When to release
« on: December 15, 2019, 12:13:29 PM »
I am not sending out a newsletter or advertising my new novel until after Christmas but by that time I would like a few reviews up. I have several ARC readers who are asking when they can post their reviews. So... how long should I wait to make it go live? I'd really as soon that BB and Amazon 'new release' emails didn't go out until after Christmas but I think I have to post onto Author Central & tell BB that it is live for that to happen as well.

So what should I do? Wait a while longer? Or go ahead and release it?

I was going to set up a thread for this exact same question. I'm about to release a book and was considering the holidays too.

My thought was to wait until the beginning of the new year to publish, but send out ARCs over the next couple weeks during the xmas holiday (sounds like you?). The question is: will people be interested in reading ARCs during the holidays? I have a handful of regular readers, but I'd like to try to capture people through review services as well like Booksprout and possibly Netgalley. I don't know if people will be too busy drinking egg nog.

If you're asking when to publish, JR, my thought is to wait until the new year (from what I've gathered scouring through other people's experiences, the holidays are a bad time for a new release). But, perhaps, with your experience you think otherwise?

I had planned to release the paperback first in order to have a place for reviews on Amazon, but there's a wrench in my paperback completion: I'm not sure exactly of the page count yet. I do have a lovely cover though and a polished novel, so I might just send out ARCs early.

My experience is that in general sales start going up a few days after Christmas so I am thinking I may send out my newsletter on the 27th. I considered the 26th but as someone mentioned to me, that is almost as busy a shopping day as Black Friday, so I'll wait at least another day or two. I sent out my ARCs a week ago and two of my readers have finished and are asking when they can post reviews which is kind of pushing me to publish since I don't want them to lose interest in reviewing.

Honestly, I have never published this close to the holidays before, so I'm not sure quite what the best thing to do is. And I've never, for some reason, fretted so much over a release. I just re-wrote my blurb for about the 50th time. 🤦

ETA: Probably ideally, I would wait until around Jan. 3 but I kind of promised people they would have this one for Christmas, and I want to keep that promise.

My experience with trying to get ARC reviews during the Christmas holidays: Not good. Very few came through.
My experience releasing a book immediately after Christmas Day: The book was mostly ignored.
My experience publishing the print edition first so ARC reviewers could post their reviews in advance of the book release: They couldn't figure out how to post their reviews even when I pointed them to the page, plus the U.S. Copyright Office demanded that I send print copies as part of my application since the print edition came out first.
This time around I'm releasing on January 2.

Tell your ARC readers you meant Russian Christmas, which is January 7.  grint

I'm not sure my readers would buy the Russian excuse.  :icon_rofl:

Since I have a couple of ARC readers emailing me, I have hopes of getting at least a couple, but of course, my hopes could be dashed.

Why are blurbs so hard?!!? I hate them.

Thanks you two. I'll wait with ARCs & release in January.

By that time, people will mostly be done with the holiday clearance sales, but they probably won't be that awake on the 1st. The second is much better in that regard.
