What should I listen to?
« on: October 11, 2018, 01:13:11 AM »
I don't have a long commute, but I can't stand local radio stations. So on drives to work, I usually listen to my own playlist or an audiobook. Recently, I started listening to (NOT WATCHING!) some Youtube videos that are done in a podcast-like format and realized I enjoy it. Now, I listen to whatever I'm feeling that day...music, books, or chatting.

Does anybody listen to podcasts? Anyone have suggestions? Note: I prefer PG-13 (I'll bail hard if they drop F-bombs and everything is about sex).

Things I'm interested in...
Writing (duh)
Marketing (double duh)
Inspirational/motivational (has to be entertaining!)
Geeky things (comics, movies, etc)
History (especially ancient history, pre-black powder)
Irish culture, history, and language
Mythology

Of course, if you do a podcast, let me know and I'll give it a try!

Also, I absolutely hate Itunes, so podcasts available on multiple platforms is preferred.

Edit: Of course, if you have other interests, feel free to solicit suggestions for yourself.

Mike Duncan's History of Rome podcast. During its 5-ish year run, it set the standard for ALL history podcasts.

I really like the "All the Books" podcast. It's hosted by Nic Gunning and Eric Mikols, librarians at the David A. Howe Public Library. They talk book new releases, book news and bestseller lists, comics, graphic novels, and movies. The podcast is basically two friends and co-workers chatting about everything books and book-related. It's not slick and polished like the big podcasts, and it's not exactly hard-hitting stuff, and it's kind of nerdy, but so am I. The hosts have good chemistry as well.

Additionally, I love that the podcast is not a downer, it's always light and fun and the hosts are not in-your-face type personalities. Being relatively young guys as well, I'm impressed with their fairly extensive book and pop culture knowledge. Makes for more interesting conversation. Highly recommended.

Oh, and FYI, I think there's more than one podcast called "All the Books" so, you may have to do some extra digging to find the specific one I'm referring to. Hope you like it.  :icon_cool:

Completely forgot Sanderson has been doing a podcast forever. I'll check it out.

It's available on other podcast apps, so yay!

I'll definitely check it out! Rome itself doesn't interest me that much, but their history with other cultures (Egypt, Gauls, Celts) does.

Is this a history of the English language? I took a class on Old English in college and it's evolution from primarily Germanic roots into modern English is fascinating.

I always have trouble keeping up with new releases so I'll definitely check them out.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Keep them coming!

Back when I was in real estate, about four years ago, I was working for banks and lenders, doing home inspections and valuations for homes going into foreclosure or being sold as short sales. Because of having to drive to these homes and inspect them, I would find myself driving three to four hours a day, so I was listening to podcasts that I downloaded and stuck in my phone. At that time I was listening to artist-centered podcasts. If I were to be doing it today, I'd be switching back and forth from those and writer-centered podcasts. When I got tired of that I just turned on Pandora and listened to music.
I will not forget one line of this, not one day. I will always remember when the Doctor was me.

I'm the Doctor by the way, what's your name? Rose. Nice to meet you, Rose. Run for your life!

For marketing, I've been following Techaltar on youtube. He might be talking about computers and phone, but he could just as well be talking about books.

For equipment, I've been following TechMoan. He's very amusing in that understated British way while he reviews interesting equipment (audio, audio formats, cameras, and other such nonsense).

I love Lindsay Ellis and want her to move next door. She doesn't so much review films and media as dissect it. What makes them tick?

For writing / marketing:

Paul Teague’s Self Publishing Journey (esp the Oct 15th episode!)
Mark Dawson’s Self Publishing Formula
Joanna Penn’s The Creative Penn

They’re all Brits, but there also the Sell More Books Show which is a US podcast.
