older itmsp files not opening
« on: December 23, 2018, 12:32:27 AM »
This is a question regarding Apple Books and isn't very meaningful for people who use an aggregator instead of going direct.

Anyway, I have several itmsp files that I moved in 2016 from my macbook to an external hard drive. I'm not having problems with any other files on the drive.

But, when I try to open the itmsp files using itunesproducer (both straight from the external and even after moving them back to the computer), they won't open and I get the following message.

Quote
The document “#bookid#” could not be opened. Metadata Not Found

Any tricks that don't require me getting apple support to generate a new file for me?

I'm operating on the premise that your extension is correct, so can you open it up (I use a PC to do this) and see if the four files contained in the ITMSP are all there? Not sure if all four are crucial but I know one of them is named Metadata and it's an XML document type.

I remember having an issue once. I'll do some more looking to see what the problem was and how it was resolved.

My extension is .itmsp and the only program options to open that show up on my macbook are notes, terminal and itunesproducer - and none of those open (not even to show me the file's code).

Given that I can't find a help topic on it, I sent apple support a request to regenerate an itmsp file for me and send it to me. I have heard of them doing that in the past for another author who lost theirs. If they can't, I will have to unpublish it and create a new submission. I don't think it had that may reviews on apple to worry about.

While logged into iTunes Producer, use the search function (the field in the upper right corner) to search for your book and try to open it that way - it can pull in the metadata and content files even if your itsmp files are long gone.

Note, however, that the search engine is very temperamental ... it may not recognize the author name or the full title, but it may display results based on a partial title.

Good luck ...

You, sir, are my hero :D

It wouldn't do the title/author, but I used the apple # and that did the trick. Thank you!
