Sales tax on author's copies
« on: December 13, 2018, 05:41:44 AM »
If you order author's copies of your book, Amazon adds on sales tax.
However, I have a retailer's license, which means I should be exempt from sales tax, because I collect sales tax when I sell the book.
Does anyone know how to deal with this with Amazon?

That's a great question. I don't sell enough to matter too much, and I know every business expense is deductible, so the sales tax is also deductible, but as you say, it would be preferable to be exempt.

I also have a resale certificate. I add the author copies to my personal account cart, then call Amazon to process the order without tax. They keep trying to get me to open a business account, so that they can mark it non-tax, but it’s more of a hassle than just calling in.
