The End Can't Come Fast Enough
« on: October 17, 2018, 12:58:47 PM »
I just hit the 3/4 mark of my WIP and I'm freaking obsessed with finishing this thing but it seems like there's always X more chapters. I've been staying up late, waking up early and still there's always a mountain of words to climb before the official finish. Why can't I just be done n.a.o???

Do what I thought about doing with one of mine: Unexpected nuclear war.  Everyone dies.  Very sad.

Lol, I write romance. No one can really die...sigh. Honestly, at this point it's always tempting to finish it when they fall in love but noooo...I have to keep going just a bit further so they can be ripped apart then put together again. Almost there...

I've had the Book That Won't End. Every time I came to what I thought was the end, I realized I still hadn't solved the main problem of the story. So I had to keep writing more stuff until I finally figured out how to off the bad guy (it helped when I finally figured out who the bad guy actually was) and save the world. About 1/3 of the book comes after what I originally thought the end would be.

I've lost count of how many times I have wanted to just kill everyone and write "The End"...

I've experienced the same with a few of my books. Keep on going, it can't go on forever even if it feels like that. Just imagine how amazing you'll all feel when your books are completed!  :smilie_zauber:

"And they lived Happily Ever After."

Or, more seriously, what's the absolute minimum that needs to happen to get the draft done?

I'm stuck in the hell-loop of editing right now.  Keep thinking of new bits I need to clarify or add in.  And my "definitive" list of edits had another four things added to it after this morning's session.  I. Will. Get. There.  And so will you.

It helps to lie to yourself. Every morning, trick yourself into thinking it'll be finished today. You can do this for at least 5 days in a row! You'll be in a good mood the whole day, and then when you don't finish, you can tell yourself tomorrow's the last day. For reals this time.

This happened with my short fantasy story.  Four chapters...okay eight, tops.  It kept going until it was 23 chapters long.  Lots of fun to write, but they just would not go to the vineyard and end the story.

ETA:  My husband has suggested the nuclear option for several books.  I like the meteor shower!  :cheers

I'm pretty sure I've turned into GRRM. I'm working (more or less) on the Epic SF Novel That Won't End. I have dreams where I'm 90 years old and shuffling off to work on it on the rest home's ancient computer -- probably running DOS -- and getting the pitying looks from the staff. Poor old girl. Quite delusional, you know. Don't get her started about the book, she'll never shut up.
I write various flavors of speculative fiction. This is my main pen name.

Start thinking of your reward.

If you're a meat eater and enjoy bourbon, I recommend the following...

"The first lesson of economics is scarcity: there is never enough of anything to fully satisfy all those who want it. The first lesson of politics is to disregard the first lesson of economics." - Thomas Sowell

"The State is an institution run by gangs of murderers, plunderers and thieves, surrounded by willing executioners, propagandists, sycophants, crooks, liars, clowns, charlatans, dupes and useful idiots -- an institution that dirties and taints everything it touches." - Hans Hoppe

"Virtue is more to be feared than vice, because its excesses are not subject to the regulation of conscience." - Adam Smith

Nothing that requires the labor of others is a basic human right.

I keep a stiff upper lip and shoot from the hip. - AC/DC

:hehe. I haven't finished it yet.  But the nuke option was a consideration just to end it.

If you do the nuke option, I will buy a copy. I'm not a reader of romance, but I'll become a fan if it ends Fallout style.  grint

Bummer.  It has a happy ending.  Or will if I ever finish it.  But does it help if I mention about a dozen people die along the way?

I actually wrote a short story once, in which two people declare their love for each other and kiss, just as the nukes fall.

Would you like to play a game of chess?

It seems like my books never end...but then they do and I go through some weird pseudo-postpartum depression thing about it. Then, I find an excuse to make another story in that same world so I can keep certain characters going.

Totally feel you on this. It's a stupid thing but it really happens.

By the way, I decided to enjoy myself a bit and torture my characters a bit, and the readers, too. This is the only way I'm going to enjoy pushing through. Will someone die? Probably. Most likely, I mean. But the lovers end up together at the end so it's all that matters but things are going to get bad. Mw hahaa. ALMOST FINISHED.
