Venom at 28% on Rotten Tomatoes

Apparently, the movie tries an oddball sense of humor and the critics aren't having it. I was looking forward to this, but the latest trailers reinforce the complaint that Venom's dialogue is incomprehensible. I can't understand a word he says when in the character of Venom. Pet peeve of mine, that they let actors mumble.

Actors always mumble. They don't get voice training. It's all in the breathing you know O.o

I'm not surprised. The director and screenwriters hardly comprise a dream team.

In my opinion, Sony is focused more on churning out a quantity of movies using the Marvel characters they have rights to in order to bank on the success of Marvel's own movies and less focused on making quality movies using those characters.

Gaga's fans trashing Venom probably wouldn't affect the "Top Critics" rating on RT (currently at 27%) or the rating at Metacritic (currently at 25).

A movie Youtuber whose opinion I value posted a pretty positive review of 'Venom' so I'm going into it with optimism. Also, most major critics fell all over themselves to heap praise onto 'The Last Jedi' and I couldn't stand that movie. They also did largely the same for 'Black Panther', which - while not a bad movie, in my opinion, was also kinda so-so in my book... so I'm dubious on RT ratings at this point.

ETA: Come to think of it, RT was all over praising 'Wonder Woman' as well, and that movie was also pretty 'meh' in my book.

Wait, was it Tom Hardy acting as Bane, acting as Venom?

Holy meta, Batman!

Personally, I think Rotten Tomatoes is the rotten tomato.

I ignore them now completely. In the past I paid attention and avoided movies they panned, but then I found a few in the cheap bin, and discovered I really loved them.

So rotten tomatoes go in the bin.

I used to run a movie website and part of my job was assigning reviewers to, well, review movies. Trust me when I say, ANYONE can become a "reviewer." All our reviews were part of Rotten Tomatoes.

We'll start our own movie review thingy here on WriterSanctum and get ourselves included on RT as well.  :tap

When it comes to Rotten Tomatoes, I've discovered that my tastes almost always fall in line with the audience score, not the critics' score.  I guess that makes me part of the unwashed masses or something.   :shrug

Venom was a fun movie. The CGI was a bit off in some places, but they got Venom and Eddie's characters down pretty well. It was a weird buddy movie where the buddies are in the same body. The conversations between Eddie and Venom made me laugh a lot because they were just as absurd as they should be considering the source material. Most of the critics are just pissy because this was a Venom standalone with no Spiderman. Apparently, people forget that while Venom and Spidey are closely linked, they ain't married! Venom has plenty of misadventures all on his own and setting up his character in a solo film opens the door to a Venom-Spidey movie down the road.

Yeah I loved the buddy movie aspect, and they did some really fun stuff with the action scenes involving Venom. I'm not even mad about the CGI being off, because they were going for that watery effect on Venom which looks awesome but would be hard to light consistently, I imagine.

I just wished they'd pushed for a higher rating. Some Deadpool-level gore would have been really fitting, I think.
