The daily writing game continues
« on: September 20, 2018, 11:54:19 AM »
I'm quoting myself from elsewhere, but this is a continuation of my friendly little competition post I called the daily writing game.

Quote
Ahhh. I'm admitting here that I tend to have to find motivation to work on my books from outside myself. I have no idea why, because I like writing. Well, I like having written more, but I like writing most of the time too, once I get started. I've been writing for so many years that you'd think I would have given it up by now if it's so hard to get myself to do it, but nope. I'm a glutton for punishment, obviously.

Anyway... does anyone want to get in on a little competition? It's simple. You're in the game if you write some fiction every day. Don't care how many words, don't care how good it is, or if you turn around and delete it right after. But to stay in the game/thread, you have to write some fiction every day. Not notes, not research, but actual real words on some piece of your fiction. Every. Single. Day. It's a competition after all. A game. It's also the honor system, because the honor system is cool. Once a month, say on the first, we'll start over and everyone gets another shot at taking the prize.

By the way, there is no prize, except for all those lovely words. :)

Who'll be the last poster posting? Who'll make it to the end? How long can this go on?

So, any takers?

These are my own words, but if someone has a problem with me posting my own words somewhere other than the place I first posted them, I'm claiming fair use! :D

I had some takers and we all started posting that we were writing daily and I'd like to see the game continue.

The thread over there will stay active for however long it stays active, but I'll probably stop posting there at the end of the month and concentrate my own updates here.

Has anyone still in the competition for this month migrated here? If not, it's going to be a lonely thread. :-)
Don't rush me.

Yay!!!!
I'm here was just going to post on the other boards that I'm sorry to leave and hope we can start over here. You made my day.

My writing today was not the best. I think I'm at -2 words. That seems wrong very very wrong.

Ok I went back and tried to write. Got 28 words than I decided I hated everything and the delete button was doing bad things to my mind. I'm going to stop before I end up deleting everything.

I'll be in next month. I need to get myself back into the grove to write in order to actually get anywhere. But I should be good starting next month.

Also on a making your own mythos/history binge so that isn't helping my work count right now.

I'm in for another day! I'm not posting word counts because I've only been at it for about 15 minutes but I'm in.  :)

My streak actually started before the game started, and I'll have to axe some of those days for the game because they don't count, but I'm very excited that it's now 17 days long. Woohoo!

Oh, and I have a note about a prize someone is offering for a few winners so I'll try to get that written up and posted tomorrow sometime.

I really wanted at least a four-figure number for my first post in the thread here, but it was not to be. I seem to be stuck in a write-10-words, delete-6 mode. But at least I'm being lured to keep working at it.

I missed a day on Thursday - life stuff - but managed every day apart from that, and my total word count since this game started has gone up by around 14K words, which I'm pleased with.  (And that is even with me deleting several scenes that just didn't work.)

So this whole thing is working well for me.

I'm In!

There are 100 days until the end of the year. That's a good chunk of time to get something finished by the end of the year if I put words on the page every day.

I've written some stuff today, so I'm dropping in to say I've made it another day.

Okay, here's the prize update I said I had. *** Please read ***

I have an editor who has offered to do some editing for a set number of the winners (the people who write every day and make it to the end of the month)! I'm happy to pass on the information of the winners to the editor but there's a limit to the number of winners he'll take on, so... I'm thinking random draw or something. But I really don't want to deal with legal issues on this so I kind of need to know if this is something we can do before I commit.

Is this legal? Or is there a better way to deal with this? There could end up more winners than prize offerings for this little competition.

Also, I'm not good at this stuff, and that's 100% why I set this up with a big fat nothing as a prize. I, personally, am not putting myself in for any prizes other than bragging rights, assuming I make it all the way!

So, if everyone who is interested in winning an actual prize agrees on accepting this prize offer, and it's not illegal or anything, I need to be upfront that I will pass on names, and make a post, even add it to the first post of the month(s) it's on offer, but I'm not getting in the middle of any disputes that might arise from it, and I'm not taking on the responsibility to do anything other than pass on the info.

Okay? Got that? I'm know I'm sounding like a bit of a hardass about this, but I don't want there to be any misunderstandings. :D And I will not get into any conflict with anyone over this no matter how it turns out. Just won't do it.

So, how do you all want to handle this? *** Please respond *** Opinions are needed!
Don't rush me.

I admit that for me there has to be something more than bragging rights. A friend once said I'm the most competitive person she ever met, and while an exaggeration, there's truth to it. I was in the 1,000 words a day thread for a while and dropped out while still meeting the threshold. Posting a number there every day for what seemed to me no purpose just struck me as meaningless. I can keep a word count list on my own PC just fine.

All of which is to say to keep me going there has to be some kind of something to lure me into forcing out a few hundred words on nights I really don't want to. It's hard to believe there would be any kind of problem with it. We're not talking raffle or anything with a buy-in here. My original thought was for each of us to promise if we didn't make it to buy a book from someone who did, but that still means an end of month accounting and runs into problems with anon participants.

I want everyone who wants to be here to be here, but I'm just not willing to take on doling out prizes every month. :D If someone wants to take over that part and make it so that the people who want prizes can have them, I'm all for that. However, I will do the things I said I'd do in the post above, because the editor in question reached out to me about it.

But yeah, did not intend to set up a big, time consuming thing with this post, and really... don't plan to let it get there for me, because that? Will definitely run me off and stop me posting here! :D

The editing sounds great to me - generous. I was just saying as to the anything, something since you asked for opinions. I understand about the PITA factor of administering it. I might volunteer, but then I'd have to be noble and declare myself ineligible.

Do you have to start at the beginning of the month or how does it work?

Is it only for people that don't already write every day?

Not sure I'll be eligible.  I don't remember the last day I didn't write something.  I almost missed a couple days last week, but made it in just under the wire during the 11 p.m. hour.

At The Other Place, a few of us had noted that we weren't in it for the prize, but some like that as a motivation - everyone's different and it's cool - having this thread here is definitely keeping me coming back to the keyboard.

I'm certainly not in this for a prize (and I've missed a day, so not eligible anyway!).

Whenever there's a prize involved there's going to be admin in deciding who gets it.  The only suggestion I had was that at the end of the month, we have a list of those eligible (and wanting!) the prize and then to start with someone (either Lynn or someone else who's not in it for a prize) basically draws a name out of a hat and that's the winner.  If it was me, I'd write names on pieces of paper and draw randomly from a hat. Or bowl. Or vase. (You get the idea!)

And, although this might not be popular, perhaps the winner one month gets to do the draw for the winner the next month, and so on (although you can't choose yourself - so you can't win two months in a row). That way, Lynn doesn't get all the admin, having started this.

Fair? Transparent? Who knows, but it's a method.

What do you think?

ETA: Darn, I forgot - another 3,000 odd words added yesterday (some of them very odd) and about 1,600 so far today - Sunday lunchtime in the UK.  :icon_biggrin:
