Promotional image advice for murder mystery series

Hello all!
I'm putting together some promos/ads for my murder mystery series. Do you have any advice for improving these?

Non genre-specific (free) advice: If those are intended for BookBub, cull like your life depended on it. 300 x 250 is pretty unforgiving when it comes to filling the ad with small text.

Also: What's the deal? I won't go so far as to say there has to be one (such as 99 cents), but what's the call to action? In Mary Portas parlance, what's the "point of difference"?

(If you like pina coladas AND getting caught in the rain, you MUST read this book!)

Another approach: Think movie posters. They go for a gripping central image and title, but beyond that there's at best room for one brief tag line. I don't know if people still walk past the theater and say, "Ooh, that looks good" like maybe in the olden days, but it's a damned effective medium, in my estimation.

Way old-school...

Superman: You will believe a man can fly.

Poltergeist: "They're here."

Blade Runner: Man has made its match... now it's his problem. (Editor's note: I had no idea Blade Runner *had* a tag line.)

See where I'm going with this?

Both of your images are strong but the text is trying to do way too much. Pare away.

(Good grief, who am I?)

Disclaimer - am prawn

I found the text hard to read on the ad, it was so small.  The second one was easier without the blood behind it.

Like Ethan, I also favor shorter, bigger tag lines.  I suggest making the five star review quote bigger to grab attention and shortening the synopsis to 150ish characters so you can also make that bigger.

The vibe is spot on for your genre. I do agree with the others that the text is too small for that size. Cull to the bare minimum text and make it larger. Change the Amazon button to something active like "Get it now." Otherwise clap clap bravo!

Really striking images - the first in particular.

To echo what the others have said, I think you need to pare down your text.

It might depend where these are going - if Bookbub, then a few words is all you really have room for - the click ads at the end of emails often have just a few words. If Facebook, I think there's more room for text but short and snappy works better.

The text on the first example is hard to read, too, because the background shifts - maybe play around with font / colour a bit?

Always love seeing your images, though - thank you for sharing.

Like others I’m reading this on my phone. Can’t read any text other than the title unless I enlarge. If your ads will run full phone width you’re probably ok but less copy creates more impact.

Simply going to echo what others have said. More like:

A dead mobster's corpse in her bed.

A murdered FBI agent. A web of deceit.

I'm sure you can do better, but that's the maximum # of words I'd use  Hook, not blurb. As a reader, I see so many book ads, they get a single glance from me, and my glance will only process 10 words max. Maybe that's just me.

Okay, everyone. Thanks for the input. I've updated the art on the original post. I used twicebitten's copy, if you can think of something better, please chime in.

BTW, here's concept art for book three by CoverShark:
