - Uh, yeah. I mean... Uh, yeah.

Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) - Popped the 'we must be serious' approach to COMIC book stories.

Top Five? Yeah, right. Here's my favorites since the beginning of 2010, in no certain order and by no means a complete list.

Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame
Ready Player One
Kingsman
John Wick
Deadpool
The Martian
Interstellar
Draft Day
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Riddick
Odd Thomas
Oblivion
Trouble With The Curve
The Avengers
This Means War
The Big Year
Moneyball
Midnight In Paris
Harry Potter and The Deathly Hollows 1 & 2
Scott Pilgrim vs. The World
Despicable Me
How to Train Your Dragon
Tucker and Dale vs. Evil
I will not forget one line of this, not one day. I will always remember when the Doctor was me.

I'm the Doctor by the way, what's your name? Rose. Nice to meet you, Rose. Run for your life!

5.  Edge of Tomorrow (2014)

4.  The Lego Movie (2014)

3.  Les Miserables (2012)

2.  The Avengers (2012)

1.  The Martian (2015)

For me, the best movie of the decade is The Martian, and it's not even close.  It's an absolute triumph of the human spirit.

Disclaimer: There are some very popular movies from this decade that I haven't seen but might like a lot.  The King's Speech (2010), for example.  Since I haven't seen it, though, I can't intelligently include it in the conversation.

Disclaimer 2: For the purpose of this thread, I'm including 2010 in this decade even though it's technically part of the previous decade.

The only one on your list I haven't seen is Wreck-It Ralph. I had both Inside Out and Big Hero 6 in my honorable mentions. Cool to see some overlap on Mad Max and Guardians, and my reasoning for including them is pretty much the same.

Oh, man, I had a hard time keeping Edge of Tomorrow and The Lego Movie out of my top 5. Love those flicks. Haven't seen Les Mis, and I liked The Avengers and The Martian.

And, yes, I was including 2010 as well (had a hard time cutting Inception from my list). 2010-2019. I don't know if that's technically incorrect, but that's what I was counting as being "the decade" in question.

LA-LA-Land -- loved that it was a musical as well. Les Miserables for the same reason and so well done.
Ladybird -- great coming of age story. The actress also did a great job in Brooklyn.
Inside Out -- I wish I'd written this. It was so well done.
Coco -- I'm a sucker for Pixar movies
Arrival -- smart, well-written

Yes, the ending of that film absolutely floored me. I've not read the short story it's based on, but I plan to.
