Kindle Free - when is it too many?
« on: February 12, 2020, 06:29:22 AM »
I set my brand new ebook to free.
Day 1 = 69 ebooks downloads
Day 2 (today) = 357 ebooks downloads

I also set it up for tomorrow to be listed on fussy librarian. Which I suspect will bring in more.

Is this getting to be too much?

I do not know if this is a good or bad thing.

Currently: #288 in free books
#1 historical middle east fiction
#2 historical fantasy
#2 alternative history

All free ...  :icon_rolleyes:

Whether it's a good thing or a bad thing depends upon how you feel about the strategy of offering books for free.

When I first started, there were people who claimed to have built their careers on strategic use of free days. As time went on, the device declined in effective because of the ever-growing number of free books available, but some people have still gotten good results. However, those contemporary successes are from people getting good sell-through on subsequent books in the series.

Since this is the first in a series, you obviously won't get sell-through. And it takes a lot of freebies to get any reviews, if that's your goal. So the argument could be made that it's not the best strategy.

That said, I know people who would argue for it as a way of getting recognition early on. If enough of the downloaders actually read the book, that could be true. There's an active debate on how many freebie downloaders really read what they download.

But if the strategy is effective, it relies for that effect on volume. So, if you believe in it, you want there to be as many free downloads as possible. On the other hand, if you worry you are losing sales by giving it away for free, then you probably shouldn't go down that freebie road at all.

I think I will just play this out and see how it goes.

I will probably do it again on the launch of book 2 to get sell through and again on book 3 to get sell through.

Some reviews would be good. I have more reviews on goodreads than I do on amazon, which is frustrating.
Downloads picking up - another 20+ in the last 30 minutes.

Wonder what will happen with Fussy Librarian push tomorrow.
If I get some pick-up KU or even paperback sales at the end - that would be a nice kicker.

My book does end in a cliff hanger and I have several people asking for book 2 and wondering when it will be released.
Good and bad - because if I get them hooked, I need to deliver.

I think one is too many.

My gut agrees with you.

However...
As a nobody - no-name - first time - author of a series, I thought to get some interest going.
Perhaps if 10% that download read it and like it, they will buy book 2 and/or tell their friends.

My hope or thoughts anyway.

One of 49 reasons I despise Goodreads.

One reason I don't end with cliffhangers. Plan B leaves some things undeveloped that would come into play in Riven Moon should I manage to finish it, but they are secondary, and I included a nice call back to perfectly end Plan B and the trilogy should I not finish the fourth book. heck, the first tow books can be read in either order and perfectly lead into the third.

The good news is that I wrote the whole series first (one long novel over 250k+). So it is written - just breaking it up into shorter books, book 2 is with editors and book 3 is being fleshed out. So the series is fully complete.

It looks good!  I just downloaded it.

I offer some free books, but I also follow up with social media including Facebook groups, etc.

Got home and checked (7:30pm AST) and it is now at 474 downloads for the day.
Tomorrow Fussy Librarian pushes and I wonder how that goes.

Certainly getting exposure and I hope that translates to fans, reviews, future sell through-series, and some KU, ebook, paperback and soon audible sales.
Time will tell.

Wonder how many free downloads actually read the book. My uneducated guess is 10%. Anyone know?

If you've got an effective sales funnel to other products, it's never too many.

If you don't, then it really depends on your strategy. (If your strategy for releasing a book for free is "I have no strategy" then 1 might be too many.)

I have 3 permafree books in my (so far) 19 book mystery series. Recently someone reviewed all 3 on the Smashwords site, which is extremely unusual, and just after I'd seen the reviews someone - possibly the same person, though it could have been multiple other people of course - actually bought a copy of each of the paid books I have available there, around 22 in all. This doesn't happen every day unfortunately but I couldn't help thinking all these transactions must have been made by one person, particularly as I don't have many readers who buy directly from Smashwords.

It's all subjective, after all, opinions are like a certain body part. In my opinion, one measure of success is the number of downloads that convert to sales or page reads (I see you're in KU) of book 2. Not having book 2 available yet may hurt you being able to quickly see the conversion rate between book 1 and 2.

I’m not happy unless I get at least 5000 over the five days. Preferably 6 or 7. More would be even better! But I have a long series and good read through.

Mine doesn't. After months with zero sales I'm suddenly at 2679 KU pages read as a direct result of the giveaway.
It could be that the pages read came from the free giveaway, but, as with so many aspects of self-publishing, we can't be sure.

The thing I like about being a prawn is that I can detect small fluctuations really easily. I've gone from low activity to a sudden burst of sales or pages read without my doing anything at all. It could be the surge in your case was encouraged by free downloads, but it might also have happened anyway. There's really no way to know.

I have no doubt it's from the giveaway. I'd get the odd read or sale in the past, but nothing like this. It looks like a few saw the listing but used KU to read Arbor Day, which is nice since I get donut money. The rest are all reads of the two sequels plus one full read of Relative Age. I doubt people suddenly decided to read two sequels without reading the first book (even though they can). I'm still hoping for actual sales, and some reviews and word of mouth. Donuts are great, but I could use a coffee to go with them.
Ah, yes, when later books in a series get read, that's a little easier to tell. And I think most readers do read in sequence, though I've seen exceptions.
