Enhanced Typesetting and Kindle Previewer 3
« on: October 16, 2018, 09:17:56 PM »
I like creating my books as mobis (sorry! I mean epub) in Sigil, and then converting them to kindle format with the Kindle Previewer. The new Kindle Previewer 3 is quite different. When I export the Kindle format book, I get a message that "Enhanced typesetting is enabled for the book being previewed but it is not supported in the exported file"

My guess is that what's happening here is that Enhanced Typesetting is enabled in the book that I've got open in the previewer, but you can't use it to create a book with enhanced typesetting enabled. Is that correct?  Is there a way to createa a kindle file with enhanced typesetting enabled? Do I need to worry about this?

You don't need to worry about this if you're happy with the .mobi file that KP3 produced.

I'm not sure why you would use KP3 to import a .mobi from Sigil and then export it to .mobi using KP3??

I think the issue is that the old .mobi format does not support enhanced typesetting. I don't believe if you used some other tool to create a .mobi file, say Sigil, for instance, it would support this feature. I think the error message may be a bit misleading.

If the preview in KP3 looks good then you should probably just upload the Sigil .mobi file directly. I have converted a Word doc to .mobi using KP3 before. When I look at the Amazon page for that book it says enhanced typesetting is enabled even though KP3 said it wasn't in the .mobi file.

Thanks for the answer, Guerin. I see I made a mistake in my original post - I said "mobi" where I meant "epub" Sorry for the confusion.  :icon_redface:

I could upload my epub to Amazon and let them convert to mobi, but I like to preview the mobi version myself before I upload it, which is why I use KP3. Not sure if it's the most sensible way to do things, but more than once I've made errors in the epub like not specifying the cover correctly.

My workflow is to create a epub out of Scrivener, edit that in Sigil so that it looks just right, then convert it to mobi.

I'm not sure if uploading in .mobi format guarantees your final ebook on Amazon is exactly what you see in KP3. You could upload your epub and then download the converted .mobi to preview before publishing. I can't say with absolute certainty that the results are the same using the two methods to create a .mobi.

I work in Word so I preview with KP3 before I upload. I will occasionally export to .mobi from KP3 to read on a Kindle device/app as a final proof. Then I upload the Word doc and download the .mobi from the previewer available during publishing. Call me paranoid.

I don't think you need to worry. I write in Word and use Calibre to create an EPUB that I use Kindle Previewer 3 to convert to a Kindle format book. I also get that message you mentioned, and I worried that my book on Amazon wouldn't support enhanced typesetting. But when I upload the book, it seems fine, and the product page says enhanced typesetting is supported. I've chalked it up to a glitch in Kindle Previewer 3.

I don't think the .mobi file supports enhanced typesetting. Older devices that don't support the feature will use the .mobi version. When you publish, I believe that a version in the newest Amazon .azw format is created as well. When someone orders the ebook, Amazon delivers the version that they're device will support.
