Amazon Follower numbers now available!
« on: March 13, 2023, 09:20:06 PM »
I have been a bit out of the loop recently due to... well... life!

I see that Amazon now shows you how many followers you have!

Has this been around for a while and I've just missed it?!

I am totally dumbfounded by how many I have, and how useless that appears to be.

Now, if they sent out a new release email on release day to all of them, instead of sometime in the next 60 days or never, it might actually be useful.

I was expecting about 1/6th of what was there, and all that shows me is the majority of those followers are not buying my books anywhere near release dates.

Ha!

Yeah, the page explaining how they use them is all a bit vague. It would make sense if they just sent an alert out as soon as a book was released.

Back when I started, they did.

Then at one point their email server overloaded, and they started lengthening the time for sending things out, and then discontinued them completely for a while.

They say 60 days, but the majority of authors I follow, I never get a new release email for their new ones. The ones I do tend to be co-authors of Anderle, and the only other debuts into the top 200 just off his own list. Everyone else, Zip.

If few readers read the author's page for "recommendations" etc and the Zon doesn't email prompt new release notices, what's the point of counting followers devoid of any useful marketing info about those followers?

Yeah, it actually sounds like something really good, doesn't it?

As it happens, I follow myself. I haven't gotten an email in ages, even though my customer account is set to receive amazon emails (and often does).

Like Timothy, I have a huge pile of followers, far more than I suspected. But I never see a surge anywhere near that big. Not at new release. Not 60 days out. Never.

If anything, my feeling is that it's harmful to have people follow you on Amazon. They may then become complacent and not think they need to check for new releases from you. After all, they signed up to receive new releases, didn't they?

That worries me too.

Given how often I see a batch of sales that seem to indicate someone catching up, it's very likely people have no idea I've been releasing every 35 days on average, and go 6 months or more without knowing they missed 6+ books.

I've not heard anything about a few of the authors I follow in so long, I've no idea if they've had anything new out at all.

There's a survey link at the bottom of the Author Central pages. It doesn't ask directly about satisfaction with Amazon followers, but I gave my opinion on that in the comments section--very emphatically!

I would recommend that everyone do the same. Maybe if whoever is in charge of the system thinks about it, he or she will realize that a properly functioning follower system could make Amazon more money. It's even possible that the current situation is the result of a misbehaving algorithm, and the powers that be haven't even realized something is wrong. Anyway, it's worth a shot.

Done, and urged Amazon to notify followers when I have a pre-order, too. Since half my books are published wide, Amazon genuinely is missing out by not sending new release notices. People do buy from other sources, duh.

Having worked too long w/nerds and geeks, I know that if you shout "1713!" in their presence they will not, as you or I, immediately think of the Treaty of Utrecht and the War of the Spanish Succession but "Ooh, what a beautiful number!"  The Zon, being Geek Central, probably thought we'd all enjoy seeing another #, that's all.  Even if it's dreadfully less than the jillion likes of which we dream.

Even if it's dreadfully less than the jillion likes of which we dream.

Mine is significantly higher than I ever expected, and if that was actually being utilized properly, would put all my releases into top 500 instead of top 2500.

The core part of my email list is on Facebook, so they get the news there before my email goes out. And most of them pre-order, or as soon as I know the date, they calendar it for KU download. So my email list is pretty average about clicks.

But if the Amazon followers were getting day 1 emails or text messages, which I suggested, my releases would be doing a great deal better.

The number of followers is actually quite depressing, not from the number, but the realization of so many bothering to click the button, and yet not knowing I've got a book out.

The other thing I just pointed out to them is 60 days to send out a new release email means they're actually 2 books behind me!

That was an eye-opener - I have about 30 core readers who are active on my FB page but lots more Amazon followers. I hadn't even looked at author central for some time and it's completely different now - I must go back and do some updates when I get a minute.

I just got a new release email for an Anderle co-author, and it's not only on the release day, it's before any rank adjustment has occurred. The book still has a rank of 400k.

Now I'm really confused as to who gets new release emails, because if this is supposed to be normal and I'm getting these sent out, then I'm seeing only a 1% conversion when you remove those who pre-ordered.

So either I'm not getting them at all, or the followers list is not converting to sales/KU.

It's possible they don't convert well. Until just recently, we couldn't have told because we had no idea how many people were following us. Hypothetically, some of the followers may not have accepted Amazon emails of that type in their preferences--but in that case, why bother following authors?

I'm more inclined to think Amazon just isn't sending them out, except for the favored few. But since you make a living at writing, your sales volume must be pretty good. I wonder how high one has to be to make the cut.

So I'm now very confused.

I asked my fans if they were getting follower new release emails for my books from Amazon, and 95% of the responses so far are YES.

And yet, I'm following myself and not getting one.

And I definitely am not getting anything like that follower number worth of sales or reads. Not even in the first month.

I wonder if Amazon has a mechanism that prevents emails from going out to people who follow themselves. Since a lot of Amazon functions don't connect the customer account with the author account, probably not. (I get emails inviting me to review my own books from time to time.)

Timothy, I just followed you as a way of checking. Since you put out new releases so often, it shouldn't be too long before I can report getting one, if I do.

Most likely, around the end of the month for the next one. Unless I get a a new short out before then. Current WIP is running well late.

Probably either something to do with your internet provider or something to do with the fact that you live in Australia and there's some quirk involved.

That 95% number, though, definitely suggests that the problem is somewhere on your end rather than on Amazon's end.

I've said before that I follow you on Amazon and receive new release notices for your books pretty much immediately after you publish them, and that's still the case.  Everything works here like it's supposed to.  Whatever the problem is, odds are its Down Under.

I'd buy that theory, except that I live in the United States and have the same issue.

However, Timothy is a bigger seller than I am, so it's possible that he's among the favored ones, and I'm not. There's just no way to know.

Timothy might be able to tell if it's an ISP issue by whether or not he gets other author emails from Amazon. I don't follow that many people, but I do get some, as well as many other emails with book recommendations. If one allows that kind of email from Amazon, there tends to be at least one a day, sometimes more. So that could be a valuable clue.

I do get them for several authors, including as I said, Anderle's co-authors.

So I do get some.

I also get reminders to buy my own books all the time.

So there is no block on Amazon emails at all.

Okay, so this is odd.

I just got an Anderle New Release notification, and I just checked to find I'm NOT following him. Not for AU or US. And yet I get all of his and his co-authors notifications.

Why?

The email is coming from the AU store.

Based on titles you've viewed, read in KU, or bought. (Or possibly, on reviews you've posted on Goodreads, since Amazon has access to them.)

I don't think it has anything to do with what you publish. I get Regency romance release info from Amazon and I don't write it. But I do look at a lot of Regency romance titles on Amazon as a result of newsletter discount ads.

I'm not in KU, and don't review at all. And the only book I have is an anthology where he did one of the stories.

What I'm wondering is if him being at the top of of the author pyramid for sci-fi/fantasy is why I get these?

I guess I'll need to pay attention to the next co-author ones and see if I'm following a co-author instead. Might be that doing a series of link ups.

Amazon sends out a lot of recommendation emails. Only some of them are triggered by the authors I follow. This much I know for sure.

Browsing history on Amazon is a key factor in determining what emails you get. But it wouldn't surprise me if people at the top of the pyramid get juiced automatically, even if you haven't visited their work much--or at all. It's part of Amazon's "Help the Authors Who Don't Actually Need Help" program.

It's not that it's bad for Amazon to push products that are already selling well. But the way Amazon handles things leaves money on the table by not doing much of anything for people who could be selling better. Not sending out new release emails, even when people sign up for them, is a case in point.

The system has only gotten worse in this regard. When I first published, I wasn't a bestseller, either, but people who knew me reported getting Amazon emails about me. It's been a long time since I heard that. And while it's true my sales have never been astounding, I am doing better than the average self-published author. It's as if Amazon only sees people who are at the very top. Anybody else is pretty much lumped into the same "Beyond Help" pile. At least, that's how it feels most of the time.

I suspect its a bandwidth thing.

Amazon sends out a ton of emails just for actual sales, and it's normal emails and newsletters.

I suspect the follower emails start at the top of the author sales pyramid as you suggest, and filter down until they reach a quota level, so as not to overload the email servers. Or maybe the spam blockers.

Maybe that's what the author ranking system was actually about before they deleted it. They were creating a way of ranking authors for such a quota, and the deleted it when they had the algorithm done properly. Guessing. From memory (questionable), the follower emails went flaky after they deleted the author ranks. Linked? Guessing.

Yeah, it seemed odd that they spent so much time developing a system only to scrap it. Though there may have been another reason for deleting it. (If Amazon's only intent was to develop an algorithm for determining who got follower emails, that could have been without ever sharing the data.)

But if that really is the way it works, then Amazon should stop offering the follow button on the pages of authors for whom it's meaningless, anyway. As I said below, it misleads customers into thinking there are no new releases by a particular author, when, in fact, there might be many.

That's why I asked the question of my fans, in case they weren't getting any. But apparently most of them are.

It makes no sense given my sales though. In the first month, only about a sixth of my followers actually buy or read.

Unless their follower button follows the same rules as email lists, and only 10% conversion is normal for that too.

Given that the new release notifications are also sent out by email, it would make sense that the conversion rate would be roughly similar. I guess it depends on the motivations of the people who sign up. I can't imagine why someone would follow an author and then pay not attention to new releases. But people do sign up for mailing lists and then do the same thing.

By coincidence, I had an experience of this kind of thing in a completely different context yesterday - I use Mailchimp from time to time to send out group emails to members of a local organisation, inviting them to meetings and letting them know what's going on. The manager passed on a message to me from one of the members complaining that he'd never been invited to any meetings in his 5 or 6 years of membership, so he didn't think he was on our mailing list.
When I looked into it I found that not only was he on the Mailchimp list, but he had a 100% open rate for the emails I'd sent out,  ncluding one earlier this month. So yes, sometimes people don 't just ignore emails but conpletely block them out of their minds.

Yes, there's reality, and then there's what's going on in people's heads. This is why a small number of people who have signed up for my newsletter complain that I'm spamming them. At some point, they forget they signed up.

I've also seen it work the other way (people "remembering" things that never happened). For instance, when I was teaching, I once had someone leaving voicemails for me on the school voicemail system during the summer, when I wasn't around to check it. When I got back, I listened to the first two, followed by a third that said something like, "Why aren't you returning my call? I've left you twenty messages." Meanwhile, the principal had gotten a voicemail that started out with, "I've left Mr. Hiatt a hundred messages." Probably, there was some rhetorical exaggeration here, but when I called the person back, she really did seem to believe that she'd left more messages than she actually had. Of course, she was a parent who seemed oblivious to the existence of summer vacation, so there's that, too.

Human memory is a funny thing.

Human memory is a funny thing.

I've had arguments where all I said was NO the whole time. Then weeks later I get accused of not doing something, and they insist I said yes.

People remember what they want to remember.

Do we have any rough idea of when Amazon pings our followers following a new release? I think the site said within 60 days, but that's a huge window. Is there an average in your experience? Any method to when those emails get sent?

I had a push notification on my phone app within hours of my last book releasing.

I've only ever bought 1 of my books, when I had it set to free, but apparently that's enough to get notified about a new release.

They do still send out emails, but it's pretty flaky. Sometimes you get them and sometimes you don't.

I think the push notification off the app is a better idea.
